Just catching up with F1 this weekend. Good to see Sky get so fed up with lack of showing cars actually on a hot lap during P2 they just cut to the onboard feed rather than world feed.

Quite clever of Channel 4 to play Bernie at his own game.
Bernie probably agreed to an interview with Ben Edwards at the time FP2 was on thinking that Ben had to commentate and would cancel the interview. Instead, as it isn't a live race weekend they left international viewers with Karun Chandok and Tony Dodgens and Ben did his interview and got some good stuff as DC noted.

Good Bundle interview with Bernie.
Bernie very positive about this new guy and setup.
Love some of Bernie's flippant comments, he just makes you laugh;

More rumours about the direction Liberty want to take F1 in:

Quote:
“ There are somethings coming out suggesting that the new owners are very keen on going in a more entertainment oriented route & would not be against using gimmicks such as 2-3 shorter races and reverse grids to create that entertainment.
Something I was told on Friday was that representatives of the new owners have already discussed using a success penalty system to prevent the same teams/drivers winning because they want more competition/unpredictability/different winners “at any cost”.

I’ve also been told to expect to start seeing F1 marketed as an ‘Entertainment franchise’ rather than a sport going forward which will be a big signal regarding the direction they want to take things.

With regards to online media, Live streaming of the world feed is unlikely due to existing broadcast contracts & there exclusivity clauses. However I have been told that streaming the additional content feeds (In-car cameras, pits, data, timing, tracking, rolling highlights) may be possible under existing deals & that discussions are going to be held with broadcasters to discuss FOM been able to produce & upload official highlight programs in the week after a race.”

Buxton is not there so James has a job.

Yes, I saw in the background on one of the sky interviews, he was in the pen wearing FOM-branded clothes, holding both a generic FOM F1 microphone, and an NBC one.

Won't they have to get that past the FIA, the World Motorsport Council and possibly the teams first?

Turning it into open-cockpit BTCC would be a sure way to rid themselves of most of the current fan base I expect, so I'd like to think they'll be a bit more considered in their approach.

Out of interest what's the source of that comment?

So the Driver of the Day vote now starts mid-way through the race and seems to end at the flag, wonder why they've changed that:

So any late race heroics are unlikely to be represented....

+1 for the CGI clock drinking game!

The Ex-FOM employee on F1 Fanatic. He keeps in touch with people in the paddock and is usually right about this sort of stuff. Interestingly the teams are against Liberty's idea to expand the season to 25 races, as they feel it's too much & most fans wouldn't watch all of them, & the don't want the calendar to end up like NASCAR where apparently most fans only watch half the season. I agree with that tbh, less is more in terms of F1.

Personally, one thing I'd like to see is the tyre rules greatly simplified. So pirelli brings 2 or 3 compounds to the race, and the same amount of each for each driver. That way everyone would start out more equal in terms of the amount of sets they've got to race with. Plus it's easier to understand.

It's driver of the day, not driver of the last 5mins...

I wonder who would have been Driver of the Day for Canada 2011?

Driver of the day should be null and void with this race going on right now.

I would have given it to Michael. Without a doubt the best race of his comeback.

Also means Channel 4 viewers get no say. On Eir, the C4 commentary team haven't mentioned Driver of the day. I wonder if C4 will try to hide the graphic.

I have to say, apart from that Kvyat/Versatppen battle in the middle, I thought the race was dull as heck...

Unfortunately that pretty much describes every race this season

There was lot of onboard and heli shot breakup today.
Also noticed some in the puts and during the driver walk to podium.

Really enjoyed the race today, seeming as its a long one agood lot of action and strategy.
As Brundle mentioned, buildings blocking action a few times and the cameras seemed to pull away too early at the start for the leaders because of the crash. I'm sure they could have had a better angle to capture the start.

Rachel mentioned to Vettel about driver of the day, he did not even know. He wanted a trophy.
Do not see the point of fans voting. It will just come down to driver preference mostly, not driver skill.
Be better if it was pundits and they gave the driver a few extra points, But probably not do it at all would be best. Hope this is not one of the new guys ideas. They will have Formula E fanboost next, ahhhh!

It's been in place since the beginning of 2016, so no. All they've done was just open the voting half-way through the race, and close it once the chequered flag fell, whereas before, they'd open the voting a few laps before the end and announce the result a few hours later.

I noticed that Sky described Chase Carey as the "Formula One Group Chairman" but is he actually the new chairman yet? Surely Liberty's deal isn't even complete for a few months yet....

Has it really, and we are half way through and a driver does not even know about it, haha! Not seen it mentioned before.
How can you vote half way through a race, that is daft!
Where is this vote listed then?

He is already chairman, it's not uncommon in takeovers for someone new to be put in charge in advance so they can get on with it without leaving the business in limbo until the sale is formally completed. If the deal falls through for any reason he'll be very swiftly out.

Driver of the day is on the F1 website and has popped up as a graphic and been mentioned by the commentators all season.

Considering how dull the race was Croft was still mixing up drivers when it was quite obvious, like Rosberg supposedly following Ricciardo into the pits despite never being behind him.
