I liked the "tyres available" graphic at the start comparing the top three on the grid, which I don't recall seeing before but doesn't mean it wasn't there.

Was I wrong, or did Hamilton cut the corner at the start without any penalty?
Yes he made a good start, but he CLEARLY went off and went around the marker post and rejoined in 5th place as the virtual safety car was called, and then just continued in 5th after. In other news: I had to smirk at the drivers ignoring Putin - or at least, saying hello then walking away. |

I think Hamilton was justified in taking to the run-off because of the incidents ahead of him but yes it did look as if he made up a bit too much time because of it. |

They took way too long with the replays of T2. |

Steve Jones still looks a bit lost in his role as Channel 4 F1 Lead Presenter.

You're right. He made no attempt at all to make the corner, and just sailed off into the run-off area. They badly need to adjust that corner for next year.

Watching it live initially I wasn't 100% sure if Hamilton slowed down a bit in Turn 3 when he rejoined to let Vettel go through because he thought he'd gained too many positions from the very move you mentioned and that in itself had been the trigger for the Vettel/Kvyat incident. Not actually sure if that's what happened but the replays weren't much help.
I think Hamilton was justified in taking to the run-off because of the incidents ahead of him but yes it did look as if he made up a bit too much time because of it. With the Ferrari shambles continuing via the Vettel DNF this season could quickly turn into a ratings disaster. |

And Bernie there with him too was just cringe-worthy! Why he has to be in the room i will never know, apart from ego of course!! |

Getting the teams mixed up...
On Hamilton, watching the start back he didn't really gain an advantage at all really.
He was on the outside of Vettel, Kvyat and Ricciardo when they all touched, and other than gaining ground from the 3 of them coming together he never gained any positions by going off. The car in front of the 4 of them was a Force India and he remained behind it. He was beneficiary of Vettel ending up in the wall and Kvyat and Ricciardo getting damage. |

I laughed at the ego-maniac style questions coming from him to the drivers such as "do you think the setup here was good?"

Although the Ch 4 graphics have Hamilton's point difference as +7 rather than -7, which seems a bit strange.

I have no idea how much Russia pays for its GP but given the prominence they give to Putin it must be at least double what any other country pays for it...

Normally they are falling over themselves to show replays of the start, but they were quite poor today - and I don't think we really saw any clear replays of the incident at the back.

Looking from the on board feed from Hamilton of the start, not only was his decision to take the runoff the only thing that prevented him from being Kvyatted at the start too but I can't believe the harsh chop Vettel pulled on the force india and other cars behind through the kink, that nearly caused an accident all of its own.
Another low point was how Soap Opera Sky were being over Vettel's exit. Replaying their own picture in picture of his arrival in the paddock (over the start replays!), more picture in picture about 20 seconds before FOM picked up the same shot on the world feed (meaning we were treated to Vettel chatting to Horner....twice) and general caring more about the theatrics of Vettel being a bit unhappy than anything happening on track. Sums up sky's attitude to the sport in a nutshell really. Aside from that a race of two halves, good start with a few front runners out of position, dull second half when we seemingly were just running the positions home. I dread to think how dull it would've been if the SC hadn't let them save enough fuel to make it semi-exciting though FOM are locked into the lap 3 start replays though aren't they, even if it takes them a good age to get to lap 3 under the SC. If it was VSC it would've taken even longer!

There will be crashes, there will be incidents in the beginnings of races. Just because its Vettel, for me doesn't make it that much more dramatic the need for PiP over WF replays and then hyperbole from commentary and pundits! Sky's post race coverage is so bad now that i don't even bother with it. I skip straight to Teds Notebook (Where i hope Niki Lauda swears every time ) and then thats it for me.

Is there some sort of logical reason as to why FOM are blindly stuck to that? I can't think of any, other than just annoying consistency.

I know that some tend to dislike the start replays but I've always quite liked them as its nearly impossible to see everything that happens on a start live & the replays give a nice chance to get a better look at everyone's start & see where everyone gained or lost ground & if there was any near misses or little bits of contact that I didn't spot live. |

Maybe it's always around lap 3 because thats just how long it takes them to look at all the angles & decide what to include & get it all together for the replay package.

There were a few occasions when they waited till lap 6 or so, which is generally enough time for the most exciting bit of most races to have settled down and thoughts can turn to understanding the start properly without being quite so rushed. |

I dunno, Vettel going off has been the most interesting/entertaining part of the season thus far, it might end up being the high point for the whole year. I was impressed with him managing to swear in perfect English, is that part of his FOM contract?

Vettel's English is superb - largely because he grew up watching Fawlty Towers (in English, not dubbed German). As his appearance on Top Gear showed, he can even do accents.
