The Youtube stream (Which includes Practice/Qualifying & the race) usually goes OnDemand once the live coverage ends, Unless its Geo-blocked (Which this weekend it won't be). Interestingly the last 2 races were not Geo-Blocked in the UK either:

They also put up 50 minute highlight packages on Youtube a few days after the race & I believe they are available worldwide.”

The full race was definitely not available a few days after the broadcast last time, so I had to resort to such methods.

Nice to read DC being complimentary about Ben Edwards in Jon Noble's Motorsport.com piece. Their interaction is very professional but occasionally seemed to lack a bit of warmth. Hopefully being on C4 rather than Auntie will allow Ben to return to a slightly more freewheeling Eurosport style and inject a bit more personality (I speak as a fan of the Jeremy Shaw days).

Would be interested to hear from jdn123 whether there are any constraints imposed when you're providing world feed commentary. Are you advised to shy away from idiomatic expressions or cricketing analogies to make sure international viewers can follow? (I work as an interpreter and we constantly have to adjust our use of English to who is in the room/audience while acknowledging that many Latvians/Swedes speak better English than your average man on the street.)

Re C4 practice coverage - I noticed the F1 trailer following Mobil 1 The Grid this morning stated Australian F1 begins Saturday 19th March...

C4 are only showing highlights of that race anyway.

BBC commentary on practise sessions are on R5SX which suits me as I can record those to listen to later at work and watch the MotoGP practise instead while at home.

Re: Frank Furt comments about no warmth between Coulthard and Edwards, I have to say I find that they work better as a team than Croft and Brundle do. If anything Croft seems to bounce off Kravitz better than he does Brundle. Take race starts for instance. If DC spots something major in the start he's straight in ("Raikkonen stalls, Hamilton slow"etc) Brundle seems to wait for Croft to take a breath before saying what he saw.
Ben Edwards is in my opinion the best commentator in Motor sport at the minute and I really hope Setanta here in Ireland are using Channel 4 for their World feed commentary.

Have they been advertising it much? I don't really watch the ITV channels much to see if they have.

From what I've seen, no, not at all this season.

Surely that's just Brundle being professional, not interrupting the lead commentator at the most eventful part of the race.

Ok I'll concede I made a bad point. But there is still something about Croft that makes me feel he's not as good as Edwards. Perhaps it's just down Edwards having more experience but Croft comes across a bit too tabloid if that makes any sense.

Pinkham has tweeted that Sky Sports are merging F1 Show and Midweek Report into a show called F1 Report and that it's on tonight.”

Not really bothered the f1 show for non race weekends has been lost.
It really did lose the plot the last few years and especially the audience concept. Seen that on other sports and its just as dull there too.
Do like the sitting on the high chairs near the pitlane on race weekends f1 shows, with Ted, Rachel, Croft, Simon, Brundle and Damon, they were enjoyable.
That show last night was pretty poor. Loved all those people passing by in the background, off to the canteen or a comfort break, much more interesting than the show.

I think when you work for Rupert Murdoch you become very tabloid.

I always use Youtube as the quality is great & it tends to work perfectly, although I'd suspect Dailymotion would be just as good.

The formulae.com stream works fine but the quality isn't quite as good because it's not available in true HD (Main feed is 960x540 & the OnBoards are only 640x360).

Quali changes ratified from Melbourne onwards - I've made a comparison between the 2015 & 2016 formats:

Thanks for making that so clear, a lot clearer than it has sometimes been reported to be. Initially I hated the idea of changing Qualifying as I didn't see that as being part of the problem but think the aspect of jeopardy may well make it a bit more exciting-who will be the first to make a tactical balls up in Melbourne then?

On a less trivial note, how does the format change if a car goes off in the early stages of a session? Is the time that elimination starts just delayed for another 90 secs or is the session cut short at the end etc?

Also worth considering that this format may be much harder to put into highlights form and I imagine the highlights on C4 will now essentially consist of the stage once the elimination has begun/is about to begin and show this in it's entirety, without edits. Hence there will be large chunks at the beginning of qualifying that are missing which isn't too bad but may cause a few issues if there incidents at the beginning of the qualifying session and the edits might have to be quite harsh and not as fluid as before.

I don't think any of us know that, at the moment. I would assume it to be your first theory, though.

I really will be amazed if we get though the qualifying session next weekend without any graphics and/or live timing problems. Could be a bit of a disaster.

Thanks stefmeister, youtube it is then!

On qualifying...stop lengthening Q3, it makes it even more anticlimactic! Apart from maybe Spa it didn't need lengthened the last time, so further lengthening with fewer cars is just going to be duller unless they are throwing much more tyres at them.

On the graphics...they should have a practice run in FP2 or something on the graphics/timing side at least.

At least C4 are trying to stop us getting bored while waiting for the season to start:

Really bad video. Not sure why they've clearly told Jones to act all cocky like that. Presumably that's just a small snippet, it looks like there's a bit more to it.

It's hilarious isn't it? We're about a week away from the first on track action of the season and no one has the clearest idea what qualifying is going to really look like. Only in Formula 1.

And yeah broadcasting disasters are even more likely than tactical screw ups by the teams, should be entertaining: even if it's not for the reason that they hoped it would!

According to the Daily Mail he's

Quote:
“a keen follower of motor racing...”

According to Channel4.com he's

Quote:
“a lifetime F1 fan”

According to Autosport

Quote:
“He himself admits to having only "dipped in and out" of the sport...spent six weeks watching every single qualifying session and race from last season. He even watched some twice.”

- presumably prep or flat-out "cramming" for the season to come.

I suppose all three could be true in some weird convoluted way, although more likely it's Autosport are closer to the money and the C4 press release was just the usual PR guff that the Daily Mail lapped up - though maybe I'm entirely wrong there.

I'm not prejudging the guy himself - it's just interesting to see the different slants the different sources put on it. Noone wants to come out and go "yes, we wanted to hire some ex-BBC folk, but we also want to put our own guys in some of the positions, and funnily enough we don't have that many live sports presenters and this guy appeals to the youths yadda yadda yadda".

I know Twitter's not exactly the answer to everything, but the fact he's only very recently started following any kind of F1-related accounts says to me that he's not much of a huge fan. He's only just started following Hamilton, and surely he's the one driver you'd expect any 'casual' fan to follow.

Credit where it's due though, he's clearly busy studying...

I've never seen Chatty Man before.... It's only been 5 mins and I don't think I can stand any more. I'll watch on catch up and FF until the F1 bit.
