I'd like to see new Top Gear do more features that the average road user would find relevant, i.e. picking out the most popular 1st time cars & comparing them to see on average what's the best value for money i.e. in terms of say driveability against fuel efficiency etc.
Have you seen the presenter line up? The show is obviously not going to do anything like that.

Isn't that exactly what C4's Driven did, scoring them out of 100 or whatever?

The idea might have been okay in theory but on TV It quickly became tediously dull and formulaic.
Was that not the Tiff Neddell and Vicki Butler fifth gear show, where they chose a car and all the presenters scored it out of ten and then it was added together.
Moved form C5 to Discovery/History. Still repeats on those channels a lot.

It did all get very dull, but then the Clarkson TG idea took off and replaced the boring hatchback compare idea...

What i'm saying is that it should be a balance between pre-2002 Top Gear & post-2002 Top Gear.

Instead of it being 0% relevance and 100% explosions, I want it to be a 50-50. Equally I don't also want it to be 100% relevance and 0% explosions, if you get what I mean.

I just want it to be a BIT less OTT all the time, and a tad more relevant. You can still do that while having fun, i.e. ragging it round a track or playing car football.

Post-2002 Top Gear was like: A Car review which basically summed up as "well ultimately despite the fact i've just reviewed it and said I love it in the VT, actually the car is a bit meh", Lots of offensive jokes followed by a Caravan exploding followed by a supercar race followed by an obviously choreographed challenge that bared no relevance to the vehicles involved whatsoever. It got stupid & predictable near the end. I want to see more variety & less controversy.

Post-2002 Top Gear's attempt at comparing hatchbacks ended up with them destroying a supermarket... Yeah cos that's relevant to real-world use isn't it....

No, I was thinking of Driven, who did it much earlier. Summary from Wikipedia:
"Driven was a motoring television programme launched by Channel 4 in 1998 as a rival to the successful and long-running BBC series Top Gear.

The style was similar to its rival, but with additional features such as the "Driven 100", a road test of three cars in the same class, where each car would be given marks for qualities such as practicality, desirability and cost of ownership. The car with the highest total score would be the winner. The programme launched with the concept that the presenters should interact with each other rather than present items on their own, as was then the case on Top Gear. The first series also featured a "headquarters", a racing team truck, set on a former air force base at which cars were put through their paces. These concepts resurfaced in the reborn Top Gear soon after.

Originally presented by Mike Brewer, James May and Jason Barlow, subsequent series also featured the rally driver Penny Mallory and the racing driver Jason Plato."

I just fear that times have moved on and I'm not sure how much of a cross-over there is audience-wise between those who want both 'cocking about' and serious car reviews, William Woollard style.

They can keep the blowing-up caravan features though, you can't have too many of those!

I found the first 4 or 5 years of post 2002 Topgear to be just about balanced. They'd have a few cheaper cars, few sports cars and 1 or maybe 2 of those challenge/race things a season. (which looked far less staged).

Past 6-7 years it's just fast cars and more OTT challenges every week. Not for me.

@FOMFan

It is is the escapism that made Top Gear so popular
Think deep down we all agree it got too risque at times
Although we all admit to not loving the reality world these days, something like Top Gear did throw in some fun away form all the pressures from life, that is all it is
Our modern world and press is all about reality and scandal, even F1 gets more pages when its off the track or a 'something' gate for the rags

Chris Evans and his merry men/women will from the BBC article today, be taking on the same merriment, perhaps toned down
Seven of them including a stig, thought the BBC was cutting costs, oh dear
Not seeing it as ever having the same spark as the previous Top Gear trio
Do hope they do not just follow the same format like a stig lap, not sure what, but run of the mill car reviews are not for me either

Wish the trio would hurry up on Amazon, excited for that return and credit card in hand for Amazon Prime sub

So, Erm, Formula 1 then.... that's a sport.

Seriously though, 6 presenters and a Stig, they won't feature everyone in every episode so I reckon Eddie is still free to appear at occasional Grand Prix if he wishes. He might not even have to be part of a presentation team, he could be interviewed for opinions the same way Mansell, Jackie Stewart or other guest drivers/owners would be.

Having Eddie Jordan sign up for Top Gear just after BBC drop F1. Oh the irony.

They could have had in depth F1 features, instead I have no idea what he'll do on there

I do.

Alan Carr and Davina McCall to host.
Julian Clary and Ru Paul in the pits.

John McCririck grid walk
Jo Brand and Jon Snow call the race.

Kirsty Allsop doing the technical analysis.

Are Channel 4 going to do anything original with their coverage?

F1 has a new home but some things just have to remain: we're chuffed to announce that The Chain by Fleetwood Mac will be our title music.

Well, was not expecting them to use that.
Not very original though, thought C4 said they were going to change things for their coverage.

Takes me back though, still have a 1978 BBC Theme tunes LP with that on it.
Fleetwood Mac is spelt wrong on the cover! It was Grand Prix then too, no F1

Really? You can't stand it? Each to their own, but personally I love it (but fair enough if you don't). I must admit I think it's an......interesting choice to stick with it, given that when you hear it, you instantly think "BBC F1". Not 100% certain I agree with the choice for that reason, but I do like the piece of music (and the song as a whole actually).

Yeah, I love a hell of a lot of music, but this track grates on me.

Fair enough, each to their own . Be a boring place if we all liked the same things wouldn't it?
