It wasn't the second DRS Zone but the lack of a second detection point that really killed it.

Really enjoyed seeing the return of EJ, it's a big shame he's so limited in appearances. Didn't miss "Johnny and the boys" even a little bit.

Surely the answer to the radio problem is to allow unlimited communication from pits to car only whilst the car is in the pit lane. After all, for any physical help with the car it must come in to the pits

Im totally against driver coaching. Rosberg was the biggest cause of the radio-content ban because he wanted to be told everything and how to take this corner and braking where etc!
But to not allow the team to tell the driver what setting a car needs to be in to correct a tech fault that will allow a driver to be competitive and give us a good race is madness.
But this is also down to the FIA for allowing so many settings for so many settings for so many settings!
Its stupid and that alone needs to be curtailed so it isn't so complicated so if this ban on radio help continues.
The fans got robbed of what would have been a great battle with Hamilton because of the ban. That is shit for the sport!

It's not the first time this season that post-race it's turned out Rosberg apparently had the same problem as Hamilton had, it just wasn't referred to during the race. Though maybe Nico is just better at seeing the problem, and solving it without any radio histrionics.
well yes the radio feeds that are broadcast on TV seem to be picked for their histrionics/swearing/complaints, its only if Sky bother to listen to the team loops that they obv have access to the "unbroadcast" stuff is picked up.

unfortunately I think Skys focus is weighted far more towards Lewis, than Nico, so Nicos issues probably dont get the same coverage. I can quite imagine in the reverse situation, Nico would not have had half as much sympathy or encouragement to break the rules and face the consequences from the Sky team as Lewis got, and it would have been suggested it was his own fault for not knowing the proper settings, and maybe he should spend more time in the simulator, as they kind of blamed Nico in Barcelona for not setting the switches properly.

but there you go F1 has gone down such a fundamentally blind alley on tech like this its not adding to the racing, maybe the ACO should write F1s next rule book.

Not got too much to say about today really, aside from the fact that I wish FOM would stop with the obsession of focusing on an empty track for a good 4-5 seconds before a car suddenly comes into view. Nobody finds that entertaining.

I like the empty track shots. It lets me focus on the advertising boards without being distracted by the noisy vehicles!

Also, it visually shows us which part of the track HASN'T got any action or overtaking on, which can affect the championship battle.

Strange track - a drag strip and some back alleys. I can see it lasting though because it's different.

I agree it's nice to see EJ back. He does the best podiums. Nice banter with DC. I wonder if it's in his contract they they have to disagree. I always liked that aspect and they played on it yesterday and EJ even mentioned that he disagreed as usual......

I like that idea of unlimited radio in the pits only.

Interesting to see Lee on the driver's parade too for C4. Sky seemed to have that exclusively and Sky's interviews go out live at the circuit. Although I also think that on the parade lap, all the drivers should face outwards and wave to the crowd all the way around the lap as it's the closest most will get to them.

It's hardly the FIAs fault. Maybe Mercedes simply have set up their systems too much for engineers; i.e. too complicated for the drivers. We don't hear the same from other teams. Several bad starts; Rosberg in the wrong mode in Spain leading to the collision, and then both drivers having issues in Baku. Lauda said Rosberg "guessed right" and Hamilton "guessed wrong". Something seriously wrong if they're relying on drivers' guesses.

I think the rule is a good one; it's just a little painful when you hear the engineers saying "I'm not allowed to tell you". Presumably there was nothing to stop Lewis coming into the pits and having the engineer press the right button for him, which means there's a penalty for the driver not being able to operate the machinery properly. Which is how it should be.

I thought the race was okay; not great. It highlights how quantity of overtaking isn't what's important.

I enjoyed LeMans. If Eurosport could just cut out the silly mistakes "we're going to a break. We're not going to a break" their coverage would be excellent I think. In the morning I watched 24 minutes to find out what I'd missed, and we had a bit of the "welcome to Eurosport 2" commentary over the top. And despite telling us the live coverage would continue on Eurosport 2 they were actually showing some recorded motorcycling.

If Hamilton had the problem from the start then the engineers could have corrected it for him during his pit stop, changing strategy if need be to bring him in earlier?

A few words on Le Mans.

I'm still grumpy today about the result, I've witnessed some cruel things over the years but that takes it to the extreme. At the time I took it on the chin and just thought that’s racing, as the hours have since ticked by I’ve been finding this growing sense of injustice and anger welling up inside me about it. To not have the car even classified is beyond harsh (cough cough…. Peugeot 2007).

