Any chance of him beating Adele's sales of 25?

I think at this point she is too far ahead.

Well he's beaten her Vevo record for views of the video so that's still a great achievement.

Seems he had another album planned for release and got as far as writing+demoing 5 songs before the cancer took him away from us:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...onths-20160113

Quote:
“About a week before his death, with Blackstar nearing release, David Bowie called his longtime friend and producer Tony Visconti via FaceTime, and told him he wanted to make one more album. In what turned out to have been the final weeks of his life, Bowie wrote and demo-ed five fresh songs, and was anxious to return to the studio one last time. Bowie had known since November that his cancer was terminal, according to Visconti, but if their final conversation was any indication, he had no idea he had so little time left. "At that late stage, he was planning the follow-up to Blackstar," says Visconti, that album's producer, in an interview conducted Wednesday for a Bowie memorial package in the next issue of Rolling Stone.”

It's a good post-humous gesture, but the album is terrible. Even worse than that Lou Reed/Metallica collaboration. It's gotten great reviews from the hipster press because it's Bowie and because it's "different", which unfortunately does not equal better.

Would have been better to send one of Bowie's good albums to No.1.

As a long time Bowie fan I think the album is great

It great by any reckoning but when you consider it was recorded by a man in his late sixties, at th end of a long career, knowing he was dying of a terminal illness, it is nothing short of phenomenal.

The album isn't terrible at all. Now Never Let Me Down and Earthling were so Bowie has made some terrible albums.

Bowie never stood still and continuing to make challenging records right up until his death rather than just giving the fans what they wanted. You've also got to bear in mind that most media reviews were written before his demise, so why would they give him good reviews just because it was Bowie? They certainly weren't afraid to criticise some of his 1980s output!

If you just want an artist whose new material is little more rewrites of their "good" albums, perhaps you'd be happier with something safe like Oasis or U2?

I only wish that were true of U2.

What?????? It's his best album since Heroes. In my opinion

It is odd though so I can see why many won't like it. He was influenced by Boards Of Canada on this one who are one of my favourite ever groups but again they aren't for everyone. I find it incredible that given everything he produced something as good and deep as this. It get better on every listen to. I can see myself listening to this one for a long, long time

Best thing he's done since Outside imho. Has a similar vibe (in parts), though with a totally different sound, to Scott Walker's collaboration with Sunn0))).

10 albums in the Top 40. Blackstar at number 1, of course.

5 singles in the Top 40, Heroes the highest placed at number 12 (12 places higher than it's original '70s peak).

I prefer it to his last album if i am honest. I think he left this world with a great parting gift.

Singles sales chart he's nos. 7 and 10;
Physical singles he's 2,3,4,5,6,8 & 9;
Vinyl singles he's 1,2,3,4,5,6 & 7.

On the other hand, on singles streams, his highest single is... no. 37! Which just confirms the discussion last week about how streaming has corrupted the charts, especially for singles, and makes them no longer comparable with what went before streaming was included.

Great news about Blackstar though.

I first watched the 10 minute masterpiece Blackstar on YouTube towards the end of last year and thought it was incredible. I watched it again last Monday from a completely different perspective, and when he sings the line "something happened on the day he died" three quarters into the song just hit me so hard.

You have to admire a man, privately battling cancer, at the age of 68 making such phenomenal music and equally outstanding music videos. It's tracks like this - yet alone the rest of the album - that is why his legacy will live on.

The music world will never have another David Bowie - the industry itself will make sure of that (you can decide for yourself if that's a good or bad thing).
