People complaining about the coverage produced by the 3rd party broadcasters (Sky, BBC, Channel 4) is stupid because why don't you just turn on the TV 5 mins before the race begins? That's what I do. I turn it off after the podium interviews as well, and just get my analysis from websites like Autosport.

So other people are stupid because they have their own opinions and would prefer not being told how to live their life by someone like you?

Given how much it costs to watch Sky's coverage and that I'm also paying for the non-world feed parts as well as their commentary on top of the world feed, I'm quite entitled to critique their approach.

"I do this, so everyone else must do the same and not criticise"

2017... New year, same Sh!t... you get the idea with that.

But even within that, there's plenty to give out about. Like having a lead commentator who can't identify the cars half the time, or a co commentator who keeps jumping in over his colleague, a pit lane reporter under used or overused and over opiniated, a paddock interviewer looking for a tabloid angle.

Are you refering to Ted? I have to say, he was on the Gareth Jones on Speed end-of-year/christmas podcast, and his opinions were absolute jingoistic trash, criticising Rosberg as being a bad racer because he's retired & not wanting to continue etc.... & saying he wasn't a worthy champion etc. What a ********.

Dakar 2017:

I didn't include UK bike rider Lyndon Poskitt #100 Team Places to Races, KTM450Rally - 2:1 SP Class. How did I find out? His on board video camera footage was shown in the first stage highlights.

It's Carlton Kirby narrating and translating as usual for Eurosport. The ASO Dakar graphics are more legible than last year's. Time penalties are often applied to competitors, as they were today, but the leader board TV graphics aren't updated so Carlton has to announce the correct standings.

As FOM fan failed to include a link to the GJOS Christmas podcast (#297), I've added it here: http://www.garethjones.tv/onspeed/onspeed297.html

There is the TT coverage which (weather permitting) has a fraction of the daily one hour highlights programme on the two days they race (on ITV4).

In other news, as it is pissing down outside with no sign of letting up I have cancelled my run for today and instead completed my 2017 motorsports calendar on outlook.com covering MotoGP, WSB, BSB, F1 and BTCC.

With the busy schedules there are about four weekends of heavy MotoGP / F1 clashes with little in the way of time difference to separate them.
To the hardcore BTCC and F1 fan, I've been disappointed in recent years about how they seem determined to race on the same weekend as each other.
Of the 10 BTCC weekends this year I think only Thruxton and 1 other were separate from F1
Even worse if you're out of the house missing both, expecting a DVR to record over 10 hours of Motorsport on one day then somehow finding the time to watch it all.....eeeesh
why aren't these people planning for my busy life when they schedule their races?

Still though, it does mean you have weekends where there's too much on to watch, then the next weekend is comparatively quiet with little to no racing on at all.
(WTCC and WEC also seemingly like trying to clash as much as possible too, for some reason)

It may have been "Even year'd big football tournament syndrome", but I doubt it.

Anyone know how many times BTCC and F1 clash this year?

I am new and always watch the Sky coverage on race weekends.

Anyone think that come 2019, Sky will start evolving their pundits with Mark Webber, Fernando Alonso, JB available? DC could join the Sky commentary team because I enjoyed his partnership with Brundle in 2011.
.
Lets hope coulthard gets left out in the cold.
I've minimised my Sky viewing to as little as possible this year as I've just had my fill of their biased tabloid lowest common denominator nonsense (and i'm supposed to pay for this....eeesh) but I do miss the insight of Brundle
With coulthard all you get is insipid shallow analysis somehow always managing to turn it back on himself, all the while managing to interrupt Ben Edwards, someone who you actually want to hear the opinions of, while he's in full "Bengasm" mode of high excitement.

Jenson, however, has been proven to be a good co-commentator and pundit already, I'm surprised there's not already a bidding war over his services for 2017.
From his point of view it might make more sense to take the presumably less amount C4 will offer for a couple of seasons with more eyes on his analysis than just get lost in punditville and be one of many voices Sky tell to say Lewis is the greatest in different ways race after race.

TBH I usually treat BTCC and BSB/WSB as midweek afters on catch-up after following MotoGP and / or F1 at the weekend.

I wish I had that impetus tbh

For me if a race isn't live, it loses that x factor.
Knowing you can either fast forward or just look up the result takes a large part of the lure out of it for me.

I ended up watching Brazil this year at about 1am when I finally got in, but it just wasn't the same (even if it was still on balance one of my favourite races of the season, I just know it would've been even more special to watch live and react to it with my fellow F1 fans)

Will Jenson have the time for much TV work this year?

He's rumoured to be doing Japanese Super GT, Global Rallycross, triathlons, and he's still contracted to McLaren, so he'll probably be in the simulator. There's also all the sponsor event stuff.

Think it was Constanduros who said when F1 is on, viewing figures of other formulae go up.

Five clashes of date, but that includes the Canadian and Malaysian Grands Prix which are in different time zones with no overlap.

You realise that even if you think you are watching it live you are actually several seconds behind live? Once you accept that then it matters not if you are several seconds, several minutes or several hours behind.

Also Jenson has said that he doesn't think he will be travelling too many GPs this season, so apart from the odd appearance the TV companies will probably leave him until 2018

I disagree gomezz. If it's not live, it's jive.
(Seconds notwithstanding).

I will stay with Enstein on this one: Time is relative. Time passes more quickly the faster you go so the cars will always get to the end in a shorter time than it takes for you to watch the race.

However...I have fast forward on my VCR.
