I assume Vettel speaks to his (Italian?) race engineer during a race in the common language of English so his mind would be switched to English mode?

Not exactly broadcasting related, but what is the benefit of a Virtual Safety Car on the first lap, i can understand on (say) lap 20 when leads have been built up

Immediate cessation of racing until further information on the accidents can be obtained by race control.

In previous times they would have Red flagged and restarted. It may have been a better option but the VSC & SC keep the race going and avoid extensions to the coverage that may affect the broadcasters

Broadcasters know extensions to broadcast-time is very possible. They know as such when booking satellite space!
VSC was never introduced because of broadcasters either!

Maybe I am old fashioned (and not that you want to see serious incidents) but on a first lap crash I liked the whole restart and new 5-lights and off standing re-start setup. Belgium 2001 the last that happened the old fashioned traditional way off the top of my head? 2002 Australia was the first time they moved to the keep the race running job routine. Then later we've had red flags in more recent years they do the safety car for a lap then rolling start. Not the same!

Some fairly significant news. Brundle will be racing in the first ever LMP3 race at Le Mans.

http://www.dailysportscar.com/2016/0...lmp3-race.html

I wonder if he'll miss just the Friday and Saturday of Baku or the entire weekend? Pretty sure that's the first race he'll be missing since Hungary 2008.

I suspect Sky will probably put Damon in the commentary box. He filled in once or twice for Brundle back in the ITV days, I seem to remember.

I can't remember when or where but I'm sure I remember hearing at some point about 10 years ago that one of the reasons they moved away from the standing restarts after red flags was because the clutches on modern F1 cars don't handle multiple standing race stars well.

I also saw somewhere at about the same time that Charlie Whiting said going into the 2002 season that he was going to be less willing to throw a red for 1st lap accidents because he wanted drivers to use there heads a bit more on lap 1.

I doubt any broadcaster is happy with programs over or under-running tbh.

Along as it's not Johnny, I'm fine with whoever. Can you imagine Herbert and Croft doing comms for a race

Yeah I've read similar re clutches not handling multiple starts well in the past.

Re 2002, it's ironic he said that and then we ended up with what must've been the best part of half the field either out of the race or driving round with damage in the first race of 2002. I suppose the other reason is, as proven in a sense by Canada 1998 where there was a big crash then on the restart there was another biggish/awkward crash, if you keep restarting races after a big crash, you risk the same happening again and again and again, whereas safety car or a safety car rolling restart after a red flag makes that less likely, especially as some first corners (on the first lap) are generally seen as more accident prone than others.

I'd have my money on Di Resta.

During the Russian Gp only 15 radio messages were broadcast on the world-feed & pits channel.... The other 3 races didn't see that many more either.
http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2016/05/0...io-transcript/

Compare that to last season:
http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2015/12/0...io-transcript/

As I've said already this year I get that people didn't like the amount of coaching that was going on & do agree that some of that needed to be stopped, But things have just gone way too far in the other direction now because were just not hearing anything & I feel its taken away something that gave an added extra insight into things.

I used to spend a decent amount of time on the pits channel for the extra bits of radio, This year with virtually no radio & the new layout its pretty much pointless outside of using it to watch the world-feed during Sky's practice session ad-breaks & the post session highlights reel.

Why does Keith feel the need to put '[Censored by FOM]' in instead of '****'? It's so petty, It's making out like FOM are evil moralisers for bleeping out swearwords in the middle of the afternoon, when (as a broadcaster himself) he knows damn well that bad language isn't tolerated anywhere in most countries that time of day. Maybe if he feels that bleeps are a bad thing, he should swear live on one of his BT sport shows. If bleeping is so evil like he's implying, then BT & their viewers will surely welcome his language with open arms

He'll miss the whole weekend. With Quali on Thursday at Le Mans going into the night; Friday is press and promotional appearances and the race Sat and Sun; he has no chance.

The LMP3 race is only Saturday - could theoretically jet over for Sunday.

How else could it be recorded that FOM censored the words, rather than broadcast them?

Excellent video has been uploaded to the F1 App showing onboards of the Russia race start from Ricciardo, Alonso, Gutierrez, Haryanto and Palmer.

As good as it however, I can't help but feel it'd have been far better to see FOM show some of these onboards during the start replays (they had plenty of time due to the SC), if that's at all possible.

EDIT: Turns out it's on the website, also: http://www.formula1.com/content/fom-...seen-best.html

Leading on from my post about the radio restrictions earlier:
http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2016/05/0...iracy-theories

Quote:
“Shortly after his pit stop, we saw some alarming behaviour from Nico’s MGU-K. We spent a number of laps reassuring him that he had a good gap over Lewis and could ease off before the FIA gave us the all-clear to tell him to switch to a setting that would control the issue.

Not long after Nico’s issue arose, we started to see the water pressure falling on Lewis’ car. At the time, he was pushing hard to catch Nico and pull away from Kimi – posting several purple lap times in the process. Again, we needed to await confirmation from the FIA of what we could tell him via the radio. After several calls asking him to take it easy, the all-clear came to let him know that he was losing water pressure.”

That is ridiculous, If there is an issue with the car they should be able to inform the driver without having to ask the FIA for permission.

That doesn't tell you the words weren't broadcast though. The website (rather than FOM) could be censoring the words to prevent being caught up in adult web filters that would stop the page being shown.

True. They could right BLEEP instead of asterix's though.

There are at least 10 onboard angles available of the Russian GP start: Hamilton, Vettel, Kvyat, Ricciardo, Alonso, Magnussen, Palmer, Haryanto, Gutierrez and Hulkenberg - I guess that's a new record for FOM...

Assuming the reports about the increased no. of cameras they can have running simultaneously are true, in theory they have all 22...
