The Eagles are an odd choice for a band with an innovative look.

There are some good bands and singers out there with Eagles-y songs and vocals.

How about Jonathan Wilson or Dawes?

Destroyer - Times Square”

I don't class that song as catchy. It was a bit in one ear and out the other.

Before anyone puts a link to an apparently catchy modern song go to post 63 and think is it REALLY as good as those songs.

oooh challenge love Depeche Mode and Hall & Oates are good not fussed about the other two ok how about... You have 40 years to pick from and I have to find anything in 2015 that comes close. Sure there is nothing in 2015 that even matches my favourite 100 80s songs but come on be realistic you cant compete with nostalgia it is overpouring. Here are some songs that make 2015 worth existing for imo.

It's catchier to me than the four old songs you posted (none of which did anything for me at all and are not what I would choose as good examples of older music).

It goes back to what I said earlier. We all have our own specific taste and finding a match is not always easy. I used to spend a long time looking for new music and I can tell you that for every 100 new songs I listened to, probably only 5 were keepers (i.e. songs that I really liked and made me want to listen to more of that artist). You soon learn to expect that you'll have to listen to a lot of stuff you don't like until you find something you do.

Don't worry, I learnt that many a moon ago. The only thing these days is that I have to listen to far more stuff to find something I like than I did 30 years ago.

No.

You picked a rubbish Depeche song. They got better when Alan Wilder joined, even within a year of See You they were making better tunes.

Hall & Oates track was alright, That Status Quo song reminded me of their 'Whatever You Want' - instrumentally. Rockin' all over the World is a decent enough tune.

I didn't think the Manfred Mann's Earth Band song was that special. Still prefer Blinded by the Light.

This band have been going 20 years, but this was the track that introduced me to them last year.

Right then.
The first one was ok. Quite a powerful chorus.

I didn't really like the second, third and fourth but I like the last one - Empty Threat.

I wouldn't say See You was rubbish. My favourite Depeche Mode song is Shake The Disease. That just kicks butt. I was going to pick that but I thought more people would know See You.
Here's Shake the disease if you want to check it out.
I love the instrumental bit near the end between 4.08 - 4.23. For some reason that sound and the melody reminds me of a cloudy day back in '85. Don't ask me why.

Actually here's a couple of modern songs that I like. They're about 2-3 years old.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwVA5zYfNWw

I reckon the melody of the chorus of this one (starts at 59 seconds) is nicked from Edge of 17 by Stevie Nicks.

I love Shake the Disease and it's video and I can see why you'd have that scene in your head. I don't know how I can picture a cloudy day in 1985 haha

DM were a big thing for me a few years ago, but my favourite era of theirs will always be Construction Time Again to Violator (1983-1990). There are tracks from 1993 onwards albums I like but I was underwhelmed by everything since Exciter bar Should be Higher. Loved that song! I loved the documentaries that came with each album, fascinating all the way through.

I Feel You, Barrel of a Gun, Home, I Feel Loved, Wrong and Peace are the post Violator songs I like.

I also liked the Lissie song in 2013 or 14.

A modern band I've loved a few years now are coming back with their first album since I got into them, and they're playing at a festival I want to go to.

There's many reasons for that, as has been discussed hundreds of times on this forum. If you think about it, it shouldn't really be a surprise that music is not the same as 30 years ago or that our attitude to music is different 30 years later. I think generally as people get older they refine their taste in music and become fussier/harder to please.

But could that be because there's a lot of poor quality pop music around?
Sometimes I think the production of "the video" gets more attention than the actual writing and singing of the music. But that's not just confined to contemporary music.

For example. Robert Palmer, who I like. I've a VHS tape of all his music videos.

This was OK. (in my opinion). 22M hits.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcATvu5f9vE

Same treatment. But this was a pretty rubbish tune. Not the original video, can't find that now, this is the "Pepsi one."

you can go on about all this 'great new music' that appears to have escaped us senile old gits...

but in the future.... out with your mates, how tf are you going to get the same level of nostalgia when you have no common musical bond?

ive got mates from all eras in music, especially the late 70's early 80's .. they often have great fun reminiscing about their youth, with 'their' music, their love of 'their time' can be shared by a common interest in the music in the charts of the time..

how tf can this work now if all the 'good' music needs searching for?... theres little or no common bond.

Nostalgia isn't about how good music was, it's about the good times you had whilst the music was playing. If today's young people are reminiscing in 40 years' time they'll be nostalgic about the parties and clubs and live gigs they went to, not the times they watched YouTube with their headphones on. Except, maybe watching YouTube with your headphones on will seem terribly quaint and old-fashioned 40 years from now.

I don't know why you'd think the younger generation wouldn't have a common musical bond. There are tons of songs on youtube that are full of "X brought me here" comments.

Foals - Spanish Sahara

*Every* comment is about the videogame Life is Strange, because the song was used at a particularly emotional moment. So all those people have a *shared* emotional connection to that song.

This is actually the case for every song used in Life is Strange because they did such a good job of finding appropriate music. Every song in the soundtrack is dominated by LIS comments:

Syd Matters - Obstacles

All those people are tracking down the songs on youtube in order to relive the more emotional parts of the game, as well as connect with other people who experienced the same thing.

Even if Oldies did hear a brand new sound they would probably hate it anyway. every new genre gets slated. most people seem to listen to a song for 30 seconds and if it doesn't grab them they switch off (i say oldies, but i'm nearly 40)

I agree with you. I hear an old song now and I instantly flashback to being in a certain bar, club, party, holiday or being with certain people. I know it's a cliche about music being the soundtrack to your life but it's true. If they made a film of any of our lives, we know exactly what song we'd have played over which scene.

Although I get the point that music isn't so linked to youth fashion as it was back in our day, it's still important to kids and will still be something they look back on fondly.

I don't know why you picked all live versions because sometimes I don't think live music does the song justice but the Jazmine Sullivan track 'Let It Burn' was a thousand times better than the others by a country mile. The others were either rap shit or just boring. But thanks for introducing me to Let It Burn. Reminded me a bit of Hanging on a string by Loose Ends, very mid 80s soul sound to it.
