I can understand it not being exciting (it now makes beginning/middle more exciting rather than the end of each session), but as for Damon & Johnny not being able to*understand* how the elimination works? Come on, it's not that different a change. One thing I'd alter is to allow drivers to finish the lap they're on when their 90secs is up. And find some way to ensure as much cars are on the track as possible, cos when teams like Ferrari & Williams in Q1 (And rosberg too, why didn't he go for another 2 laps with 4mins remaining)?) give up & return to the pits, it just ruins it. Of course the tyres' tiny operating window doesn't help. I'd maybe suggest that a min fuel amount was enforced throughout quali, and cars must start on the most durable tyre. That might ensure that more cars are on track.

It's only exciting when all the cars are on track, and if they ain't, it doesn't work. Hypocritical that the team bosses who unanimously (I believe) voted in the change are now saying it's rubbish.
You can't have a 90 second knockout format and then say we need to ensure as much cars are on track as they are getting picked off, that is the point of it! You can't really have them finishing a lap beyond their 90 secs as they could start in the final second and finish their lap at basically the next drivers count out point.

Haha Toto just called the qualyfying 'Rubbish' and it needs to change.
Christian Horner just said much the same and apologised to the fans.
Those 2 voted in the change a few weeks ago! Hypocrites. No one on TV has the balls to say that to them, pisses me off.

Why can't we have that?

Can't help but think that F1 will be too embarrassed to immediately revert back to the previous format for Bahrain. They'll probably come up with something else. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing the return of one-shot qualifying.

And just to keep this post on-topic, I have to say that the railcam in the paddock is utterly, completely pointless.

They're thinking of having Q3 only in the previous all-eliminated-at-end format. (Which I personally never liked cos then only the last 2 mins were relevant cos only then would you see drivers put in their best laps), and yeah the paddock cam thing is useless lol

They should go back to last season's format for Q1 and Q2, knocking out 7 in each, then do single lap qualifying for the last 8 if they want more mild peril for the leading drivers.

As this is the Broadcasting Forum, I wonder what thoughts are re Channel 4's first programme, aiming to entice new viewers, being this qualifying session?
Hardly a good 'show' and I bet they are as negative in their post Quali narrative as Sky (and us on here).

The stands emptied before the session ended. Says it all really. Unless you are opposite a big screen you have no chance of following the action with who's in and out.

Nice of Sky to use the pit lane channel throughout Q3 I thought.

quite frankly c4 should not show todays quali, they could say there was a technical problem. i don't recall any of the on track action, all the focus was that damn timer and drivers in the garage. i've watched f1 for 10 years and there have been farcical scenes but this has been the worst i've ever seen.

Yeah, why don't they just lie to the viewers on their very first day of covering the sport.

Decided to watch a classic qualy session, remember the three way tie on ITV, to take away the disappointment.

It just highlights how f1 is now at rock bottom in all aspects. new fans will not tune back after seing quali for the 1st time.

In one way it's great for Channel 4, it edits itself into a highlights package very neatly just by hacking away the second half of each segment to remove the empty track portions. They can probably fit the whole thing (all that's worth watching anyway) into 20 minutes.

I was like with Brundle. End of Q1 it was mildly enjoyable when a clock kicked in then became kinda fed up with what was going. Mix of penalising drivers with a semi-single lap quali format with early 2006 quali with the counter going 0 was like the flag going out in 2006 and you couldn't finish the lap.

I would agree with Brundle that the new quali would be a bit more random on bad weather Saturday's however thats about it.

Old format please.
Yep, talk about the law of unintended consequences!

If they hadn't decided to push this through with 3 weeks to go, maybe they could have simulated it and proved this is what was going to happen. (Quite apart from the fact many of the fans had figured out this was what was going to happen as soon as they saw the plans...)

Too much clock-watching and a crippled and anti-climactic Q2 and Q3. This sport is so daft sometimes!

What made it worse for the fans at the track, is that while us TV viewers had a working 90sec countdown clock on the tower for for the driver next-in-line for elimination, the big screens at the track didn't even have a tower apparently, as it was glitching out far more for them.

I feel sorry for Channel 4 that this is the first qualifying session they'll have to explain for new viewers, but perhaps they dodged a bullet by having this as a highlights race and can snip some of the more insane bits out of qualifying.

Ah, actually... now there's a thought - I bet this elimination format could now make qualifying pretty difficult to edit down and still have any sense of continuity as the timing tower and countdown will jump all over the place.

Can we just forget this ever happened, eliminate this version (see what I did there ), and go back to the previous format?

