After reading all these depressing threads, I think we should have a thread showing of the exciting young talent there is around and that there is still music that is catchy, played with guitars,with melodies even though it gets nowhere near the charts. To keep it kinda unknown nothing with more than 50000 YouTube views if possible.

As an "oldie" I wasn't that impressed. But as they say, "each to their own."

As for influences, contemporary groups have often been influenced by artists of previous eras. You say Yukon Blonde, were influenced by the Beach Boys?

I listened to all three and they weren't anything special to be honest.
You said that they had catchy melodies. No they didn't. None of them will be remembered in 35 years time. I liked the video to the first one but melody wise it was an in one ear and instantly out the other just like the other two. I'm not surprised they didn't get anywhere. If these records were released in the 80s and got in the chart they would have probably got about as high as 30-ish.
Do you honestly think that those apparent catchy records will be remembered in years to come in the same way Mr Blue Sky or Wuthering Heights or Stand and Deliver or I Don't like Mondays is remembered. No.

of course none of them will be remembered in 35 years as none of them are anywhere close to being hits. I am nominated songs that with airplay could have been big hits and woudl make the charts a better place thats all. They would appeal more to 90s fans I think ok I will go more obvious.

Bit of a tall older matching classics like those anyway doubt there has been anything released in 2015 that will match any of them. Btw I am 44 just used the 'oldie' word because of that other thread. Thinking you are right there is probably nothing from now that I like that I will still remember in 35 years but as I will probably be dead thats ok. But i will plan on still be listening to new music until that day comes.

Seriously though we had three channels and TOTp and alll listened to the same radio stations thats why these songs got drummed into our heads, you cant compare that with hearing a song once although hated 'Wuthering Heights' for most of my life.

I quite like Yukon Blonde. I saw them at the Great Escape a few years ago, they put on a good show and I brought their first two albums from the show and actually got 'Tiger Talk' signed by a couple of the group. They aren't doing anything remotely original but they are good at what they do and sometimes that's enough.

I'm afraid the DS music forums can be a frustrating place at times if you are a music fan. Of your selections I especially liked Asylums.
The BBC Sound longlist this year is pretty strong. Some of the artists I already knew but Dua Lipa especially stands out an artist to look out for.

Is Stand and Delivered well remembered? I don't even hear that many Adam and the Ants tracks being played in 2016. Has for the other tracks well as much as I am a fan of ELO and Kate Bush I have gotten bloody tired of hearing those tracks anyway. And The Boomtown Rats? Well most of their catalogue was pretty forgettable.

It's a great idea for a thread, but the problem you'll have is that many of the "oldies" are so entrenched in their own personal tastes and genres that they won't consider anything outside of that, which is, of course, absolutely fine.

It's somewhat akin to trying to convince someone who thinks all rap music is the same and about "gangstas" that there's better, more creative stuff out there.

The trick is to just put the good stuff out there and if it takes, it takes. If not, at least you've potentially made other people aware of more good music.

Speaking as an "oldie", I agree, as you get older for many their musical taste do get entrenched and they are less open to new music.

I have my favourite genres, like most people do, but in saying that Hard Rock/Heavy Metal is such a vast genre it will take a lifetime to scratch the surface as it is always evolving and expanding.

generally yes... but i dont think thats necessarily the case on here - as i think 'us oldies' are here because we still like music.

op..... the point has never really been that theres no new music out there, the point is that nowdays we are told we have to 'search' for it, whilst in the past we didnt, some of it was there in the charts, on the radio.

the nominated tracks might be 'good', but they are hardly original.

What those tracks demonstrated was that the need to search for new music has had a negative impact on creativity. All those tracks were tailored to suit an audience that clicks on tracks and clicks away again if they don't like them. There's very little wriggle room for new ideas when your goal is to stop people clicking away before you've notched up enough time to qualify as a "view".

As an oldie I try to avoid music that is designed to build up "views" on YouTube etc in favour of stuff that takes a while to get under my skin. But then if music works its way into my system I'll buy it rather than just listening to it online. I think that's another symptom of being an oldie: you value music enough to pay for it, and if it's not worth paying for, it's not worth listening to.

Is there any original music and if there was would I listen to it I'm 44 so I am effected by my music growing up so I love 80 synths , grungy guitars, baggy beats, bands that found like bands I liked when I was younger examples like Wolf Alice and Chvrches both current bands but loved by my age as well as we know the influences .

Being originial the closest we get is doing something different with those styles from the past a band like Everything Everything does that for example

There are just so many things you can do with some instruments and a voice and still be listenable

None of the music I picked was designed to build up views on YouTube , it's just a convenient way to link music and gives you some idea how popular a band is, major YouTube video hits have millions or billions of views

Almost every song every made is on YouTube it's just a resource.

I meant that there is pressure on artists to get lots of views on YouTube, so they are less likely to make music that might make people click away because it doesn't have instant appeal.

Nothing new sounding about any of these, they could all easily have been released ten, twenty years ago.

I'm sorry but I don't feel indie has moved on at all in the space of ten, twenty years. You had the same girls on guitar or trendy boy girl combo or house music all somewhat harking back to the 80's. By the way, Here's some new music from 2003.

I think you're being a little unfair to "the oldies." Think about it, they've been subjected to a succession of guitar thrashers for decades, many from the school; "If you can't play well, play loud."
Often the tunes are repetitive, the musicianship suspect, (even with digital enhancements) and the voices are nothing special. Even the "on-stage antics" are reminiscent of groups from the sixties.

I took the trouble to listen to part of each link posted and I didn't think any were any better or much different to "the legions who've come before."

As an "oldie" I don't mind if some people think these groups are wonderful, it can't make any difference to me, can it?

Me too.....s'only (insert relevant music style here) but I like it.

I'm 50...so kinda old...I used to be a lot more bothered by 'new' music that I saw as "not as good as what went before". Nowadays it bothers me less and less as I don't really come across it very often, and if I do I can always remind myself it's not meant for me and look elsewhere
