Wonder if we're all assuming Allen will be a commentator but he may have a slightly different role as a presenter or pit lane reporter. Plus he hasn't traveled to all of the races in a season for quite some time and there are 21 this year.

The one I'm watching has all the noise on the right channel. So if you turn your balance left it's fine.

Surely they're going to need a second 'proper' commentator available anyway (as opposed to the Coulthard analyst comm box role)? Ben Edwards never did FP2 for example, James did. Would C4 have him do all of FP1, FP2, FP3, Qually and Race when the BBC didn't? They'll need a back-up in case the main commentator is ill or unable to do it for whatever reason. The BBC had the advantage of having the Radio 5 team to call upon, if necessary. C4 doesn't have that.

That is assuming that Coulthard is going to be a commentator at C4F1... so far all that has been announced is he's part of the team, isn't it? He could be presenter/pundit with Ben and/or JA on comms .. or all three on comms maybe

True. Not really sure I can see DC giving up the comm box role myself but you never know. They still need more than just one of Ben or James, though, surely? But yes, I agree, C4 may well want to mix things up a bit.

Very good points made in the last few posts. Perhaps them having Ben as the main commentator, then having JA on the team to be a secondary commentator for some sessions, do 'Ted stuff' and be a secondary presenter (as DMN revealed that there will be two presentation teams) and reporter. I'd agree that I'd be surprised if Ben E doesn't make the move to C4. He's universally regarded as the best in the business when it comes to motorsport commentary, and he clearly got on very well with DC over the last four seasons. You'd think that DC would be fighting tooth-and-nail to persuade BE to move over, as there aren't exactly a large number of top-level motorsport commentators, which is evidenced by the fact that the incumbent a decade ago (James Allen) who was considered at the time to be not-very-good (although he has since found his niche and is clearly an excellent journalist) is still considered to be a very viable option.

Could they even have three guys up there like the Americans do?

He was doing pitlane for Aussie tv until recently. Maybe just doing the same for C4, unless he is sharing comms duty with Ben.

Another change to qualifying. Hope FOM are prepared for all this.

So basically it's the same as before, except Q3 is now the same format as it has been in previous years? That's hardly a massive change IMO.

He's still doing it, including at the Barcelona test which is one the reasons that's makes me think he may not be the main commentator.

How about they just do what it seems a vast majority of people want them to do & leave qualifying as it was?

I just hope this format blows up in there face & that by half season this dumb elimination system is lying in the FOM vault next to double points!

How is this different to the current elimination system? Instead of 5 drivers getting eliminated at the end of 15 minutes, they're just getting eliminated one-by-one...

TV3 (which is FTA) has now extended its rights in Spain:

- Spanish GP - live
- All other races - 60 min delay

(Telefonica has all races live on Pay TV).

Sky really trying to pull in the viewers here, EVERY Session of the AUS GP is simulcasting on Sky Sports 1:

https://twitter.com/f1broadcasting/s...76108799156224

I can't be surprised by this, first of all the times are placed in Sky's 'dead space' so Sky will obviously want to fill that dead space with live sporting action.

Secondly Sky want the viewers, I'm surprised that they aren't Simulcasting on Sky1 considering that received a fair few simulcasts a couple of years ago but I've seen a hell load of promotion on SSN HQ already, I'm surprised that they are not promoting the fact the race is also shown on Sky Sports 1, all that is showing is 'Live Only On Sky Sports F1'.

I would not be surprised however to see over half the season simulcasted on Sky Sports 1 to get the viewers in.

Bahrain, Russia, Spain, Belgain, Italy, Singapore, Brazil and Abu Dhabi will probably not be subject to a simulcast (unless Sky change their minds on Simulcasting on Sky1) due to PL clashes however I expect others to be simulcasted to fill the schedule. Including the above I expect 13 races this year to (possibly) be simulcasted on Sky Sports 1.

And no.. I've said this before and I'm going to say this again but I do not think that simulcasting will kill the F1 channel, I think the simulcasts will be for filling gaps in the schedules and chasing ratings.

Enough said...

EDIT: Reading by this tweet, the Edwards/DC partnership looks to continue thanks to tweet which also confirms South Africa taking C4 commentary:

Yes simulcast seems fairly sensible; using otherwise "dead" air time and putting it on the first sports channel people will hit in that section of the EPG can't hurt the figures. More likely to get the channel surfing casuals who were watching Sky Sports News and start surfing the sports section.

