Fair point. I should have said "...for Sky".

Another great weekend of gp2/3 racing and commentary from Jacques.

Nice feature looking at safety over the years by Brundle on Sky.

The BTCC EPG listings on Freesat claim commentary was provided by Ben Edwards and Tom (sic) Harvey. Quite impressive to get it wrong on two counts

Am i the only one who thinks Ben Edwards was just appalling this weekend on race comms for C4?
So many mistakes, talking over radio, mumbling, stuttering....

Appalling would be strong. A few slip ups but overall still alright. C4 benefited from having Webber this weekend.
Looking at Sky Sports mix for next weekend, they'll show qualifying, the track parade and build up but NOT the race. Opting for the All Ireland Hurling final instead.

Just to add to above, just watched Sky highlights and there were a few incidents where David Croft called the wrong cars, the Ferraris in particular. So I wouldn't go preaching that Sky won this one.

BE had a poor first lap and struggled a bit with all the incidents, but recovered well after the first few laps I thought.

Speaking of which, how on earth could all of those incidents not even warrant a single steward investigation?

There were several examples of dangerous driving, in other races hardly anything has happened yet still one or two penalties have been dished out. Unless the penalty was automated, it was not going to happen today!

Did chuckle at FOM's mysterious "ray of light" replay of Vestappen on the start grid, bit of a change from the circle and magnify. Although the stewards ignored that as well.

I thought what Vettel did was absurd, guess he got away with it because it was his team mate.

That's because they were tendered for that time period.

You really are a bit special if you don't understand that. Usually you put out a tender and invite bids, clearly then you select who you want.

What we are led to believe is Sky got given this deal on the quiet after some private discussion. So no one else was even invited to take part in a proper tender ...but hey this is F1 and deals will be done as berine decides.

C4 didn't know about it, but BT did and I believe triggered the whole thing off.

Croft ID'ing top drawer terrible today. Totally woeful. Other times he just ooohh and ummed it until the graphic popped up.

Well we have never been told that. It was rumoured that BT were interested, so may have been having talks with Bernie, however then clearly so was Sky.

F1 has always done shady deals on rights packages and the teams for all their talk, never follow through with threats. If they did maybe the sport would still be fully FTA.

Yes - going right back to the ITV deal of 1995, when the Beeb found out via Ceefax that they'd lost the rights. We haven't had an open tender since then, with all the deals since then being rather unexpected to say the least, both in terms of timing and destination.

Not true, BT and F1 was just rumour
C4 were made aware of sky upcoming plans for full coverage from 2019 but not in the whole detail
C4 were only offered the BBC end of contract part, nothing more

I guess Bernie had a problem anyway, as f1 really wanted ITV back to take the sport, if the beeb wanted out. However, ITV probably used sense and valued the sport realistically, which is why it's meant to have taken so long to announce the c4 deal.

F1 is a very complicated owned business now, when you look at who/what owns it.
See sky news have reported on the bids for F1 now;
http://news.sky.com/story/liberty-me...acing-10551347

Looks like an interesting battle going forward for control.
With News International,Fox,Sky,Virgin,Liberty,Discovery links with the new bids looks like the end of FTA for F1 for the future.
Really think F1 with its worldwide reach would work very well going online as a subscription model. Be good in my view and offer a lot of extra live streams etc within the package and a lot of historical/archive stuff if that is ever made available.
Just think the current setup is stuck in the 1990s and could really do with some new broadcasting ideas and offerings.
F1 with a lot of of the background technical side and the extra live streams etc could be a much better catch or more appealing than it is now for the casual viewer if done better.
You only have to look within the UK, with the sky F1 red button and Sky sports iPad app and in the past the bbc online streams that are/were very popular for the F1 audience.

But surely something prompted Sky to spend £1bn on a six year deal? I guess they could have anticipated a threat from BT rather than there being a bid on the table, but James Allen reported they were bidding against each other.

Indeed, JA said there was a behind the scenes bidding war. It's very unusual for F1 rights to be decided 3 years ahead of time.

I haven't ever thought he's much cop as a live commentator to be honest.

He is OK with his voice-over work and "pretend" live commentaries such as what he does for the Porsche Supercup coverage but I don' think he's very good "in-the-moment".

Yeah, but it would look good for those trying to sell up. Don't forget CVC is the priority here

I would suspect that with a CVC sale being negotiated, a long term TV rights deal would add to the value. Wouldn't surprise me if rights Worldwide haven't been extended or at least negotiated.

BT Sport 3 showing Mexico WEC race this Saturday, considering they showed the German race last time I wonder if this is a deal until the end of the season?

Sorry I've been MIA for the last few months..Been REAL busy.
Anyhoo...
A couple observations.
1) I LOVE helicopter shots through the forest.
2) Bob Varsha was the lead on NBCSN on Sunday. I forgot just how good that team is with him. There were loads of commentator silence moments where we just got to hear the cars. Unlike that shouty Aussie who goes '#pantsonfire when the tiniest of things happen.

Of further interest to me was all 8 crew members on our tour bus watching those last 10 laps at Texas Motor Speedway on Sat. night. Group inhaling and group "Holy $hits" were flying like 'wait, whats?" on the internet.
