I still use an older 9200T in the bedroom, and want to upgrade the original 160GB to a new Seagate 500GB and copy the contents of the 160GB over to the newer 500GB, and been told i need to take out the old 160GB drive and install the new 500GB and format that drive in the 9200 then connect both drives to the PC and copy 160GB drive over to the 500GB drive using HumaxRW, however i have been unable to find any info on how to do this one the web anywhere, can anyone point me in the direct of a tutorial online somewhere please?

When you format the 500GB drive in the Humax I would also make a short test recording so that there is something for a list command to show,

Assuming you are running Windows vista or later then you need to open a command prompt with administrative privileges (Start>All Programs>Accessories .and then instead of left clicking on Command Prompt right click and select "Run as Administrator"). then you need to check that the Humax drives are detected. CD to the location where you have uncompressed humaxrw.exe and type

humaxrw 1: -l (Lower case l)

If that lists one of the drives then note whether it is 160GB or 500GB. If it doesn't increment 1: trying 2:, 3: etc until you have detected both drives.

Assuming the 160GB drive is 1: and the 500GB drive 2: then type

humaxrw -g * 1: 2:

which should do the copy (it will take a fair bit of time). Put the 500GB drive back in Humax and cross fingers.

OK many thanks for this Martin, i run win 7 and happy working with command lines etc, i do have alot (9) of hard drives but can take that down to 1 or 2 without too much hassle, thanks for the tips on making a couple of test recordings, I'll post back later just to let you know how i got on.

Well i thought i had all the hardware i needed but it seems i'm missing some suff, which is a real pain in the backside as i wanted it done today, I can rig the 500GB seagate up no problems but i'm having issues with the 160GB EIDE drive, i have a way of connecting it but only via USb and windows won't see it, well should i say humaxrw wont see it, so i have to find someway of connecting it via SATA ports, so it's of to ebay to see what they can offer

I was trying to connect via USB3 so thought i'd go USB2 route and just get the following

Have you tried changing the jumper (on the dive) that sets the drive as Master, Slave or Cable select? Maybe the USB adapter is expecting a different setting to the Humax.

I had forgotton about the jumpers, but it made no difference, i used jumper on every option and even no pins and get same either "Unknown Partition Table" or "Partition Table: Permission denied", 100% fired up as admin, done a bit of googleing using "humaxrw Partition Table: Permission denied" got a few hits but nothing helped me.

Can I just confirm; you need both to be an administrator and to have started the command prompt for humaxrw with administrative priveleges?

Only other thing that occurs to me is that if you are using a USB to IDE adapter it is possible with some of them to insert it into the drive with the pins off by one which obviously won't work. Also with my adapter I need to have the drive powered up and running before plugging in the USB connector.

Yea logged in as admin and right clicked command prompt and ran as admin.


I'm just wondering if my USB to IDE adapter is just cheapo rubbish, well i paid the extar tenner to get it here on Sat so we will see what gives then, but what puzzles me is it's saying "Permission denied" don't get that one, oh well lets hope tis item works for me otherwiese i'l have to think again.

Cor does this never end, well got the needed part and saw nothing first few times and had to adjust jumper to master setting on IDE drive now windows sees it HOWEVER it's now saying "FAT: invalid argument" done some googling and have 12 answers to look at so will go over that

I did read Martin in an old reply that XP would make it easier to fix, I have no issues taking an image of my win 7 machine wiping it all and putting XP back on if it would help for this issue, but after looking at all the posts on this it seems i may be stuffed unless i use the recover code but unsure if i should do that, your thoughts please..
