To be honest I'm not really that surprised as I was always kind of expecting the next deal to be Sky (Or BT) getting exclusive live rights with highlights only on FTA.

I am not looking forward to the incoming overreaction from many people...According to the press release they'll also show two other primetime races on Sky Sports Mix.
But that channel is available to Sky customers only so technically all but 1 race is now behind a paywall.

Staggered. Not so much by the fact that we've gone 100% pay - I think that in the war between Sky and BT, that was always a distinct possibility - but by the timing of this and the fact that there is a new, decidedly interested, terrestrial broadcaster on the block. I'd have put money on C4 at least retaining 6 live races (say) in a new contract.

I feel for C4, who just get three seasons at the coal-face. It remains to be seen if they are interested in providing just highlights coverage.

I, at the moment, just think that Bernie and FOM need to take a good hard look at themselves. The previous deal was just about defendable. This (given the circumstances) is anything but. I'm ****ing disillusioned right now.

This news is terrible - will need to decide if switching from Talk Talk to Sky will be in order as it would be a shame for me to lose all HD F1 coverage (Sky Sports only SD on Talk Talk Youview platform). But that would be rewarding Sky for their audacious grab of the exclusive rights. #conflicted

Bet Channel 4 aren't pleased. I wonder if Sky sensed there might be a threat for the renewal and swooped in thinking Channel 4 would go after a full free-to-air package after 2018?

Wonder what the teams and sponsors will think of it...

Does it say exclusive? Guessing that's the end of free to air f1
Can't say I'm that dissapointed, if that is the case. F1 has been losing its appeal for quite a while.

I'm finding all the build up and extraneous nonsense annoying rather than informative or entertaining. Now it's off the BBC the adverts are just infuriating.

Very disappointing (if not totally surprising) news.

The timing of this does seem very strange, and this will hardly help the coverage on Channel 4. I think there is a risk that will lower audiences on Channel 4 than they might otherwise have been.

Geez. Frankly i'm surprised that TAG allowed Heuer to use their name after they sold it on...
True. I assume that they felt it was as much a part of the brand as Heuer that it could not be separated. Then again, SwFr1.15 billion has probably helped them get over it.

Genuine question: If FOM were to launch a (sensibely priced) in-house streaming service in time for 2019, would that offset the anger caused by F1 not being on Free TV?

That's the approach used by the WEC and (if not sensibly priced) MotoGP now...

I wouldn't totally give up hope that market forces will force Sky to do more unbundling.

They started on that path with NowTV, but there's plenty of road left to travel there. I don't mind paying a reasonable amount to follow the F1 season, but what I won't be doing is being forced to buy a bundle or bundles of other channels that I have absolutely no interest in in order to get that one channel.

If there was a Sky Sport F1 NowTv Season ticket in the region of £150 or so, then I'd be open to that, but short of that, Sky won't be seeing a penny of my money however much I love the sport.

Yes ALL races Exclusive from 2019 onwards to Sky F1.

The only FTA will be when Sky show the British Grand Prix, 2 other prime time races & ALL qualifying & Highlights packages on one of their channels which will be FTA.

Devastating news for F1 coverage in the UK. Viewing figures will surely hit an all time low when this deal starts.

Not with a Murdo-Sorry, Conservative Govt. in power they won't

Also, according to Autosport's article on the news:
Only the British Grand Prix will be shown free-to-air, either via one of Sky's free channels such as Pick, or by one of the BBC, ITV or Channel 4.
Also, according to the ex-FOM employee over on F1 Fanatic:
I actually heard that this was likely about a week ago but was asked not to say anything because the deal wasn’t finalized.

Just a point, There may well be an alternative to Sky by the time this deal goes live because i’ve had it confirmed to me that FOM & TATA communication are heavily investing in streaming content, They have been trialing various delivery methods & I’m hearing that app developers with experience in working with live streaming content are been brought in.

The interesting part is 4K UHD coverage by FOM.

All major sports are taking the live pay-TV route so pick your jaw off the floor and realise that is is, for better or worse, the way it will be for F1, cricket, football, golf etc.

Bad for the man in the street but better coverage for the enthusiast and hardcore fan.

Is there still scope for highlights FTA for the other races? Autosport just says Sky exclusive, whereas Motorsport.com says Sky live exclusive.

Edit: answering my own question if I'd bothered to read the source:

http://www.skysports.com/f1/news/124...019-until-2024

Free to air: The FORMULA 1 BRITISH GRAND PRIX, together with highlights of all other races and qualifying sessions, will be shown on a 'free-to-air' basis.
So if I understand that correctly, those highlights will be produced by Sky. Wonder how their interpretation of highlights will compare to Channel 4...

The difference is those rights are worth nothing. Sky are paying a lot of money, you aren't going to get any alternative.

Remains to be seen if it is sustainable for the major sports.

And how is the coverage any better? It pretty much peaked with the BBC, Sky haven't really added anything extra have they.

So bad for the man in the street, and a lot more expensive for the enthusiast and hardcore fan. And arguably we are getting a worse product than ever.

I don't care about HD, 3D, hearing people talk about F1 . All I want is to watch the races live on free to air.

So basically 2018 will be my final year of watching F1 then. Stick two fingers up to Bernie and Sky. They won't care they have lost me as a viewer but I'm sure I won't be the only one to find another sport to watch instead.

Not a fan of F1 whatsoever so happy with this news. This is the sport going into full on niche mode. A huge mistake for the sport and perhaps channel 4 will see the backlash of fan anger. Just look at cricket and how its desperately hoping to get some FTA coverage when its current sky deal is up

Might be reading things into this but the press release is rather quiet on streaming. Other such press releases would talk about rights across mobile platforms, online, that sort of thing. That one is missing that. Pehraps Sky wanted exclusive live TV coverage in order to make up for the launch of an FOM streaming service? Having no live FTA coverage (bar the Britiah GP) might push people towards that?

Could be just that Sky threw a whole load of money at FOM to stop BT Sport (or C4) putting in strong bid (Sky have done that with a number of other sports), but from what's already been discussed here, it does make me wonder......

Yes, but ignoring what the rights are worth, i'm asking, would people be less pissed off if there was a cheaper way to watch the sport without having to pay for a full Sky subscription?

Cos people talk about: "Oh media is moving less & less broadcast & all online" and all that, but when sports go off FTA TV, people complain? You can't have it both ways.