I had no problem with the RLM streams over the weekend, they were reliable and buffering wasn't a problem. I started the race watching the main ES feed with a bit of live timing and onboard's around me. It was a shame the onboard’s for #5, #6, and #7 were dead from the start, I was loving the Toyota's hunting the Porsche's in the early stints. The adverts on ES soon got to me though. I spent the next few hours faffing between differing setups.

I had quite a few issues syncing everything up together between the differing apps, the WEC stream was my preferred choice but there was no natural sound feed and the two commentators were dull as dishwater. I can't understand why the Eurosport Player provides a natural sound feed yet the official app doesn't. Anyway by midnight after trialling a few different combinations I found my perfect setup.

Laptop plugged into TV with two internet tabs open, Radio Le Mans youtube broadcast in one tab, and Eurosport Player on the other (set to full screen). The Eurosport feed was set to the 3:1 view (main, pit lane and onboard). I typically found Eurosport Player around 15 seconds behind RLM but syncing was a doodle. The WEC app feed wandered between 30-45 secs out of syncing with live timing and the commentary. I put the WEC app on a separate laptop and treated it as the GT class coverage with rotating onboard's between the top GT cars. I used a couple of other tablets for live timing, P2 onboards, and lap tracker. My setup > https://i.imgsafe.org/7d20dbc8ec.jpg

Commentary
ES – The commentary team are ok, they do a good job given the restrictions they have. I love Jeremy Shaw, Damien Faulkner and kinda ambivalent towards Martin Haven. I quite like Liz Haliday even if her pit interviews amount to confirming night follows day. The adverts on ES were a welcome break to begin with but soon become massively annoying and I didn’t watch anymore ES (ES1 feed) from around 9 hours into the race. I’ve got the whole 24 hr recorded on ES1/2 and will rewatch over the next few months (it’s my default ‘moving wallpaper’ on the tv when nothing’s on).

WEC – Coma inducing, although informed it just seemed sterile with two fans commentating.

RLM – The clue is in the title, by far the best of the teams. I did miss Hindy and Goodwin commentating on the main TV feeds (to me Hindy is the voice of Le Mans) but got my fix dialling up RLM. It’s the first year I’ve properly binned off the ES main commentary and I didn’t look back. I don’t understand why the two teams can’t be combined. It seems wrong to have Jeremy Shaw and Graham Goodwin commentating ‘against’ each other. Spoilt for choice in one respect but not a choice I think we should have to make. Shea was solid enough in the pits even if the drivers do refuse to answer anything overly probing (too much ‘it’s a long race, we’ll wait and see’ talk). It’s rubbish logging into work this morning and having no live stream to dial up. I did find Paul Truswell’s mic quiet and hard to hear at points.

ES 24 Minutes – I like the little excerpts but don’t really see the point in it, to me it got in the way of the main coverage. I’m not sure who it’s aimed at, casuals won’t seek it out and anybody watching the race will already know what’s happening. Funny seeing the host and TK getting drenched before race start. The host was visibly straining to keep in the ‘FFSakes’ at the weather.

Road To Le Mans Support Race – No TV coverage this year I could find, found a link direct from the ACO Le Mans website a few min before lights out.

The Good
Being left to watch a 24 hour race uninterrupted (my OH disappeared out for the weekend)……
Sky Fibre – Can’t complain after having up to 6 streams all running between 720p and 1080p without streaming issues or connection drops
The Mountain of snacks I consumed guilt free
Differing feeds, F1 should take note!!!
Watching Eurosport Player in the shower (waterproof phone), a few years ago it was one tv feed buried on MotorsTV, times have changed. It’s great to see LM in ascendency and embracing differing platforms.
Visiting Le Mans a few weeks ago, it really helped appreciating the scale of the place. I found myself looking for off track oddities I remembered and it brought back very happy memories.
RLM/Community – It’s not just about this race, but in the months after/leading up to LM I listen to Midweek Motorsport and love the community aspect of it all. In the darkest depths of December you’ll see a tweet from someone in the sport or from the collective and it puts a smile on your face. I don’t get that from F1 anymore, just witness endless tribal debates and fandom.
Frederic Sausset – How inspiring, just wow.

The Bad
Inability to pause and sync WEC app.
Unable to run two PC streams from Eurosport (but it does permit one PC and multiple tablets/phones)
My cats bringing in frogs throughout the night as a warning for some attention.
Frequency and repetition of ES adverts
It’s all over for another year and returning to being a Le Mans Loner
Driver Tracker – It never seems to run smoothly for me on the WEC app, the cars are often so far removed from their real time position it’s pointless.
No qualifying 2 on ES

Formula 1

After the unbelievable events at the end of Le Mans I was not in the mood for F1. I had planned to pause the start and turn over 15 min into the race and quickly catch up to the live timing/broadcast. I think it was around 9 last night I was finally able to sit down and watch it, I didn’t miss much.

