FOM can't even get the onboard cameras in HD so what are the chances of new angles and making use of updates tech like thermal imaging on a regular basis!?

That may be happening for this year.

There was an article a few months back which looked inside FOM's trackside operations which mentioned an upgrade for this year that included HD OnBoards & the possibility of getting live feeds for every car. The bit that mentioned the OnBoards was later removed due to falling under the terms of a nondisclosure agreement the website had signed with FOM.

The bit that was removed:
“In 2015, every car is fitted with several SD cameras, with up to nine cars at any time each sending 2.5 to 3.5Gbps of footage back to the tech center via that cellular network. Even bigger things are in store for next year as the network is getting a speed bump up to 10Gbps and beyond. That way every car will be able to send HD footage simultaneously.”

I seem to remember the onboard footage of Sainz's crash in Russia was in HD, or at least upscaled SD, albeit there was a hell of a lot of picture breakup.

Of course it would be in upscaled SD.... All onboard footage since 2011 has been in upscaled SD, if you're watching an HD Broadcast.

Sainz' onboard footage was native HD.

Can anyone recommend a good F1 online forum to talk about the sport?

My brother tried to register on this site so he can just post in here, but DS won't activate his account because they think he already has an account for some reason.

As much as I enjoy watching the likes of Germany 2000 and Brazil 2003, hopefully we get a new batch of classic races from Sky this year.

Looks like studio episodes of The F1 Show might well be heading for the axe - no studio edition in Sky's provisional schedule for Friday 11th March.

It's interesting as well because the Sky Press release had no mention of off-week F1 Show's:

Quote:
“In addition to watching every session of qualifying, practice and race in the 2016 FIA Formula One World Championship™, viewers can enjoy live coverage of F1® feeder series GP2™ and GP3™. Race weekends will be supported by episodes of the F1® Show and rolling coverage on Sky Sports News HQ, and across digital and social platforms skysports.com/formula1 and @skysportsf1.”

Craig Scarborough and Mike Gascoyne will be guests for the Development Special show of F1 Report (Which is the new name for F1 Midweek Report)

Basically - F1 Show is binned to just race weekends with the magazine fluff stuff and basically the same content over all the Sky's at the circuit with any 'news' parts of the F1 show on the 'report' show every midweek.

I couldn't see the difference between that & upscaled tbh, but it may have been a trial of course.

I PM'd the Ex-FOM guy over at F1Fanatics asking about this a few days ago & he replied back that it was a native HD camera & that it was part of testing that FOM were doing towards the end of last year where a few cars were carrying the new HD OnBoards & that this is why we never saw any live footage from these cars.

They also confirmed something which i'd spotted at the time, That the camera pod on these cars was slightly different to the normal T-cam pod.

Here is the normal T-cam, It has the raised area in the center & a single fin/antenna towards the back:

The 'new' unit is flat & has 2 fins/antenna's down the center:

According to this person the reason the footage of Sainz crash wasn't shown live during FP3 was because these new cameras were not transmitting through the system that was available to the director at the circuit & was instead been sent back to biggin hill which is where the testing was been run. The footage wasn't sent to the director at the circuit until after the session & he played it into the broadcast just prior to the start of qualifying which is where the broadcasters like Sky picked it up.

The plan according to this person is for every car to carry one of the new cameras this year & that as-per the article I discussed in an earlier post the plan is to try & get live feeds from every car, Although they are currently unsure if this will be possible in reality & won't know for sure until Melbourne when they have the new cameras & new systems fully setup.

Are you sure? Sky are only saying he will be a regular pundit on the F1 Report, the first of which is on Wednesday 16th March.

He's badged on the website as Sky F1's Marc Priestley, which suggests some sort of contract.
