another great set of auditions tonight

so many really good singer/songwriter types who just sing the song without all the over the top vocal gymnastics and hardly any of the mariah carey mini-me's we get here

I liked Harry's comment the other day. He apparently has a reputation for not liking runs - he explained that he was not against them as such but disliked the overuse of them. It's really much more effective if a singer just throws in one or two rather than using them all the time.

Anyone see the Hollywood rounds this week? I thought they showed a good mix of singing and group round drama

Some contestants obviously got more time than others but it was good to see so many different contestants over the two episodes, even though you didn't hear each one for very long.

Thank you for reminding me to watch the recordings I made!

I have to use my TiVo box as my Humax Freesat one, that I normally use, doesn't have 4 Music.

I have seldom enjoyed the group stage. Virtually everything that happens deals with individual singers, but someone can fail at the group stage because they can't get into a suitable group.

I'm not sure if anything was cut. In the us the Wednesday shows have been an hour and the Thursday ones are 2 hours.

LaPorsha Renae is by FAR my favourite this year. Such an amazing voice!

Sonika Vaid and Tristan McIntosh are my other favourites!

Think they have shorter breaks in the USA don't they? Therefore, more material (not affecting the result - as it states at the end in the credits) gets cut to fit around the UK longer ad breaks.

I thought that the USA had much longer breaks. Surely they have considerably more time spent in an hour on adverts than in the UK?

The year that Scotty won it, I watched the final live on a stream from US TV. I remember that the ad breaks were only 1/2 minutes long but they had them more frequently. That's why on the UK version you often see an ad break skipped before hearing the 'Welcome back to American Idol' when we've not gone off for a break!

I can see why people think the whole programme is scripted. certainly when you look at the group scenes - one group loses a member, face being eliminated but then magically find (on camera) a replacement.

I find the whole group thing difficult to watch and still don't understand it, even though Harry attempted to justify it. I'm sure that from time to time perfectly good contestants have been eliminated because they were unlucky in who they formed a group with. I suppose the trick is to not just worry about whether you can get through each previous round but also form alliances with other people so that you can quickly get into a compatible group.

I'm not quite sure how many are left now, but we can perhaps start to identify potential finalists?

Daughter being in a journey in a similar (AI inspired) show, not entirely scripted but production team has fairly good knowledge on final 12 (or 24) after watching / putting together the audition clip.

Wow suniil, your daughter is great! Can't believe she's only 14. Hope she auditions for some more shows when she's older.

Solo round at 'Hollywood week' just starting on 4Music.

ellie4265: Thank you.

mimik1uk, you may have seen Tristan before but she changed her styling totally. She is good, but not sure whether her voice has tonal quality of some other girls. But she is definitely something (that earmarked by producers) and a great story.

Luckily I have a TIVO, which allowed me to set up a series link from 1 February (no idea why the January shows had to be set manually).

talent in the last 24 is incredible , cant wait to see the lives

cant remember her name but think the blonde girl that was eliminated just before the last 24 last year is a potential winner, the guy mackenzie who did an original song in hollywood week fits the profile that traditionally does well on AI tho

I seemed to have missed the Showcase episode when the top 50 performed in front of an audience . I did catch what looked to be the next episode when the top 24 were chosen and saw bits of the Showcase episode performances . Was the full episode shown and if so is it being repeated ?

dont think they show the showcase in full , just the highlights to support the selection of the top 24

There's a lot of really good singers in the top 24 this year. Will be interesting to watch as the live shows begin as I always feel there's a dip in quality of performances the first few live show weeks.

I'm looking forward to seeing past idols back for duets, I do wonder if the popularity of the past contestants will impact on voting.

Trent and Tristan have probably been my favourites so far. Although Mackenzie came out of nowhere for me in the last rounds of Hollywood week.