I thought the track looked fantastic, it looked like a giant Formula E track on steroids. Some of the camera angles were fantastic and really conveyed the speed. The race left me a bit cold though, soon as Nico disappeared at lights out it was a foregone conclusion the result and I found it all a bit dull. By halfway through I was bored rigid and starting wishing away the laps. Only saw it on SSF1, can’t say nothing overly critical of PDR, for someone who is usually dull he was ok in the comms box. Crofty….I just don’t know how I feel about him these days. When he was on BBC Radio 5 he was excellent, him and Ant Davidson were the hidden gems in F1 coverage, widely loved by the viewers. Now he’s on Sky I don’t know what’s happened, it’s all a bit too predictable and cliché ridden. He knows his stuff but you don’t hear that anymore. Maybe I was just jazzed after LM but Baku did nothing for me at all.

The Eurosport feed was set to the 3:1 view (main, pit lane and onboard).
What did you mean by this? You can only watch 1 Eurosport feed at a time in a single window, can you not?

My setup was the following on my living room PC - 2 Monitors: Main monitor showing the raw feed from Eurosport player, secondary monitor showing the Pitlane feed from Eurosport player. In another tab in the background, I had RLM commentary from their audio player (Synced with the clock by briefly watching the Studio-Vision feed on YouTube on my phone - surprisingly easy to do actually)

1) Start up Main feed on Eurosport Player
2) Watch Studio vision channel.
3) Sync using clocks on both.
4) Start up RLM Audio feed.
5) Pause audio feed (will always be ahead of Studio-vision channel) and resume when the Studio-Vision channel catches up. Close studio-vision channel.
6) Eurosport Player's main feed & the RLM Audio feed should now be in sync
7) Finally, start up the Pitlane feed on Eurosport player and sync that up with the main feed whenever the two show footage from the same angle.

All in all it took about 20-secs once you knew what you were doing.
I used the audio feed because (at least on Linux) the YouTube live player would randomly ignore any delay you'd put in and jump back again to live, if i tried to pause the stream.

This was my setup: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ClPWq-NWkAAhZSy.jpgrig If I'd had a 3rd monitor, I would have chanced my luck & put the Studio-vision channel on as well.

But the team knows (or should know) the rules even if the driver didn't. A bit of quicker thinking by them would have had them stop the car just before (instead of just after) the line and then wait for the chequered flag to come out and crawl past it. The win had already gone down solely to their own unreliability issue but they could have saved the podium position.

What I don't understand is that didn't the car then (after waiting for like 5 mins) go on to complete the rest of the lap at a normal speed? I'm guessing the 5 or 6 minute delay was the time it took to reboot the car, no?
How far behind was the Porsche when the Toyota slowed in the first place?

What i'm also confused is about is why that last-lap rule is there in the first place? I thought the old regulation of "you're classified if you cross the finish line after the victor has completed 24 hours, regardless of how far behind you are" had been removed years ago anyway, so why the requirement that you must finish your last lap in under 6 mins still?

The gap was about 34 seconds when the Toyota first hit the problem and the Porsche went on to complete another lap anyway,

Can I just say re Peugeot 2007 and the 6 minute rule, the end of that race was so wet that pretty much everyone was slower than the 6 minute limit on the last lap so force majeure was 'implemented', otherwise nobody would've been classified. On this occasion it was down to a technical issue, so they evidently felt that wasn't a reason for force majeure (maybe if someone had spun and in the process smashed into them and so they ended up crawling round they may see that as force majeure as it wasn't their fault, but technically for a mechanical failure you can't really call it force majeure.

I will say I felt genuinely sorry for them though losing the race like that, so close to the end. I have no great affinity towards a specific team but I admit I had my hands on the back of my head in shock watching it unfold. It really was an extraordinary finish to the race (it'd been a very close race anyway throughout even before that, not even sure there was ever a point where 1st and 2nd were separated by a full lap).

If you logged into Eurosport Player via a PC/laptop it came up with a 'Beta' player option when streaming the natural feed. You then had the choice to pic a main feed and then two additional inserts to sit on the right hand side of the screen. I only noticed it late on Saturday evening. Choices were

ES1
Natural Feed
Onboards
Pit Lane

There was a slight sync delay between the three (ie pitlane was always 1 sec behind) but it was a great way to cover a lot of views in one go. When you paused the main 'feed' it paused the side inserts too. At 14:20 I'd had enough misery and paused Eurosport Player and RLM (on YT). Went back to the laptop at 6pm and it fired off exactly where I paused it across all feeds. Not bad I thought.

