Wasn't being rude. But it's clear from your endless responses that you reeaaaaaaaly want to disagree with me. And I was hardly vague: in fact I was extremely specific in my comments.
But I get it. The world gets it. You disagree. Really. I get it. That's fine. And the world is all better again. LOL - this post is a magic plaster that separates all disagreements on whether Shadowhunters is moving too quickly or not. PS. It is :P |

If only the writers had cared as much about the scripts as you two.

Alec was outed in ep 1 iirc
The show has still to confirm it on screen one way or the other. The clues are there but it hasn't been stated outright. |

No we don't know, there have been hints and anyone who is a book reader knows the truth but the show had, up until this last episode, been laying supposition and suspicion rather than outright confirming it.

Malec is a huge, huge fan loved pairing in the books so I can see how someone who doesn't read the books could be confused over how everyone knows Alec is gay already. The show need to be careful with how they handle that pair because if they annoy the Malec fans they could easily lose a lot of their viewers.

I was so confused... thinking: is it a demon? There was no Malec in any of the episodes... But as I previously said: only in the last episode were there any hints that Alec was gay. I mean, even then it's not super clear... I watched it again the other night and it's obviously coming, but for me - who knew nothing about the show / books - it was a bit of a mystery

The phone call. So cute!
It's all giving me warm feelings. Although Clary is the stupidest beotch in the history of heroes. I thought as an episode it was probably the best one yet. The pacing was much improved, not rushing through a million things at once but allowing the narrative to unfold. The phone call was, as you say, totally cute and I really hope we do actually get Malec on the show properly even though they're aiming it at a teen audience, I don't want a sanitised romance between those two. I am hopeful that the second to last episode of the season is titled Malec ![]() Like how they're slowing adding in the changes to Simon's character, his increased strength and agility is being shown without it being made obvious that something's going on. Love the dynamic with him and Izzy, they have good chemistry. I liked that we got to see Luke back and we got a glimpse into the werewolf world that they've only skirted around before now. The CGI was quite good, I liked that these werewolves were raggedy and a bit unkempt. It's always great when you see something from the books visualised on screen and I think they got the box just right with the little hints of what was inside it which weren't totally clear but for book readers was a nice little Easter Egg of what we expect is coming down the line. Alec at the moment is the character who has the most potential for development in a multitude of different directions whereas Clary is being given a fairly one dimensional "emotional idiot who does things without thinking because she must find her mother" narrative, Jace has got the "blinded by possible love/lust/fascination with Clary to the extent he's forgetting most of what's gone on before him with the Lightwood's" narrative and Izzy's got the "sexy chick who can kick ass but has no depth as yet" narrative. Although we did see the hurt behind her mother's treatment of her so hopefully we'll get more of the vulnerability she hides. Their mother brought an interesting new dynamic to the Lightwood mix and her treatment of both Alec and Izzy over the way she behaved with Jace was well done without beating people over the head with it. It will be interesting to see if they bring more about the Clave and Idris in now. Also liked the subtle humour, the spat between Alec and Clary outside the art school was well played with enough emotion to see how serious the conversation was but then finished off with Alec's little "no you" rejoinder. I think the the dynamic between Clary and Alec is starting to work much better, far more than the simple "he doesn't like you because Jace does like you" we had in the first few episodes. |

Re the spoiler, all I will say is that what's happened to Simon on the TV show so far is a fair bit different to what happens in the book.
The question is how much will I ruin the show for myself? |

I watched the first two episodes on Netflix last night. Thought they were pretty good! I didn't mind the movie, but I like the cast on the series a lot more than the movie cast. Especially Isabelle, Alec and Jace.

I actually like Dom Sherwood's Jace but I think Jamie Campbell-Bower's movie performance was slightly better (at the moment anyway). Where I think they've failed so far is with Valentine. Jonathan Rhys-Meyer had the charming madness which, for me, characterises Valentine. He was able to manipulate people because of his personality whereas the TV show version just comes across as a bit of a second rate Russian mob boss! Also not sure yet about Luke. I like Isiaah's portrayal on the show but Luke's supposed to be a fairly timid book store owner which makes it such a huge surprise when you find out just who/what he is. In the show, having Luke be a cop and already be in that protective role meant it wasn't such a big reveal. |

I wish they had scrapped Valentine altogether. But maybe he'll come into his own. Maybe! |

I think so far, Valentine is a huge waste of time. He comes across as some weird almost pantomime - by the numbers - villain. Hardly someone to be terrified of (or some great architect of evil). I find Magnus has the potential to be much more fearsome.
I wish they had scrapped Valentine altogether. But maybe he'll come into his own. Maybe! The power of Valentine was always his powers of persuasion, of being able to manipulate people into doing his bidding because of his charisma and his charm, not because he's threatening people with a knife! |

I think that Magnus is probably the character I think is best portrayed in the show. Harry Shum Jr is doing a pretty incredible job with the character. Episode 4 was my favourite so far. I love his interactions with Alec.
Isabelle is also very well casted. I think the actress is doing a great job with her.

It was an episode where we had to have a lot of exposition so doing it via the medium of a flashback worked okay I think apart from the people they picked for the younger Valentine and Jocelyn didn't look anything like their older versions! Luke wasn't quite as bad, I could see him developing into Isaiah, especially after becoming a werewolf. As I'm a book reader I obviously know all the back story but I think they explained it quite well for none readers and I liked how they showed Clary discovering her ability to place things in "other dimensions" - in her case into a drawing - and the flashback to the brownie. The other thing I think they're doing well is Simon's journey. Something is clearly going on with him but they're revealing it in little pieces and it's working well I think. And, speaking of Simon, the testosterone posturing between him and Jace was amusing as well as Jace's shock when he pulled a knife on him. I did like that they appeared to show Jace actually trying to reach out to Simon, which he misinterpreted as wanting him to pay up over the bet. But, for me, this episode wins all ends up purely on the Malec stuff, I could watch those two's interaction for the full 40 minutes

![]() ![]() Another great episode. Simon and Jace's scenes were funny to watch, but I do feel a bit sorry for Simon. I do like the direction they're taking his character with the whole vampires thing, though. Isabelle stepping up and deciding that she'll be more like her mother was sad to see. I like her energetic and feisty personality, so I hope that Alec and the others can talk her out of it. I want to see her and Simon's storyline cross more, as I think there's something there for each of them. She seems worried everytime something happens to him at least.

No one can deny there's plenty going.
I've been looking at IMDB and Shannara has a ridiculous 8.0 on there while Shadowhunters has a dismal 6. Not sure how one show is rated so much more highly than the other when they're basically as vapid as each other. |

![]() I guess it depends on whether they get the second season. This one's all finished shooting now so who knows which bits of the many books they've picked up to use as they're already pulling from outside City of Bones. Quote:

Shadowhunters isn't really playing up the "sexyness" of its cast and it has been a much slower burn with its story so I can see why Shannara receives a higher rating on IMDB. It's not really a bastion of accuracy like it once was. |

I bet it's cos its in the Twilight category - and thus total crap in most viewer's eyes. I do think the cast of Shadowhunters is way WAY sexier than that of Shannara. I mean every scene is brimming with totty. ![]() MMM totty! |
