Nice build up from Channel 4. I turned over from Sky when that sub-Youtube feature started with Ted doing a quiz whilst being driven round a circuit. Some nice angles of Coulthard driving that Red Bull, used more footage than Sky would have, guest appearance from Mika Hakkinen, and Eddie predicting Alonso to Renault...
Indeed, brilliant build-up and a great day of coverage with an in-depth interview with Jenson Button coming up. Totally knocked Sky's coverage in to a cocked hat, can you imagine the number of times the Barcelona footage would have been trailed, and how much more truncated it would have been when finally shown?

One quick correction - EJ didn't predict Alonso to Renault, other than to say that each year there are some surprises, and that would be a big surprise. He had Alonso partnering Vandoorne next year, with Button retiring.

For some reason I thought that was called Curva Grande...
According to Racingcircuits.info, it hasn't been called Curva Grande since 1999... then the renamed it when they changed the layout of the Rettifilio chicane for 2000.

Since 2000, "Variante Rettifillio" is now "Prima Variante", "Curva Grande" is now "Curva Biassono" and "Variante Della Roggia" is now "Seconda Variante"..

The sound mix for this GP2 race is really bad. Also, I'm not sure I approve of the use of the helicam as the drivers were going through the first chicane on the opening lap. Almost impossible to see anything through the trees.

It was a very odd obscured use of it.
Think they noticed as was not used again.
Did like the high camera following down the pit straight, thought it was going to hit the gantry but they pulled away.

That was a terrific GP2 race, apart form the safety car mess up.
Agree great commentary too, matching the all fired up action.

I remember when he joined in 2000, I was about 9 years old, and on seeing his name on the graphics, I was like "Button? What's that? That can't be a real name?" lol

Took me a fair few years of my childhood to take Frentzen's first name seriously...

Being a Trekkie, I kept thinking Damon Hill should look like a Ferengi.

(For the non-trekkies: The Ferengi rank of Captain is pronounced as "Day Mon".

Haha, I can totally imagine them trailing it for days before showing a load of slow footage of getting into the car, followed by the briefest of helicopter-based vanity shots of the driving itself, before cutting back to the pitlane bantz.

One quick correction - EJ didn't predict Alonso to Renault, other than to say that each year there are some surprises, and that would be a big surprise. He had Alonso partnering Vandoorne next year, with Button retiring.
Ah, thanks - I'd only heard them referring back to what Eddie had said, so go the wrong end of the stick.

Sky/C4 you know what to do! Get that bloody cheque book open...

Currently archiving my VHS tapes of the 1999 season (Murray and Martin commentating, at one point four contenders for the championship).

The cars look very wide (the commentators mention they have been made narrower), there is no Tyrrell but a variegated BAR, it's Damon's last season and Eddie Irvine is top UK driver followed by DC.

The 1998 McLaren team orders where Mika overtakes DC are roundly criticised - this was before New Ferrari!

One tape begins with the last sentence of a winter sports programme - "all too often, ski-ers underestimate the dangers of off-piste ski-ing with tragic results".

In terms of the coverage, it is quite a shock to see how the graphics have become trivialised with a mass of data and turned events into a cartoon with the "animated drivers on the grid" "turning" and "folding their arms".

There's perhaps the best modern-day commentary team, of course. But the best thing? No interruptions from unimportant team radio.

Is it the aspect ratio perhaps? Make sure it's in 4:3 and not being stretched to 16:9 widescreen.

IIRC they were made narrower to the current track of 1.8m in 1998, so they would definitely be the narrow cars in the 1999 season.

This was at the same time as bringing in the grooved "slicks" which Brundle commentated that Max and Bernie had been up all night cutting the grooves into them

We're going back to the 2m wide track for 2017 though.

When I started watchin in 1998, I thought the grooved tyres were normal, it was only later did I realise before that we had true slicks.

I hadn't even been thought of during his all too short F1 career, to be honest.

Yes, that was quite strange - Eddie had made his point (maybe a total joke as it made a great shot of him saying it whilst Alonso walked behind him next to the Renault motorhome) and later the presenters discussed it as if it was a real prediction. It may be that the late editing of the piece meant they only saw the final thing as it was played out & they were on the move.

That was a really funny qualy notebook from Ted.
Especially him sitting down in the village reading the papers.
Shows up his linguistic skills, loved he had got someone to write down the translation in his notebook and him sneakily looking at it.
I would have thought all his years in F1 he would have picked up some good language skills.
Non parlo molto bene italiano

Also, Ted mentioning that time-lapse video on youtube of Williams building their motorhome,
Would be great if Sky could do a long session of a team building or dismantling their kit at a race. Always love to see the snippets during his notebooks.
Would be great viewing and a good filler for the f1 channel after a race.

If Button is an "ambassador" next year and turning up to GPs, do we think he'll make any commentary appearances a la di Resta and others?

Sounds like Jenson is going down the Mika Hakkinen school of retirement - "oh, it's a sabbatical, might be back the year after, in the meantime look at this young guy Raikkonen who deserves a decent drive". Then just don't ever pop up again to say "nah, actually I won't be back after all".

So Bernie gone by Tuesday, wonder if the new owners will have a different philosophy to FTA TV. Obviously even if they did it wouldn't have an impact for several years in the UK

Another one of the Sky "Brundle drives an F1 car" VTs which gets the big buildup and then rattles through him actually driving the car in about one minute.

The proposed new CEO, Chase Carey is one of Murdoch's "closests lieutentants" and is currently a director of Sky. So no.

Mr Carey, who continues to serve on the board of Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox and is also a director of Sky plc, the owner of Sky News, is understood to have been in talks about the role in recent weeks.
http://news.sky.com/story/liberty-me...acing-10551347

Weirdly, Liberty's Media own sister company, Liberty Global was also mounting a rival bid, and so was NewsCorp (who Carey as i've said has the above relationship with) as well on their own.

Personally I think it's ****ed up that Murdoch can still get his hands on the sport (via this Chase Carey guy) even if his own company wasn't succesful in buying it. I wonder if this means that the new CEO will outsource world feed production to Sky, so FOM is effectively merged into Sky's production team? With Fox Sports in the US getting the rights after NBC expires... Maybe an apocalypitic scenario, but you never know...

According to Deiter Rencken here:
"I know the way Malone [Liberty owner] works, and there will be no sacred cows," said a source. "Liberty will look at every aspect, from broadcast deals to weekend format, with the teams likely to benefit the most.

"They'll look at it from an American perspective, which means NFL-type treatment of franchises [teams] and salary [cost] caps. All in it's very good news for us teams, so for the fans as well."
I mean if they don't make drastic changes to the sporting side, then that's fine, I can live with that, but come 2018 if suddenly Reverse Grids, random drivers or spec cars come into fruition as a result of these new owners then I would be seriously pissed off as IMO the DNA of the sport would be ruined. Also I personally don't like NewsCorp so i'm annoyed that they've got more fingers in the F1 pie so to speak as a result of this. But that's just me.
