What made it worse for the fans at the track, is that while us TV viewers had a working 90sec countdown clock on the tower for for the driver next-in-line for elimination, the big screens at the track didn't even have a tower apparently, as it was glitching out far more for them.
I read some suggestion that the F1 app didn't have a countdown either, was anyone using it here who can confirm whether it got updated in time or not, and for which platform that was? (Android, iOS etc) Maybe the guys phone just hadn't downloaded the updated app. |

FIA/FOM have really screwed the pooch with this one. Worse qualifying since the one lap per driver idea which was better than this shit. As for it's the teams ideas, they were forced into this as if they didn't do this it will be Bernie's idea of lucky dip. The quicker Bernie and Jean Todt f-off the better. In all my 42 years of watching F1 I've never felt more so embarrassed, angry and depressed. The sport is sliding down into the pits (no pun intended) a bit like this thread has the last few years.

One thing with the F1 app - if you plan on watching the race on time delay tomorrow with live timing, I suggest you turn off the push notifications. They'd turned themselves on with the new version and spoiled the qually result for me.

Just did a rerun with the sky recording by syncing up the bbc radio coverage on iplayer to get a different perspective.
They were open minded for Q1 and Q2 and then changed their minds towards the end and obviously Q3. Jack and Tom really did a great job and worked so well together. Very enjoyable. Might do the syncing like that for a replay in the future, as it works well and did achieve a completely different perspective. Haha C4 in Ted's notebook. Sorry Anthony, you should give up competing and do what Ted said, just keep giving us the best analysis. |

Well that was the sh*t show I expected it to be...
Glad I recorded it and only just watched it. The pole driver out of the car and in the paddock before the clock stopped. ffs |

Excellent C4 F1 Titles. Had a 97-99 ITV look and enfused top & British drivers shots through the montage going on. Really liked it.

This is actually rather decent. I take it that Channel 4 can't show the qualifying until 1300hrs?

Only half an hour in, but it feels like there's a real class to Channel 4's coverage. Great insight from Webber and Coulthard, and Steve Jones might be new but seems to have hit the ground running. Can't wait to see them on a live weekend...

Why not just 1 qualifying session taking somebody out every 90 seconds ?

Why not a short qualifying session followed by a sprint race shootout?

Nice to know Karun Chandhok exists. I'm surprised they didn't at least cut to him with a camera before it began to show the team...

I think the new qually could work with a few tweaks. Firstly, have less knockouts, maybe start the elimination 1 minute later, and let the driver finish the lap they are on when the 90 secs is up, maybe even extend the 90 secs to 100 secs. It would allow some extra time but would have the unknown of who will be eliminated, which could be interesting or confusing. Also with starting a minute later, there would be more cars involved at the end of the session. It would be better than the current system.

One broadcaster has said that if qualifying moved away from a multi-session format, then they'd exit their F1 contract entirely according to Dieter Rencken. Wonder who that was?

Is Lewis deliberately holding the microphone to make it show two 4s and therefore his race number?

We're seeing a lot of digital breakup on the onboards this year.

Really enjoying the C4 coverage. It's not enough to tempt me away from Sky on a live weekend but it's still more than decent. Bit disappointed with the opening titles though, and the terrible hashtags into the ad breaks (#NiceOneSon, I mean, really...). Steve Jones isn't doing too bad either, but I guess the real test isn't until Bahrain for him.

And the new presenter? And David Coulthard? The microphones have a 4 on all four sides of the foam part - it is practically impossible to hold them without showing two 4s. |

They are using four-sided windbreaks to show the logo rather than the more usual three-sided slip-ons so showing two sides should be more difficult to do by chance. But more natural to hold the mike with one side facing yourself combined with a 3/4 on camera shot and voilą!

Pretty much BBC coverage on a new channel. Sky must be kicking themselves they didn't snap up Lee Mckenzie when they had the chance, excellent interview with Alonso. Karim was underused.

Well C4 coverage, not too bad, would have liked a run down of drivers / cars liveries but not a major loss,
Qualifying = Well i don't think i have ever seen such rubbish yet again the numb-skulls get their over paid heads together and come out with tripe like this. No good for TV not good for people at the circuit - Q1 looked like accidents waiting to happen in the pit lane. I doubt this will be repeated again. Lewis should have waved his own flag to complete his own session! And on yet another point, as to what size tv do we need to see the timings, diver listing on a 40 inch tv its way too small! (this is ongoing from previous years though) I really hope there gonna be a little more variety this year than the last 2 years, else its gonna be a boring year again! |

A very good start for Channel 4, I liked the approach to the coverage and some good insightful analysis. Steve Jones fitted in well, seems pretty natural. Hopefully it gives Sky something to think about too
Based on what we've seen today I'm definitely planning to go with C4 coverage for the live races they have this year.Given what could have happened to FTA coverage after the BBC gave it up, I think this is an excellent outcome so far - well done to those who made it happen. |
