I'm pretty sure that Sky submitted a bid, BT submitted a higher one, then Sky submitted an even higher one & BT didn't go any further. As for BBC only finding out via Ceefax well that was 1995, the world has moved on. I find it amazing that in this modern world where everybody knows what's going on with each other in industries these days that Channel 4 were caught totally unaware, especially given that F1 paddock journos were hinting about it happnening anyway on Twitter.... I mean it's just common sense. I suspect FOM was fed up of broadcasters pulling out of deals early (ITV in 2008, BBC in 2015) & wanted to get future rights sown up more securely. FOM already have an existing relationship with Sky & so its natural that they'd want to continue that relationship, rather than start on a new one with a new broadcaster.

Again all this BT bid tal, never been confirmed. All we know is that the deal was done with Sky and well that is how F1 works these days.
The deal is done. We can't change that and well the sport will just have to live and die by such decisions. A lot can change in that time as of sky lose the football, well then f1 will be on a very lame package with hardly any interest at all. |

Certainly wasn't discussed amongst F1 journalists at Channel 4's media launch in March (I was there).

Because C4 knew diddly squat about the deal, but because we're saying naughty things about the 'beloved' FOM, we're all in the wrong..........
I just feel the way the 2019 deal was done, seems pretty standard to me in terms of international sports rights. Look at NBC's Olympics deal until 2032, you don't hear anything about a tendering period for that, NBC just extended their existing contract until 2032... |

The IOC tendered the rights to the 2014 & 2016 games in 2011 however broadcasters were encouraged to bid for future Olympics beyond 2016. It should go without saying that bidding 3 years in advance for biennial events of the Olympics' scale is not unusual. NBC were expected to give up the rights but having lost the Pac-12 rights to Fox & ESPN decided to go in hard to retain. Fox & ESPN also bid for Olympic rights (possibly with the aim of driving up the price) but ESPN lost out as they would only commit to 2014/2016 while Fox's bid was $1 billion below NBC's offer who are footing a $4.38 billion bill largely due to pressure from the opposing Fox/ESPN bids. So now NBC are locked into a massively overpriced contract they signed at a time when the media landscape was very different in order to fend off their rival broadcasters, all the while viewing figures are falling with millennials moving to new technology away from broadcast television. Swap Olympics for F1, Pac-12 for Champions League, NBC for Sky and Fox/ESPN for BT and this entire scenario might sound very familiar by 2024. |

I don't believe Sky would've wanted to sign the deal quite so early unless they knew they had genuine competition on the price front which realistically only BT could provide. FOM seem to have lost all interest in FTA and total audience figures. |

Can we presume that BBC radio will still have live coverage of all the sessions? Or is that being too presumptious?

I think that's a fair point from CVC/FOM's point of view, it's definitely good for them to have the guaranteed income - I just don't see the drive from Sky unless BT had waded in to the fight.

FOM seem to have lost all interest in FTA and total audience figures. For Channel 4 it was very naive of them not to ask about extending the contract before they signed it, especially given how short the part inherited from the BBC was. |

Don't forget that Sky isn't just the UK. Newscorp companies cover F1 in many markets around the World.

They will be covering F1 until 2023, they had their contract extended when the BBC dropped TV coverage.

All well and good there not being any live coverage of the Italian Grand Prix race on Mix but I would have thought they'd at least put on the highlights later. Makes driver parade and Pit lane live even more pointless.

FOM producing a world feed for the F1 All-stars v CL Legends match which all broadcasters are using if they are showing it, David Croft sounds like he is doing the world feed commentary as he did a 'Ladies And Gentleman' introduction before the start of the match plus the commentary is echoing which means it sounds like it's being used at the track.

Just a reminder that Joe Saward was reporting back in China that FOM would be introducing a drone-cam at Monza so thats something to look out for this weekend.
Bit of an odd choice for the Classic OnBoard feature this week, A rear facing shot from the 1st lap in 1990. http://www.formula1.com/en/video/201...onza_1990.html Would be nice if FOM looked at using rarer angles, Would love to see a full lap from the Helmet-Cam they had on Mark Blundell in 1994 for instance rather than the few seconds shown on Eurosport: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9WbAS1w0cc |
