That chicken comment from John was VERY SUSPICIOUS.

No, I can just see through snide little remarks like the one John made. You all can preach about how innocent it was but I don't buy it.

I don't think it was racist. I'm pretty sure they were having chicken for dinner. I don't like John though. He's far too full of himself

Is it like when Clarkson saw a 'slope' on a bridge, but most of us were unaware it was a negative name for Asians? Seems lots of folk have not heard of the connection with blacks and chicken.

The more I see that comment the more suspect it seems. I'm pretty sure Chicken isn't the only thing she eats but you know "all people of a certain ethnicity only eat chicken".”

I heard him say it but it didn't register with me at the time ..I can see how that could be misconstrued.

I didn't know that. I'm partial to chicken myself, and i'm not a black person.

I had no idea "chicken" was code for "black".

They'd all been moaning about her being lazy and selfish and that's how I took the comment at the time, and that's how I still take it.

Well I'm certainly not 'playing ignorant' but I've never hear that before. I honestly thought he meant she only shows her face when she wants food.

I am not a fan of John, but I didn't take it as "chicken" being code for "black" either. I took it as it was meant - she is lazy and likes chicken!

I suspect that it is much better known insult in the US. I had never heard of it and had to look it up. Now that I have I can understand why it could be perceived as a racist comment. I pride myself in being knowledgeable in what constitutes racism but that one had totally passed me by. I don't consider myself as ignorant either.

I didn't either I had to google it. It's not code for black it's seen as racial stereotyping.

You mean it really is a racist insult in the States? Do you have a link?

I just Googled 'plate of chicken' and got ... well.. recipes and pictures of plates of chicken.

Thanks for the clarification, Teddy. I wasn't playing ignorant, I am ignorant!

Quote:
“There's a reason why the fast food franchise "Kentucky Fried Chicken" changed its name to "KFC". And it wasn't just because some people consider fried foods to be unhealthy. Southern living not only evokes negative memories of slavery. It also carries negative connotations of what some Americans call "rednecks" and "hillbillies".

Here's an American history 101 explanation from a political blog post about the problem with Sergio Garcia's comment:
"Just why is the fried chicken stereotype racist? There are a number of reasons, some of them old and some of them current. Fried chicken was a dish commonly made by slaves, and it persisted among free blacks who were, at the time, too poor to afford more expensive meats. During prolonged American apartheid, fried chicken played well in black communities, as it was easy to make and even easier to refrigerate. Black people then had to worry about those things, as a meal at most restaurants was outside their reach”

Silly. You need to put on your Racism Alert hat and google again.

In this instance, the only way this could possibly be construed as racist is if they were preparing anything other than chicken for dinner. 'Plate of chicken' while beef was roasting, fair enough, a suspect dig. 'Plate of chicken' while chicken was being prepared for, well, a plate of chicken, no.

This is the row I referred to earlier between Garcia and Woods.

I don't think it was a racist comment in this case.

Think it's fried chicken that's the problem .

Whilst I'm aware of the racist stereotype that African Americans only eat / love fried chicken when I heard John say what he did it never occurred to me that he meant it that way. He had already been going on about Tiff being lazy and only turning up for food and I assumed chicken was actually on the menu.

I am though a bit unhappy about them labelling Tiffany lazy all the time. Do all the other HMs assist or is it just some that do most of the work? I assume the latter. Though I'm not suggesting racism Tiff does seem bottom of the the pecking order for some reason and I don't like it.

Interesting. I was always led to understand that before ww2 chicken was a rich man's meat. I understood it used to be very expensive and only really on the tables of the gentry etc until post war industrialisation and the development of better chicken sexing techniques came about.

Roast chicken? Grilled chicken? Chicken Kiev or Fried chicken?

They were eating chicken - he was describing her dinner - it could have just as easily been a bowl of soup.

It's like if Tiff was an Asian lady and he said "she just wants a bowl of curry" Chicken is very popular with Black people.

I haven't lived have I?

But I am getting the hang of it now i think. I just read a post in which one poster offered another a rich tea biscuit for dunking. I immediately realised they were being racist. because everyone knows only the British dunk rich tea biscuits.
