That chicken comment from John was VERY SUSPICIOUS.

You have got to be joking, how absurd! People are reading waaaaay too much into offhand comments. I don't like John, but in no way was that a slight. Come on, people. Get a grip.

BB should sort this issue out immediately by posting the Housemates menu on their website immediately. ”

Clearly it needs to be looked at. Fancy making Nancy eat pizza - can one get a more stereotypical message. They could have gone for a Chinese or an Indian takeaway but no they choose pizza.

And complaining to Ofcom it seems. Where would they be without BB.

Don't like him either and would love to say "what a lot of nonsense" but in fact, I find it quite serious and dangerous that people come up with such hateful complaints.

Thank you for that, but I can't go and get some sleep as constant vigilance is necessary to ensure no other food related slurs on TV contaminate the minds of the young and the simple

So I've had a little think about this thread since I posted my amazement at it.

And I've revised my opinion on it a little. I do believe it is correct to raise issues of racism even if it appears absolutely non racist initially. It is possible that racist comments occur even though most are completely oblivious to it. So it's fair and right to ask whether the comment was racist.

However, I would like to establish if it was chicken they were eating or not? Has this been confirmed yay or nay?

My initial response was of 'you can't be serious' about this thread. But then those affected by racism know more about the subtleties of it than others...

Considering everything going on in the world the fact that the League of Social Justice Warriors has nothing better to do than waste both their time, and everyone else's, on trivia like an innocent offhand comment speaks volumes.

It's an American thing. Doesn't really translate to the UK.

Well if it wasn't a racial slur this time yesterday it is now. Yesterday I googled 'plate of chicken - racial slur". I got recipies and pictures of chicken dinners.

I just did it again today, same search term and I got a page of complaints, news stories and of course our dear old DS. All references to plate of chicken as a racial insult.

Nice work folks our contribution to race relations seems to be having introduced a new insult to the already too long a list. Ooooops.

I don't see that he was being racist, did they not have chicken for dinner?

Ofcom seems a bit too far.

It was about as racist as Gordon Ramseys comment was homophobic in Hells Kitchen when someone asked Gordon where something was and he pointed across the kitchen and said it's over there next to the mincer, which Brian Dowling just happened to be standing in front of.

Get a grip people, Brian WAS standing next to the mincer and in this instance the HM's WERE having chicken. As I said elsewhere, it was lucky they weren't having rice and peas with their chicken or John wouldn't have had a leg to stand on. Doh!

Like your post Jules. My amazement has been reserved solely for what appears to be the majority on here who are determined to belittle and quell any discussion about the possibility of racist connotations here. I've said before and I will say again it is actually possible to talk about the racist slur element and still acknowledge that it's likely John didn't mean it that way. It seems people would rather laugh at the very existence of there being a racist slur regarding eating (fried) chicken.

I must say I do agree though that it would be interesting to know if chicken was on the menu. It's almost like the more people berate the idea of a racist connotation it makes me wonder if there is.

Yes. I think the notion that the comment could have been racist made me laugh. It seemed absurd. But perhaps I was a little too quick to dismiss it. It is possible that in not being racist that sometimes racism gets missed when you either don't 'think that way' or are not exposed to racism. So in this situation, as ludicrous as it seems - I understand the discussion is being had in the sense it is right to question whether it was.
