Well at the start I felt there was a lot of exposition and scene setting that felt a bit clunky plus the flash-backs didn't work so well, I'm thinking of the lengthy ones in that particular episode.

Once all that was over and done with and they could start getting on with the story, it improved though I was entertained right from the beginning anyway.

I am not a fan of flash-backs in shows so I agree with you.

I wasn't a fan of the later ones, either. I'd rather you show how horrible someone is rather than seeing their history (hated Lost for that).

But it's all so light and fluffy. I do wish it had gone into more depth, but hey - 20 episodes next season, lots of chances for them to go into a lot more detail.

It does get a lot better, but it's absolutely not a show of substance; it's popcorn TV with lots of pretty people.

Lots and lots and lots of pretty people.

Only read if you've watched all episodes! I mean it!

Oh, and 11 pages. GO US!

See I know where you're coming from here and I mostly agree with you, it's not substantive in terms of the depth of its storytelling in the main but I think where it does have substance is in the storytelling of Malec.
I think seeing that relationship develop and be explored on screen has been something which can give hope, as daft as that sounds, to young teens who might be going through having similar feelings.

Yes it's light and fluffy in the main, yes the cast are all beautiful, but at the heart of Malec is a young man's journey (baring in mind they're younger in the books, Alec is 18 from memory and Magnus appears to be around his early 20s) from fear and tradition and rigidity and rules and restrictions through to finally saying screw this.

Okay it also happens over a lot longer period in the books and most of it happens outside of the main Mortal Instruments series in Magnus' books, but I think for a teen audience it's a really important message to see.

Oops sorry, got a bit carried away with the proselytising there

I would still have liked more depth there. I know it's only 13 episodes and it's all dumbed-down for the current generation where everything has to be fast-paced, but, for me, I'd have liked a few more episodes for it to develop.

Mind you, it's not like they're married. Loads more to come in S2 - wheeeee

Hmm, wasn't over impressed with episode 3 either, too predictable. I think it was a prime example of "popcorn tv" as you put it Karis, you couldn't leave a guy and girl together for more than 2 seconds without the sexual tension going off the scale! Underneath the teenage angst the rescue of Simon was ok, some pretty shoddy archery but as a (terrible) archer myself, that's always interesting to watch.
Sadly, there wasn't enough plot to stop me wandering off onto the internet , best bit I remember is the hint at the end that Simon might be a vampire. I hope he is, he gets on my nerves and he'd be much more interesting, it would also explain why they let him go. Don't know how he'd have survived the sunlight though.
Not giving up yet, I'm trusting it to pick up once all the exposition and teenage tantrums are done with! Doesn't help that I'm pairing it with Daredevil which is original in every way Shadowhunters isn't!

To be honest, if they hadn't been so pretty (did I mention that?) I wouldn't have stuck with it. There's just nothing of substance with the show and I had to seriously turn my brain off when the vampires turned up (and then the werewolves).

But I did really enjoy it and I enjoyed a few elements greatly. Some of the original stuff (to come) is pretty cool, but seeing the show through your "eyes" makes me realise just how horrifically and, let's face it, shamefully derivative it is.

But did I mention how pretty they all were.

It was like that with s1 of Teen Wolf. That was genuinely a great show, but the past few years it's majorly lost its way in trying to be something it's not.

I just cannot get into Daredevil. I might try again to watch Episode 2. Loved JJ but Daredevil. Struggling.

Sadly, imo none of them are pretty enough to carry the show! Perhaps they'd be prettier if they stopped frowning?
Looking forward to werewolves; with the exception of Buffy, I've never really enjoyed vampire stories.
Probably won't be an update tomorrow, I've got plans to go out with people in real life My free Netflix month is really bad timing to finally get a social life

Tbf, I've only watched a couple of episodes of DD but I really like it so far, and I'd rather see Charlie Cox than the Shadowhunter guys, but then I think I've got a thing about dark haired men with a sense of humour (evidenced by my love of Merlin, DW, Lucifer etc)

Simon if he gets better glasses, Hodge is really not my cup of tea, although you have reminded me of that scene when he's being tortured by his tattoo, I thought he did well in that scene.

I'll join you in line for Captain America though

Ooh Matt Daddario totally does it for me, I'd watch him doing nothing Stick with it Lowri because from Episode 6/7 it all of a sudden really finds its feet and begins to become a much better story telling led show.

I'd watch Magnus doing emoting all day long.

Episode 6: Magnus goes to Tesco...

Yeah true, I love Harry as well and him and Matt together are mesmerising to watch.

Although atm I've totally got a new crush anyways who is taking up all my spare time so I've not found any new Malec stuff to watch of late.

Well, I say new, it's not new, I've been aware of him for a while as he was in the original Spring Awakening on Broadway, but I came across this clip from Private Romeo and was entranced and decided to go find out more and ended up buying the film.
And, as a PS, his co-star Seth Numrich is also to die for.

Then I found out he could sing and I was gone

Then he did this video which just made me fall in love with him utterly.

So now I have all his digital recordings and I've just gone and bought the CD versions on import from the US because I need to have physical copies. Yes I know, I have a crush!

All that aside though, he's a truly nice guy and we've Tweet-exchanged a few times and I reviewed his latest album on my blog which he was so sweet about.

And, back to the thread subject! I'm really looking forward to seeing where they go with Season Two. Obviously finding out the truth about Jace, finding him and Valentine and getting him back is going to be the driving narrative I'd suspect.

I know Check out his latest album Uncontrolled, I reviewed it and it's beyond stunning. I've not stopped playing it since it came out.

My absolute favourite is What You Stole, which I linked to up above but you can find the whole album concert release here.

Hey this one's tame compared to the old Merlin threads

I see where you're coming from
He's utterly gorgeous, and gay, because all the best ones are. He is also a really sweet guy though too.

Too true! It's amazing they weren't shut down by the mods, half naked pictures of knights doesn't qualify as on topic!

Never mind all the weird things Smint used to find, those Plushies anyone?!

So funny how all the nice girls say that :P
Cos it's true! He just does something to me.

Although I'm not sure I qualify as a "nice" girl, got a lot more adjectives and describing nouns chucked at me over the years than that one

Finally watched the next ep, not sure a whole lot happened, but the show feels like it's finally finding its feet now that it's finished the world building. Love that Simon is becoming a vampire, makes him much more interesting!
Alec was a numpty though, is hiding the truth about his sexuality (which was already out there anyway) really worth getting eaten by a demon for?

A bit of a delay watching this one because I had to finish Daredevil s1, OMG that show is good! I just love the character of Matt, and it's very interesting to watch a blind character on tv, there should be more imo. When done in good taste, it gives lots of opportunities for both serious thought-provoking scenes and humour. Definitely give it another go Karis, it's darker than SH or Lucifer but not in a depressing way. The cinematography is excellent as well.
Watching JJ next because I don't want DD to be over It's cured my Lucifer withdrawals though
