It’s been discussed plenty in here before, but certainly in IndyCar and F1 (I don’t think they do it in Nascar, but might be wrong), the majority of ad breaks are run ‘side-by-side’ with the on-track action. There’s no audio from the track, but you can tell what is going on if you pay attention. Not ideal, but better than actual full ad breaks.
After watching all the pre-race stuff ‘alternatively’, I only watched the race on BT after I noticed they were showing it with the proper graphics and coverage, rather than the rusty old international feed stuff, and it was really quite good having their own commentary during the ad breaks, rather than side-by-side or the actual ads. Didn’t really appreciate them cutting over the commentary with about 10 laps to go with their theory on why Helio or Bourdais were going to win the race, which turned out to be way off the mark.
