Amp Receiver worth fixing ?
Kojack
18-01-2016
Hiya folks, I have a 5yr old Onyko 807 which cost me new £550, was also repaired under warranty 2yrs later for a blown HDMI board. I think I accidentally blew it up by putting and output cable into my headphone socket, I was tired and not thinking about what I was doing at the time. My question is, is it worth fixing or just getting a newer Reciever. The 807 is not 3D compatible and also not 4K compatible, if it was going to cost £200 to fix would I be just better spending £100 more and get a new one, I dont mind going for a smaller less powerful Receiver.

any help opinions appreciated.

Cheers

If you look at the specs the 807 is roughly equivalent to a modern Onkyo TX-NR545 which is about 300 quid from Amazon.

What did you plug into the headphone socket? At best it would only zap the headphone amplifier stage I would have thought, if it did anything at all. Unless in taking out the headphone amplifier it also took out the power supply stage that also feeds other essential parts of the receiver.

Hi Chris, it was an output from the back of the TV, or the other thing which I thought less likely was I got the centre speaker cable +&- the wrong way around, the AMP sparked and then a bit of smoke came now now sound comes out the blue power light just flashes, the AMP does come on then clicks and goes off again.
thanks for your help & suggestion.

wonder if a fuse might have blown when you done that?

Unplug from the mains and disconnect all speakers, leave for an hour. After an hour just plug the amp back in and switch on, if it powers up you're in luck, just reconnect all speakers and make sure you have no loose strands.

If it doesn't fire up, try resetting the amp, I think it's hold vcr/dvd down on the amp while switching if on, if should say clear on the readout if reset has been successful, if not, the chances are the amps dead.

Hi Deacon I tried that the AMP turns on for a few seconds then turns off and the Standby light starts flashing, the reset made no difference.

Don't some Onkyo's suffer from bad electrolytic caps? (I know, many items suffer from those!) but am sure there were some recent Onkyo issues?

Edit: I'll answer my own question, yes 807's seem to suffer from several problems

Yep with all the issues they have had im not sure if I would buy Onkyo again, unless I can be assured the newer models are ok and don't suffer any problems.

Sorry but comparing an 807 to a 545 and saying they're the same based on the spec is akin to saying an older 5 series BMW is the same as today's Renault Megan because they both have a two litre engine, electric windows and Sat Nav.

By all means downsize to lower position amp, but don't expect the same kind of sonic precision and grip that the 807 delivers (when working )

Personally I'd change brand completely. Onkyo was a trail blazer in terms of price/performance/features when each successive bit of new technology was announced. But the brand let itself down with these silly reliability issues. Unless 4K is an absolute 'must have' then I'd be very tempted to look at the good pre-4K used receivers currently available in the used market. There's a Yamaha RX-A1010 @ £250 on AV Forums.

I never used the word "same" I used the phrase "roughly equivalent" which in my dictionary at least does not mean "same as"

Can't think of anything you can connect to on the back of a TV that would cause any issues. Similarly getting the speaker + and - round won't harm the amp one bit. It will have an effect on the sound quality with all speakers fired up but the amp wouldn't notice. Shorting the + and - terminals though would make it sit up and take notice, though one would hope protection circuits would kick in before the amp was seriously damaged.

I would say it's probably not worth fixing. I just bought a very nice Marantz NR1605 for just over £300. I'm amazed how far AV's have come since buying my original (and still working) Yamaha back in 2000.

The only problem with the NR1605 is lack of HDCP

I sold my Yamaha DSP-A1 to help pay for my Onkyo sound wise the Onkyo didn't come close but I bought the Onkyo because the A1 lacked HD video and was too hard for the wife and kids to work out so got an AMP that just did everything at the time. Don't need a high power Receiver any more just one that does most things has good connectivity I guess life's getting simpler with age.

Thanks for help and response guys.
