Been big in the indie scene and Introducing for last 3 years, this is their major label debut mixing folk pop with big music, kind of Snow Patrol meets Mumfords, yes comparing to other bands again but it just makes me feel good.

The Coral - Chasing The Tail Of A Dream

Love this so much kind of Blur meets C86 by way of Divine Comedy.”

I didn't go much on the first and third one but I quite liked Chasing the tail of a dream. Both the song and the video had a bit of a retro feel to it. Probably why I liked it

I admit that much of the new music I like is very retro in it's vibe. My personal hero is Dave Lee - aka Joey Negro - and much of the music released on his ZR label is very 70s and 80s influenced.

In the last year or so, my favourite new music is by

Layabouts
Lack Of Afro
Sean McCabe
Smoove and Turrell
Opolopo
Michele Chiavarini
DJ Spen
Tuxedo
Tortured Soul
Reel People

Any quite a few other artists

I love Yukon Blonde, On Blonde was one of my favourite albums of last year, but even I thought Como was weak. Saturday Night, I Wanna Be Your Man, You Broke the Law and Make U Mine were my favourites.

I don't care if something is original or not, I want it to sound good. A few examples from last year;

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Necessary Evil

Sunflower Bean - Wall Watcher

Neon Indian - Annie

Froth - Postcard Radio

Had I been around I'd have loved John Peel's show. These days there's John Kennedy on Radio X in the evenings, he's my favourite. Gideon Coe's show is my favourite on 6 Music, and I occasionally put on Huw Stephens' show.

I know The Coral very well I have 'Butterfly House' but they are a 90s band. I thought new music also meant new artist, perhaps not?

I also like that you like NI bands!

Why not go and check out some old music from the past which you don't know?

I was around for John Peel and I listened to him religiously. If the kind of music that is being posted here is anything to go by, you would have loved The Peel Show. I remember John saying one night as he played new track after track just how many bands were out there. There was more reggae and ska on Peel than you would get on modern radio or indeed referenced in this thread but it was great. Even so when Joy Division came on one night you just knew you were listening to something special.
I wonder which one if the artists listed here has the same effect or future?

I like The Twoks song. I will listen to other tracks. The Slow Readers Club song is almost good and the video is quite reasonable....the little black dress goes a long way.

An awful lot of the 'new' music is very alt rock and alt pop oriented...does this tell me something about the thread's demographics?

It probably tells you more about the thread's title.

Because I am trying to provide an alternative to what is in the charts, I coudl list lots of more pop or electronic songs but not sure they woudl go done well with the 'oldies'

and yes good point about The Coral, they are early 00s but its too damn good to miss out on if you havent heard it.

But why do you need an alternative to what's in the charts when Kendrick Lamar's 'To Pimp a Butterfly' or The Weeknd's 'Beauty Behind the Madness' or The Alabama Shakes 'Sound and Colour' were all in the charts and are all better than anything you have listed?

Interesting aside. 'Sound and Colour' was a bigger seller than 'Boys and Girls' in all the leading music markets....apart from the UK where it has only sold a third of 'Boys and Girls' did.

I own Alabama Shakes but it's not a patch on their debut and Weekend is good pop but we have plenty pop in the charts and Kendrick is amazing hip hop but again we have no lack if that in the charts.

I can list lots of brilliant music that made the album charts but that's not what this is about. We want stuff that isn't in the charts and just coz you don't like it doesn't mean someone else won't , you choices are very hipster anyway.

When most people complain about modern music they're talking about CHART music.
People say you have to search for good music these days. The very fact you have to 'search' for it tells you instantly a lot about todays music. Some people have put links to songs which they think proves good music is still out there but none of those songs are up there with the likes of this

You linked Hall & Oates, "Private Eyes,"

I've been impressed with Hall's writing for decades, he's a good example because his songs often have a more interesting chord structure.
I bought "The Silver Album" after they first appeared on "Whistle Test," with "Camellia," in 1975 or 76.
More people must keep discovering them, as their 1973 album, "Abandoned Luncheonette," finally "went platinum" in 2002!

Here are three of the best unknownish singles from 2015 to give a taste, all these are songs that in the past could have been hits. They are all very different.

Asylums - Joy In A Small Wage

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdETnxggDuE

Bringing back memories of the late 90s bands like Terrorvision and Supergrass, pure guitar pop.

All Tvvins - Thank You

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUh8X705Xrc

Brilliant electropop from Eire, better than the bland Years And Years

Yukon Blonde - Como

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLYYQBHtXuU

One of the most melodic pop songs of 2015 influences of Beach Boys, Arcade Fire, Amerikana with a hint of synth pop”

Love that!

Here is my one and only contribution to this thread. 2015 was a little disappointing for me and this is the only "catchy-song-that's-nothing-like-current-chart-music-that-may-also-appeal-to-'oldies'" that I can think of right now:

Destroyer - Times Square

Actually I thought 2015 was a great year for music, pop music in particular. And here's a track (Traveling Song) by Ryn Weaver that knocks Adele for six. This is what good lyrics sound like.

The charts aren't a complete loss either.

Kurt Vile - Pretty Pimpin

The single hit #29 in the US, and the album hit #25 on the british charts.

It has that CCR sound that makes it very retro and different from the rest of the charts.

Yes! Easily the best on the Poison Season album. Saw him in Brighton, was a bit underwhelmed by the way he acted on stage. Great voice though.

A French duo, Her, with Five Minutes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqM3APrfijU

You can listen to 6 Music and hear loads of pleasant songs/tracks/whatever, but there's never anything really original. Have we finally reached the stage where everything worth listening to has already been done? After all, there are only so many permutations and everything ever recorded is available in almost an instant. Is it possible for anyone ever to produce anything that hasn't obviously been borrowed from past recordings? (That's excluding unlistenable stuff produced by idiots who just want a minute in the limelight).

Definitely some good stuff in 2015 but I thought it would be better. Wasn't truly impressed by that much. But my most anticipated release (Divers) is awesome so I'm happy anyway and gave me plenty to get my teeth into.

Yes, it's good to look outside the UK/US for interesting new music.

Maybe try Italy? Calibre 35: https://youtu.be/N7Zqu--0NF0
Or the Democratic Republic of Congo? Mbongwana Star: https://youtu.be/cAZxMZBZ628

Lots of new music doesn't sound like indie or rock.

Yes. Justin Beiber isn't meant for me, and my only thought on what I've heard and seen of him is that he isn't as good, vocally, as David Cassidy, the equivalent from the 70's. It's a similar thing with One Direction, except to my ears they sound better produced than the 70's equivalent, The Bay City Rollers.

It's the singer songwriter category that is much worse nowadays. Sure there are some great new acts out there, but those actually having success all sound like they're doing poor impressions of earlier acts.

What I would LOVE to see is the arrival of an act that has the look and the singing voice(s) and the talent of Bowie or the Eagles. But, it doesn't seem likely from what's on the horizon. This is not so much being stuck in the past as the past being stuck in me, and tens of millions of others of varying ages. I have a 17 year-old niece, who prefers old rock bands because there's nothing new to compare. No one makes her listen to this stuff, it's entirely her own choice. Hopefully, someone revolutionary will come along one day.

"Fashion" in music changes quite frequently. At one time, "little girls, with little voices, singin' little songs," seemed to be popular,

I was going to say "seemed to be En Vogue," but they were different..
