Panasonic TV - Amp setup help re. digital ouput to phono

Hello,

So i bought the Panasonic cx700, which has an optical digital output. My amp has only a phono, aux output. Is there some kind of a converter I can get?

Yes. It's called an Optical to Analogue converter. Prices range from under £10 to £40+. You'll find them easily on Amazon and Ebay. Make sure you get a power supply either included or as an accessory, so when pricing up do bear this in mind. All you'll need then is an optical lead and a pair of phono cables.

Thanks Chris! Was getting slightly worried there. Would this work?

Yes. That'll do.

Just a couple of observations...

(1) It takes power from a USB socket. Make sure there's one free on your TV

(2) It comes with a 1.5m optical cable but I bet the USB power lead is shorter. Depending on the location of the Hi-Fi amp you may end up with the converter tucked behind the TV along with the digital and USB power leads, then have some longer phono cables to the stereo system. That's okay, just make sure you buy some shielded cables. A firm called Kenable (ebay link) are okay for budget leads such as this.

(3) If there are any options about the type of audio output from the TV's optical socket then avoid picking Dolby Digital. You want a basic digital stereo signal (A.K.A. LPCM). The little converter box will be happy with that whereas it won't know what to do with Dolby Digital.