I wonder if Sky will simulcast a race in a way to dent C4's ratings for live races, I could see that happen at a couple of races, Sky1 could be a way to dent the C4 live ratings as that's avalible for non-sports subscribers, or perhaps simulcast a race which C4 show live on Sky Sports 1 and Sky1 at the same time.

The quali story is just plain funny. I love it.

I like to think that in the ultra-intense, money-flush world of aerodynamics boffins, high-precision engineering and pin-perfect drivers they're now trying to present some sort of human side to the sport - incompetent, indecisive, flip-flopping backwards and forwards between decisions made by faceless committess who have (apparently) no idea what they're doing and how they are directly contradicting other faceless committees. It's like being at work!!!

Ted apologising for the sound yesterday. I thought the sound was iffy at a couple of points on Craig Slater's testing report today as well, though not to the same extent as Ted's notebook yesterday.

So Charles Sale has chimed in, with his belief that it's Steve Jones for the Channel 4 presenting job, shared with David Coulthard

Having seen the 'Halo' on the Ferrari at testing this morning, it could provide some good camera locations - the Drivers view would be closer than we have ever had before.

WRC Rally Mexico/Clipsal 500/NSCS Vegas

This weekend see's a triple-header of motorsport madness as the WRC heads to Mexico, NASCAR going to Vegas for the first round of the #NASCAR#GoesWest series and the return of the V8 Supercars for the Clipsal 500.

As usual all of these events are on TV with the WRC event spread across 3 channels, aka BT Sport, Channel 5 and Motors TV. The later should hopefully be back soon on the Sky EPG however until it comes back then casual viewers of WRC will probably head for the 52 minute rally highlights on Channel 5. Due to the time difference, the first highlights showing will be at 9am in the morning so this may be one of the lower rated rallies this year.

Another thing I noticed and readers will find this interesting is that it appears Motors TV will not be showing V8 Supercars this year, normally Motors would show most races as-live in the afternoon however the schedules show no V8 Supercars at all, (not even highlights) so it looks like BT Sport has exclusive rights to the series this year which means another series off FTA TV.

Still, there is a hell load of action and the positive out of this is that all the live WRC Stages and V8 Supercars is on BT Sport 1 which means all live action is available to BT Lite customers, Below is the schedule you need for the racing action this weekend:

WRC Rally Mexico:

BT Sport:
03/03/16: WRC Mexico Stage 1: 2:00am-3:00am (BT Sport 1)
05/03/16: WRC Mexico Day 1 Highlights: 1:00pm-1:30pm (BT Sport 2)
05/03/16: WRC Mexico Stage 14: 8:00pm-9:00pm (BT Sport 1)
06/03/16: WRC Mexico Day 2 Highlights: 1:30pm-2:00pm (BT Sport 1)
06/03/16: WRC Mexico Stage 21: 6:00pm-7:00pm (BT Sport 1)
07/03/16: WRC Mexico Day 3 Highlights: 11:00am-11:30am (BT Sport 2)

Motors TV: (All Shows 9:00am)
05/03/16: WRC Mexico Day 1 Highlights
06/03/16: WRC Mexico Day 2 Highlights
07/03/16: WRC Mexico Day 3 Highlights

Channel 5:
07/03/16: WRC Mexico Highlights: 7:00pm-8:00pm

V8 Supercars Clipsal 500: (All BT Sport 1)
05/03/16: Clipsal 500 Race 1: 3:00am-4:30am
05/03/16: Clipsal 500 Race 2: 5:30am-7:00am
06/03/16: Clipsal 500 Race 3: 4:30am-7:00am

NSCS Las Vegas:
06/03/16: NSCS Kobalt 400: 8:00pm-12:00am (Premier Sports)

If any of the schedules change I will update the above

Another thing I want to mention is the BT Sport 'Mad About Motorsport' advert. As you see here it mentions all the motorsports that BT Sport have rights this year and the ad has caught my attention for weird reasons.

It mentions WRC, MotoGP, Indycar, DTM and V8 Supercars as you expect however it also mentions WEC, ELMS, British F4, British GT Championship and NASCAR Whelen Euro Series. Now you would not mention a motorsport in an advert without having some sort of rights to it so it makes me wonder if Motors TV has lost the rights to above in my second sentence. If that's true than that's a huge amounts of rights lost for Motors, this must involve money issues otherwise Motors wouldn't lose all these rights, it also means that another bunch of sports go off FTA TV and maybe the start of the death of Motors TV.

With BT gaining rights to the British Rally Championship and British Rallycross it's safe to say that BT is now the new home of Motorsports. Maybe we will be getting our money out for a new motorsports soon.