Not quite true, the gap was about that before the Porsche had to make a stop with about 10mins to go which meant the gap went up to around 1min10 or so before Toyota had the problem.

Ahh I must have missed that, although its annoying if they're still not in sync - as they would be at the point of distribution from the circuit to the broadcasters.

Ah yes, forgot that. Wondered if they would have struggled on with the old tyres if they had been catching the Toyota slowly but surely? Only pitted when the gap was more or less static and decided to settle on second.

Not being that big an endurance fan, what is the rationale for the car to be (a) running at the end and (b) complete the final lap in less than 6 minutes?

One might (naively?) think that in an endurance race total number of laps completed in the available time would be sufficient, so if you had somehow racked up 20 laps more than anyone else with less than half an hour to go (purely for example) then it wouldn't matter if you sat having tea and scones in the garage for the remainder of the time because noon'es going to overhaul you, but obviously that's not the rule.

Is it just to provide "the champagne moment"? i.e. have the winner cross the finish line to chequered flag and general euphoria? Regardless, you have to say it's mighty impressive that after 23h 57 mins ish there was still only 30 seconds between the first two cars. That is cool.

Anyway in general I find Eurosport a difficult listen for LM24H. They've got some individual good commentators but a lot of people that make me want to throw stuff at the telly whilst they're yakking on. And as someone above said they make lots of mistakes, they're coming and going from ads in a haphazard way, they're talking whilst there's an interviewer talking whilst the team radio's talking...it's all a bit of a cacophany at times.

I can see the differentiation between technical break down and unavoidable weather conditions, it’s harsh but that’s the craic.

The 6 min rule was put in place to stop competitors who’d fallen out the race patching their cars up and crawling round at the end to gain a classification (which is even more important now it counts towards WEC). You used to get cars going out in say hour 6, being rebuilt or patched up, and then crawling round at the end to complete the final lap and gain a classification. Nowadays it's a mixture of a few things, you must of completed 70% of the leaders race distance, under 6 min final lap, and something about racing a large % of the final hour. Basically if you've kept running you've got nothing to be concerned about.

I think Toyota could’ve tried down the Force Majeure route and potentially won. The car was 4 laps ahead of the #6 Toyota and there was no way on Earth the #6 could’ve made good those 4 laps once the Porsche had crossed the finish line, at best at that point in the race the #6 could’ve made one lap back in the time it had left. I suppose it’s one of those rules which are perfect for 99% of the time, yesterday found that 1% exception.

At least we didn’t get to see them suffering on the podium. I was so so angry!!!!

Some impressive dedication from many here. Watching LeMans in the shower.

I watched maybe 6 hours worth, at a guess. I certainly wasn't staying up all night, and drifted in and out in the day time. I suspect I'm not the only one. 24 Minutes was a welcome summary of the key points of what had been happening, so maybe it's aimed at me. TK was a bit wooden, but I think Neil Cole does a good job, as he did last year, often let down by the disarray from the behind the scenes team as I said.

I struggle to watch the other WEC races admittedly, but Le Mans I can quite easily watch the whole thing. Weird.

The ban is right in principle, they were literally coaching drivers per-corner and telling them how to drive. However I'm not sure it should extend to engine settings, particularly with such complicated cars. Nico managed it though...
Not sure this has already been mentioned but Toto said roughly Lewis and Nico had the same issue but Lewis started the race in that mode and didn't immediately know how to fix it whereas Nico started in a different mode and only had the issue when he changed mode - so he was able to work out how to put the car back into the mode that didn't have the issue.
Don't really know why this wasn't mentioned by commentary until after the race - maybe we need Holly Samos back in the pit lane.

Because of working I recorded Le Mans on Sunday morning, and recorded BTCC all day intending to watch them today - which I did. I'm not really that bothered about finding out the Le Mans result as you could say I should have avoided the F1 but its easier avoiding the Le Mans result usually - no mention of it on tv news anywhere despite the drama. All the same thanks Crofty for telling me what happened.

Quite amused during Ted's qualy notebook having just before proclaimed he loves nazcar - when he bumped into Will Buxton and Jason Swales and referred to Kurt and Kyle Busch - none of the three of them knew whether Kurt and Kyle were brothers and suggested somebody might send in a tweet if they could say.
Thought one of them might know.
