Lady Gaga is doing the tribute to him at the grammy's, i'm not sure how I feel about that. I think she will do a good job, she is a better singer than she gets credit for. I can't help but think there are more appropriate artists out there, ones that actually worked with him. If they wanted a current artist, why not Arcade Fire or Trent Reznor?

I hope the Brits gather his contemporaries and at least involve Brian Eno, but it will probably be Paloma Faith.”

Gaga to make the tribute? No, thanks, I won't watch it. I wish his friends and artists he collaborated with did it, that would feel right, but well, there is nothing I can do about it.

For the Brits, it would be nice if someone like Mick Jagger or Annie Lennox did the tribute with Tony Visconti or Brian Eno. And yeah, maybe newer artists like St. Vincent or Arcade Fire too. It's not gonna happen though.

I was watching it with someone on what turned out to be the day he died and we were trying to work out what the symbolism was.. because I knew there was one. I wasn't sure if it was a video about the pressures of being a recording artist having to write new material or if he was indicating his retirement. Sadly I was wrong on both.

You should try to watch it at some point when you're able to. He meant it to be watched.

You have to admire the audaciousness of him making that video. In all probability few people working on the video knew what he was really meaning in it. Did any of his friends/family see the finished product prior to his death? What a chilling experience that must've been.!
And how did Bowie feel making it & viewing the finished product? I have allowed myself to watch it although it is tough going you have to admire him for going through with such a direct video. So gutsy.

It's funny how we're told he kept his illness private, yet that album is the most in your face statement :"I'm dying, I'm dying, I'M DYING!" It's possible to do.

One of the chorus's on the album "I'm dying to(o) " a clever wordplay. Hiding in plain sight was the last artistic genius of Bowie, from the Blackstar video (Major Tom appears as a corpse) to the Lazarus video & lyrics, to the album title.
"Mysterious" was how people interpreted it prior to his death-in fact it was his least mysterious album. Bravo.

I read somewhere that he didn't particularly care for Gaga, although he's never, to my knowledge said anything publicly about her.

Gaga I regard as a bargain basement Bowie, she's pretentious without the genius & he "influences" are hardly subtle (the Bowie stripe for example) No wonder she invoked the wrath of Madonna fans.

For me an artist like Janelle Monae reflects the spirit of Bowie better in a original form, she makes interesting music, plays with image & is a genuinely interesting artist.

God knows we won't see many Bowie like ( in artistic terms) music stars again. Desperately sad situation.

I am discovering his later music - have you heard Heathen? It's a wonderful album: not a bad track on it. I'm looking forward to listening to Hours... next.

The compilation album, "Nothing has changed...." (a line from one of his songs on Heathen) is excellent too, starting from his most recent album and tracking back to his earliest. It includes tracks from the unreleased Toys.

Have you listened to Outside yet - that was always one of my favourite albums from him

I've only recently heard Reality and Outside. Reality is the better of the two in my opinion, with Fall Dog Bombs The Moon and She'll Drive The Big Car being previously unheard wonders.

Lady GaGa should be first on the list for the Angie Bowie tribute show.

I'm loving going into Tesco and Sainsburys and seeing all the Bowie albums on the shelves....Ziggy, Aladdin Sane, Low, Heroes, Hunky Dory....Bowie dominating all these modern 'artists' in the charts. Yeah it seems like the 70s were spot on in creating a hero.

So Gaga’s tribute (sponsored by Intel) was last night. I’m not even going to link to it. The Intel promotion alone has me pretty angry. But even if I tried to ignore that.. the performance itself wasn’t great. It felt disjointed and embarrassing for the most part. What were they thinking.. oh I know.. self promotion and commercialisation! YAY! One of the greatest artists of our generations passes away and Intel wants to make some money off the back of it and Gaga wants to be Gaga.

Duncan had this to say: https://twitter.com/manmademoon/stat...37406873743360

They should have just shown the entire 10 minutes of the Blackstar video.

I loved Gaga's performance! I thought she was spot-on and well-suited to the job. Loved that Nile Rodgers was apart of it too.

I said initially that I wasn't sure about Gaga doing it, but I didn't expect to actually hate it, I agree with Duncan. It was like Liza Minnelli crossed with a bad Elvis impersonator, I just.... I don't know, there was no spirit of Bowie in that performance, she sucked the soul out of it with the over top production (I liked the first minute though).

I'm glad a lot of people enjoyed it and got something out of it though, it just wasn't for me. Hopefully the Brits do a better job, but really nothing compares to the real thing so maybe my expectations are too high. I think I would have preferred her to wear a Thin White Duke style suit and just sing a medley of songs, obviously too low key for Gaga. I'm just thankful she left Ashes to Ashes alone, my favourite of his 'hits'.

And Lemmy got Alice Cooper ffs! Would it have killed them to get someone more appropriate for Bowie?

To make things better with the world here is David doing a tribute for John Lennon. Looks like it was only recently upped to youtube and so some may not have seen it before.

This guy does a much better tribute. Not for all maybe, but it's a tad more subtle

BIB1 - totally agree.

BIB2 - don't hold your breath. I'd fully expect an array of X Factor rejects vocally vandalising classic after classic in a medley from hell that will make Gaga look brilliant.

BIB3 - this is obviously challenging, but not beyond the realms of imagination: why not do the unthinkable and ask Kate Bush? Or Iggy Pop? Arcade Fire? Siouxsie Sioux? Janelle Monae? Suede? Sadly, I fear the Brits will be even more dispiriting than the Grammys and miss the whole point of David Bowie, whose creativity and unpredictability made him the legend he is - and also put him at odds with the corporate accountants who control the music industry (and the Brits).

I don't know if this has already been linked to, but this is the best most beautiful tribute to David Bowie I have seen https://m.youtube.com/?#/watch?v=dQPx2UVhTUc
Somehow I think he would have appreciated it much more.
And another beautiful tribute from someone who knew him https://m.youtube.com/?#/watch?v=jogv7tD18gs

I liked the Intel face tracking, nice touch really. But after that, gosh, it went downhill and turned into a disastrous mess so quickly. I didn't like the idea of Gaga doing the tribute from the start, knowing how try hard she can be, but my, with all the Bowies superb classics, I haven't expected it to be this awful. Like a rushed and incredibly cheesy 80's Las Vegas revue. I had to turn the telly off after she started to play on that tacky keyboard thing. I blame Nile too tho.

Nicely summed up. I saw a 15 second clip of the face stuff and it was a tad emotional on first viewing to be fair. But by the time I'd seen the entire clip all the magic had gone for me. And the whole sponsorship thing just completely tarnished it.
