I enjoyed it but it wasn't amazing. I blame Cadiva for setting me up to expect some huge cliffhanger.
Just kidding, Cadiva XXX I thought it was pretty good but I'm disappointed that we won't see any more training sessions with Hodge... I guess that was one of the reasons why it didn't impress me as much. I do think the acting has got much better. I suspect that as a book reader it was a bigger deal for me seeing it on screen because I loved the finale. Just enough of a cliffhanger to make you want it to carry on so you find out more. I'm also glad that they're pulling in stories from the first three books in the series rather than doing it book by book because it means the pacing has been so much better. Quote:
It was a good episode. It ended on a cliff-hanger but not of the really painful kind, more in a 'what's going to happen next' way.
I was pleased that Alec remained focussed and wasn't drawn into Camille's games. He trusts Magnus. I don't think they are having doubts about how they feel. They are simply considering the implications of their being together, in particular Alec because it's new to him of course. The immortal-mortal issue is something that will need to be thought through for a long-term relationship, something that I imagine most of us here have never needed to worry about. Finally though we got scary Valentine as well as charismatic and compelling Valentine. They're really going to have to work more with him in Season Two though to make it clear just how dangerous he is. I was really pleased to see they did keep his ship full of dodgy created Shadowhunters from the books though. Looking forward to giving the show another rewatch now all 13 episodes are out. Its improved immeasurably since the first few episodes. |

Hey I never said big cliffhanger just that I suspected what they were going to do with Jace!

I was only joking
![]() I was still a bit meh about it, mainly because I've realised I haven't warmed to the guy playing Jace and don't really care. Was more gutted about Hodge ![]() I'm teasing ya ![]() I think Dom's improved as the season's gone on but they've not really given his character the same kind of journey development that they have to Alec. Obviously in the first couple of books all the focus is on Clary and so everything is done from her perspective so because she's falling for Jace, you get more of a sense of their relationship and character progression so when he goes off with Valentine after the "Luke I am your father" big reveal, it has more impact. Mind you, it also happens much later so there's an awful lot of extraneous crap that the TV show has thankfully cut out and reduced down. The pacing in the first three books is shockingly bad. Malec for example, in the books you don't get any resolution between them until Book Three and then you find out it's all been happening "off page" which really pissed me off. Most of Malec actually takes place in books she's written outside the main six Mortal Instruments ones! Hodge in the books is also vastly different, he's an old man, scholarly and a bit frail so I think they made a good choice in switching him to be the weapons master and making him younger so he was more of a friend than a teacher figure. Made the betrayal even harsher. I think the finale worked well for what it needed to do, which was set up a few storylines to take into Season Two. They need to flesh out things a bit more going forward but I think it has the potential to run for a good few years fingers crossed. But I do agree it wasn't particularly flashy or an epic resolvement of what'd been going on before hand. Jocelyn's waking up for example was a bit of a - oh that's that then - but I guess they couldn't fit everything into a 45 min episode! |

Personally, Valentine was completely wasted. They could have used him very sparingly but they kinda threw him out there without really giving him any oomph. Mistake as I honestly don't care at all about him and find him really rather rubbish as the big bad... Still, roll on season 2. We've been spoiled this January with awesome shows. It's really been a rather fantastic start to the year. |

This I completely agree with. They could have cut out an earlier episode and had time to do this in episode 11 or 12 (hmm, maybe not 12 - LOL) and then they could have had Valentine for episode 13.

It's really been a rather fantastic start to the year. The only time I felt they got this right was when Hodge realised just how badly he'd been duped into handing over the Mortal Cup. Then you got a glimpse of the power of Valentine. Still, overall I think it worked well as a finale, they closed up a few storylines, they opened up where they're going next with Season Two and they had some great set pieces. |

Also nice interview with Michael Reisz, who wrote the Malec episode about why it was important they got Alec's coming out right and why they deviated from the book story.

Hey guys, signed up today and I've already watched episode 1!
My thoughts - Plenty to get my attention and enough unanswered questions to bring me back for the next ep. Getting a bigger budget but less original Buffy vibe from it. Love the effect when the demons are stabbed. Bit cliched to delay the talk until it's too late. Not sure I like being called mundane! Think I prefer muggle ![]() Hate not knowing who to trust (esp. Luke), but thought it was great when the shadowhunters came and saved the day, they'd built up some pretty convincing despair before that. Sorry if this is off topic for this thread, but I think that horse has already bolted

I do really enjoy the play off between the various factions. To be honest, not sure anyone can really trust any of them; they've all got agendas coming out of their runes ![]() Glad you enjoyed it. If you liked episode 1 - you're going to love the rest of the season

Yay Lowri! A re-watch is now definitely in order. Glad to read you can see the potential in this show, it just gets better and better
![]() I think for many it's hard to look past how incredibly derivative it is, and there are a few niggles with the acting, but generally it's really a strong opening |

Episode 2 - Not as enjoyable as the first episode, perhaps I've now seen too many superpowered rebel fighter shows/films, but it seemed a little slow. I did really like the Dot storyline (hope she made it, doubt she did) and the reveal of Clary's father. Not keen on whiny Simon so the kidnapping didn't really pack much of a punch! Forgot to say before, but I think the swords are really cool, hope we get to see more stuff like that.
Now onto Daredevil episode 1