Did make me laugh when Croft answered a quib from Brundle about how would the Silverstone crowd know what was going on.
Croft said they could use sky go.
Haha, try syncing that with the live action in front of you then!

It's turning into a weird hybrid of old Q1/Q2/Q3 quali for the first third of each individual session except more frantic, almost single lap quali the second third of the session and dead air for the last third.

The teams seem a bit slow to realise they need to be looking 2 or 3 eliminations down the road, not the current one, but in a way it's moot as the turnaround time is too great and they've used the tyres anyway.

It reminds me of when the Q1/Q2/Q3 format was originally introduced it ran to the clock at the end of the session. So teams kept sending the cars out too late to get their lap in. They ended up changing it to make it the end of the lap you were on. This is like that for each individual elimination.

Needs more refinement
Thing is that wouldn't work with this new system due to the longer tracks, if they allowed cars to finish their lap at Spa with a longer than 90 second lap, The clock would count through 2 eliminations with some cars still capable of escaping the first one, if that make sense

At the very least they should change the elimination window to every 2 minutes and keep more cars back for Q3. Easier to follow when they will occur, why they lengthened Q3 with less cars I have no idea.

The biggest problem though is under the old system the faster cars could get through Q1 with hard tyres so that helped the action in Q2 and Q3. Now there is such a traffic jam and rush at the start of Q1, that is the only interesting part.

If it's this bad without any red or yellow flag interruptions just imagine the even worse mess when that happens!

The system doesn't work for one very simple reason. You can be 5 places above the dropout space and have loads of time to get out and do a lap. if you suddenly drop to last, you don't have any time to respond. It's silly.

I quite liked the feel of one lap shootout in Q1 though. I'd return to last year's format, but I'd tweak Q1 so that you are only allowed one flying lap.

Yes and the way it's displayed, the graphics gave the impression it's the driver highlighted that's under the countdown, which is true at that moment but as you say it's actually the place that's under the countdown and the driver just happens to be in that place at the moment.

I think a red line or something between positions would be better, and just move that up each time and have the clock aligned with that - it would convey the meaning a bit better.

But hopefully this is just an academic discussion, given the format is so obviously broken.

Well, well, well... That was -um- interesting.

Firstly I'll start with the Qualifying format as it's all people seem to be talking about today and understandably so. It doesn't work. The major problem with it is that it's back to front; the drama is at the beginning of each session as well as Q1 being infinitely more exciting than Q3. And despite the relative excitement of Q1 it still ended up being Noah's Ark throughout most of the grid! Two-by-two doesn't normally tend to lead to the most exciting races and this format gave us exactly what it was meant to stop and did so being incredibly anti-climactic at the same time. I imagine this will be abolished or at least heavily tweaked by the time we get to Bahrain. 1 qualifying session like that is entertaining: it creates controversy, talking points etc. 2 Quali sessions like that and Formula 1 starts looking like a bunch of idiots.

Many people are saying this is an awful way for C4 to start their coverage. I have to disagree. The track action today can be edited very easily for highlights- something that must alleviate a real fear given how the new system could have made it very difficult to edit. Also today lots of people are talking about F1. It's still trending on Twitter and people are talking about it and that may encourage people to tune in and see what all the noise was about. It also gives Mark Webber something to rant about which I'm very much looking forward to.

Now, in the long term a quali format like that will damage C4 and Sky F1 but like I say for a one off it's quite entertaining just for the drama it makes. Anymore than that then you have problems. Despite all this I'm very much looking forward to 12:30 and seeing what C4 come up with.

As for Sky, I thought they did a great job today especially post-session- they managed to get through a lot of the debate about the new format and speaking to people like Toto Wolff, Christian Horner and Nikki Lauder worked very nicely. Damon also shined as he does something that only very good pundits do and that is take a question, answer it and then raise a new topic. He turned the debate on qualifying into a wider debate about how F1 is run, a debate I found much more interesting. It was nothing revolutionary, but something I doubt you'd see Herbert or Di Resta do.

Also Crofty and Brundle were brilliant today, they were right on top of the format- even more so than some of the teams!- and make it very clear what was going on as well as Martin being very strong and clear about his views on the new format.

Does anyone know why Sky F1 aren't doing a full re-run of today's show but merely an 80 minute highlights show? But overall good coverage from them and made it seem worthwhile getting up at stupid o'clock.

Looking forward to tomorrow, should be a good race and have a feeling that Ferrari will challenge and hopefully the outlook about F1 will be a bit more positive again. Will probably post later to give my thoughts on C4.
