Why? The majority of shops up here are all open. I think England needs to realise shopping is a lot different to what it used to be. They still seem to be stuck in the middle ages with their refusal to open Sundays, let alone Boxing day.

*tuts* It's not as if they're being press ganged into working. They all need to man up if you ask me & stop whinging!
Some people would be grateful for the opportunity to have a sodding job!

Not everyone celebrates Christmas and some folks are glad of the extra money to be earned. Also if you are entirely alone at Christmas, having a day off isn't always the best thing to be honest!!

Christmas is bigger in England than in Scotland. Why on earth would anyone need to shop on Boxing Day? Would you go out shopping on New Year's Day?

Exactly, we're a multi-cultural society nowadays, & for some people just getting out of the house & speaking to someone, would maybe save their sanity.

Never heard of Boxing day sales? What about people who receive cash or gift vouchers for Christmas. Of course they want to see what they can spend it on.
I have actually, but only for a new cat litter tray, or maybe milk (because I've run out).

So you're gonna tell me all you Englishers trot off to church on Sundays, & that's why all the shops are closed?

That was my thought, too, but I didn’t want to upset chins.

We usually do our shopping on Sunday after we have been out for the day and England’s trading means that we always head north rather than south into England where the shops close at 4.00.

I'd just hope around the festive season store managers would favour folk with kids or families hoping to see them and let those of other faiths, no faith or those needing the money have the Boxing Day hours. Which would only be Sunday trading hours presumably, 10-4.....for myself I never shop on any Bank holibob days but that's because I blooming hate shopping!

No, small convenience stores were always open if you'd run out of milk or petrol station stores. Is consumerism that important that you can't delay spending your gift tokens for a day or two? Sometimes Christmas is the only time families can all get together. People who work hard for a living deserve some time to enjoy themselves. Britain is rapidly going back to Dickensian times when you had to work at Christmas or you work zero hours and get zero pay..

When I lived in Norf London there was a corner shop at the end of the road, owned by a Muslim family, that was always open even Christmas and Easter days...from 6am til midnight. And very convenient it often was, too! Very nice peeps and they lived over the shop so took it in turns to work downstairs. But they seemed entirely happy with that arrangement, not everyone is, I take your point chins about the right to family time. However, not everyone has a family and big festivals are not an easy time for them, going shopping or working would help those peeps

I'm quite sure there would always be people who wouldn't mind working BD. It's not as if it would be compulsory.

Calm down dear, don't get yer nightie in a knot!

I'll bet you wouldn't have any qualms about popping into a pub for a drink or two on BD or CD or even a Sunday. So it's a tad hypocritical to be up for that but not for shopping. Or aren't pub workers worthy of holidays.

What happens to people who don't have family (or no family near them), working on those days might mean they actually have the opportunity to have human contact! Christmas can be a very lonely time for some people.

Afternoon all.

People should think about friends and family every day not just Christmas day. I get sick an tired of being bombarded with Christmas from September onwards as if the world is going to end after it is over and everything has to be done for then.

We try to meet up with the kids for a meal but we do nothing else.

The reality is some people don't even like their relatives, & actually dread having to put a face on all the festivities!

I know what you mean, it gets rammed down your throat earlier & earlier each year. It's only one day FGS. I feel exactly the same about New Year, I feel I'm expected to behave a certain way, but I don't know how to do it! So I don't bother at all.

Good afternoon.

Gorgeous afternoon here, sunny and mild.

When are the Pub's Christmas decorations going up? Soon, I hope. Will there be a theme this year?

Tea please with a very large piece of fruit cake.
