Replacement for Samsung S4 mini
I am looking and it needs to be available (sim free) now.
There is no S6 mini, the shatterproof Motorola doesn't seem to be available. So now I am looking elsewhere. Physical dimensions should be similar to the S4 mini (125x61x9). I want lots of app storage space and a decent rear camera. A good chance to have or upgrade to Marshmallow would be nice. Suggestions? The Sony Xperia Z5 compact looks very good but should the mere 2GB memory be a concern? (up just 0.5GB on the S4 mini). TIA GetFrodo |

The Xperia has a micro SD card slot, so expandable to 200GB.

The trouble with the S4 is that there is plenty of spare memory on the external memory, but the internal memory is full and the major culprits do not support being offloaded to external. Has this improved with Lollipop/Marshmallow? The Z5 has 32GB vs 8 for the S4 mini which hopefully should go a long way in eliminating this problem.
And what is Sony's track record on releasing OS updates? And is 2GB ram fit-for-purpose these days? Thanks |

If I were to replace my S4 Mini today, and wanted to replace it with something similar size but better, I'd probably choose the Sony Z5 Compact or Z3 Compact (the only real advantage the Z5 Compact has over the Z3 Compact is larger internal storage, but has the downside of higher weight as well as higher cost).
If limited internal storage space (and the desire to update to a more recent Android version) is a major factor behind wanting to upgrade from an S4 Mini, rooting it could tackle both of those issues to varying extents. It's far too involved to go into here, but my S4 Mini is running Lollipop 5.1.1, and has more apps installed than would fit on a phone with 16GB of internal storage, let alone the 8GB the S4 Mini actually has, and is absolutely rock solid. I'd still replace it with a Z3 Compact though, for the longer battery life and better camera mainly. |
