It did hit No 1 on the iTunes download charts.

With his death, I would guess that there will be a big increase in sales.

I think the album was always going to be. The really interesting thing is how he performs on the singles chart.

I reckon he will have a number 1 although would not like to guess which song it will be but would like it to be Space Oddity as that was the first Bowie single I bought way back in 1969 and was probably his first chart entry.

I hope there's a Bowie number one in the singles chart this week. Trouble is picking a song, Space Oddity, Starman, Ashes to Ashes, Ziggy Startduct etc, so many relevant and poignant songs.

Heroes would be a good one, as it shockingly underperformed on first release in 1977.

But there is a single from the new album, Lazarus.

He's a shoo in for #1 album and rightly so. His numbers will be huge, I suspect. I can't see Lazurus being 'the chosen one' for a #1 single, surely it's going to be one of his truly iconic releases like Space Oddity, Heroes etc.

It really deserves to be #1 with or without his death because it's an amazing album. Fingers crossed.

Similar to when MJ died, I think there's too many songs for the public to get behind just one to get the top spot. Although, with streaming these days, I guess that could help.

An artist with a back catalogue of over 40 years dies, and all people are interested in is if his death means that more people will go out and buy his new record to get it to No.1?
Jesus.

It isn't "all they are interested in". What a ridiculous assumption to make.

He'll get the number one album easy, but the number one single will be trickier. One thing's for sure a lot of his singles will be in the chart. Earlier today 97 of his songs were in the iTunes top 1500

David Bowie songs are I know it if I hear it as I was only born in 1985, people putting songs titles in postings has helped me though very sad news.

That's not really the point though, is it? If he was still alive all people would be interested in was whether his record would get to No.1, so it's hardly a crime if people are interested in this happening even more as a mark of respect.

I was thinking Heroes .. deserved to be number one anyway

So strange - pre-ordered this for my other half so he could have it day it came out. Has been waxing lyrical about it all weekend and then this happens.

To make a piece of music like this anyway, add to that he is 69 years young, and add to that he was dying of cancer.

The word legend is bandied around way too much nowadays.

RIP - Planet Earth is Blue.

His last album got to #1 so it was clear this one would too even before news of his death broke. The question is how many of his back catalogue albums will make the top 40 and which singles will chart high. Will there be a social media campaign to get a specific song to number one to knock Bieber off his perch?

It was a certainty for Number 1 anyway - 25k ahead of Elvis apparently, with Adele in third place!

I'm really pleased the album was already a safe chart topper before today's awful news, as it shows people were excited about new material anyway and his inevitable chart victory won't purely be down to his death.

Having posted I then read that was already on the way to being number one anyway .. sales of around 90 thousand plus ..

Sales have apparently soared yesterday and its already cleared 80,000 copies - so should be quite a bit more than that!

From memory I think only Adele and Coldplay managed to clear 100k in a week in all of last year, so it would be very impressive if Bowie manages it.

I seem to remember that people took an instant liking to the lyrics of "Man in the Mirror" and the song went all the way up to number 2 in the UK singles chart; the highest placed of all of Michael Jackson's songs that had re-entered the chart.

Since then though, streaming has become very dominant. I do not think there will be a standout song that will do extremely well in the singles chart. If I have got my figures right; 43 of Bowie's songs have re-entered the single chart and you may very well get a couple of top 20 hits out of that lot. As well as that, nine of his albums have also re-entered the album chart too with "Blackstar" I'm very certain will take the top spot on Friday.

That would be a great achievement for his legacy.

I have just read it is actually 14 albums that have re-entered the album chart.

This could turn out to be one of the best top 40 singles and album charts ever 😊
