I slightly worry that this is a sign of the BBC wanting to escalate his visibility with a view to an increased role in Strictly, either as a judge or presenter, but I think he would be awful at either.”

Well. He's failed as a presenter once. With the BBC you have to think of their mind-set. "Ratings first, quality a distant second."

Perhaps they're going to try again with him on the back of the success of Strictly. But as it didn't work first time round, why they'd bother to try again.....

Suspect it was because he got to the Finals - and in previous years he got all sorts of non-dancing celebrities further than you'd expect - so somebody out there likes him and voted.

BBC thinks - ah, the public likes this bloke, we'll let him do the Friday One Show guest interviewer spot.

Same as Anita, she's done well in Strictly so the public like her, so she stood in for Alex Jones for a couple of days - though Anita is good and experienced too so will probably get more work still.

Anita Rani has been a regular member of The One Show team for some years and be used to stand in for Alex on many occasions. They seem to prefer to bring in an outsider to cover for Matt Baker on Fridays. I suppose it gives the BBC a chance to try someone out on a live programme and so show up those who cannot do live TV like du Beke.

I find Anton embarrsing quite honestly. The BBC seem to be under this illusion that he's popular and people want to see him for some reason. And while we're on the subject, why haven't people questioned his close friendship with Len, which is obvioulsy a big conflict of interests? Kevin got so much shit on here when someone (falsely) claimed he was Len's godson, but Anton spends Christmas with Len and was the only pro invited to his wedding. But that's alright then.”

BIB: He IS popular, outside the bubble of DS. Most Strictly-watchers I know out in the real world like Anton. About three-quarters of the 'circle' of people I sometimes watch with were delighted he got to a final at last and voted for him in said final. Plus he has "recognisability". Ask a casual viewer about Strictly and it won't be very long before Anton's name crops up.

That's not to say I think he is a good presenter, but I understand why the BBC are behind him. It's also possible this is his attempt at building a second media career prior to announcing his retirement from the show later in the year...

I agree, Anton is extremely popular, so I can understand why any broadcaster worth their salt would try and harness that. However, he simply isn't a good presenter. As I've said before, I don't mean that as a personal slight, not everyone is good at everything. Being a good presenter is a lot harder than it looks. I wonder whether doing the sort of 'history of dance' shows that Len's been doing might suit him better?

of course Anton is popular he has a big fanbase on SCD of people who vote to save him no matter who he has as his celebrity. I'm one of them and will continue to be next series if he's back. I see no reason why not. I think if Anton or Brendan were ever going it would have happened by now and they wouldn't have taken part in all 13 series if they weren't popular they wouldn't keep getting asked back from one series to the next
