I don't know, But i've heard that FOM want to put at least the extra interactive feeds on the F1 Access portal for live streaming (World feed still locked to broadcasters), now that's kinda pointless if Sky's online streaming is 30secs behind live yet C4 is 20secs behind live. Having a unified backend across all broadcasters would ensure that each person is getting the same quality & sync with their streams. I mentioned "standardisation" because the article said that instead of Broadcasters serving the streams themselves, some (the 23) were already just tapping into tata's network and letting them do all that, as far as the F1 feeds are concerned.

The delays are more to do with the unreliability of local internet delivery and not how you get the signal back from say Melbourne to London. I think you're confusing the two: standardising the way broadcasters get their streams from FOM isn't the same as standardising the way consumers get their streams from the broadcasters. If Sky online has a 30 second delay it'll still have a 30 second delay, and it doesn't seem likely that Tata/FOM would come in and upgrade Sky's system for them.

Which is why I think this is talking about an FOM subscription service where they're running both the broadcast and all the additional services and can then try to keep them reasonably in sync.

But I guess we'll see.

Yes, but whether the streaming player is hosted on Sky's website or the BBC's, the streams that that player uses could still all come from a central server (say FOM's)... Rather that what's happening now, where by

Sky: Get feed from FOM -> send Feed to Sky's servers & encode for playback -> Push out on Sky's website.

BBC: Get feed from FOM -> Send Feed to BBC's Servers & encode for playback -> Push out on BBC's website.

vs:

FOM: Send feed to own servers & encode for playback -> Push out on all broadcaster's websites.

You've removed 1 link in the chain, making it cheaper & more efficient for broadcasters to serve to their users.

Though surely each broadcaster would want to have their own logo, and possibly mix in other content (hopefully not ads).

I can't see why FOM/Tata would want to invest in improving Sky's/BBC's/C4's delivery system for them. It seems far more likely they'd want to create their own for their own brand. From your example above it's pretty obvious FOM doesn't need the broadcaster at all.

It's only some proofs of concept at the moment, so we'll have to see what it translates to. Moving from satellite to cable as a way of getting the signal back to the broadcaster will be invisible to the consumer, but probably reduce costs significantly and if that helps bring about 4K that's good too. I'd bet we will have an F1 subscription service with F1 apps for other devices and then with everything integrated the synchronisation issues can be addressed. Sounds good to me.

Channel 4 look to be doing just fine commercially out of this arrangement so far- bodes well for after 2018.

Those things (logo's, UI, ads etc.) can all be tailored to a specific broadcaster pretty easily, with the core backend streams still being the same across all versions. And you're right in that FOM technically doesn't need the broadcaster, but because Bernie is still adamant that involving the broadcaster is the way to go, it's an option that still allows them to keep the broadcaster on-side, while still being able to deploy it on their own site should they want to.

Does that video look in sync to you? It's weird, some bits (like the tyres squealing as the car moves off from the grid) sound in sync, yet others (rev counter before the start, and the gear-shifts) seem really out :/ There are times when I hear down & upshifts when his hand is nowhere near the shifter (unless he's got a 2nd one on the other side that he's using with his left hand).

Yeah the audio isn't in sync.

The audio was probably poor over the 1st lap for some reason so they have tried (Badly) to sync in bits from other laps. Given how there are many other laps through that weekend including a few that were shown on the world-feed its weird how they decided to use one that had dodgy audio syncing.


Still I hope dipping into the OnBoard archive is something FOM are going to do a bit more of.

Yeah, they've said that it's the first in a new series, so I suspect we will see one for each Grand Prix wherever possible.

I wonder if this is so C4 can use these as VTs as part of the race show, rather than having to make their own? David has never 'hosted' a FOM/F1 Access video before, he's only been a guest/been interviewed in a couple before.

Also confirms that we are not getting new world feed graphics this year.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that they take the cars back to 80's levels, but that one lap looked so much more exciting than anything we see these days. The drivers head bobbing around showing how bumpy the ride is and he physical the whole thing is, the drivers hand coming off the wheel to change gear (yes, I know we wouldn't see that now) but that's why F1 is losing viewers these days, it makes everything look like a Sunday morning drive to church

Stop super-stabilising the images would be the most important part, mount the camera lower down for better perception of speed, and possibly find a better placement for the microphone for engine noise.

Think I know why the audio is out of sync on the Dumfries OnBoard, I think there using audio from the wrong car. Patrick Tambay also had an OnBoard camera that weekend & he was the next car behind Dumfries over the opening lap & the engine sounds more like Ford Tambay was running than the Renault in Dumfries Lotus.
