I wish all the stakeholders in the sport would look more at the bigger picture & focus less on the short-term gains & more on the long-term.

That's the thing though, the teams don't want the logistical headache of having to set up & regulate an entirely series. Given that the teams would need to collectively agree on: Technical & Sporting Regs, circuit contracts, broadcasting contracts, 3rd party suppliers such as tyre suppliers, that sort of thing. It would never happen, or if it did happen, it would collapse in a few years like FOTA did. Also Bernie owns the rights to the "GP1" name. Also i'm sure most 3rd party suppliers of kit the teams currently have would most likely sever any existing contracts they have.
Interesting and good points. So really until they get close to actually wanting to break away, nothing much will change.

I suspect if Bernie really feared they could go elsewhere he would be bending over backwards to keep them happy.

Even if they wanted to, the legal costs involved (both in order to extricate them from F1 and to set up a new series) would be prohibitively expensive.

True fact is that F1 won't trend on Twitter in 2019, Meanwhile I even seen the BTCC on the trending topics on Twitter.

There was some mention earlier about how useful the solid/hollow tyre graphics were but, instead if RFID tags and the like, is there a reason why we can't have stickers on the tyres as we did in the 90s?

Very very tiny thing I enjoyed about the C4 coverage - using the start line tones from 'Pole Position' on one of the early VTs! That definitely appealed to the gamer in me.

Don't be silly. We should think ourselves lucky that we've had F1 FTA for so long. Most other countries haven't. Weirdly F1 is growing in America despite it being Pay TV.

OT The polesitter for round 1 of the BTCC was a natural at commentating over the pole lap. Good job.

Perhaps but they are starting from a low base and increasing their audience whereas we're going from a highly rating FTA tradition to a lower rating pay model.

It's not hard to grow from nothing in a country where F1 has failed to master for years. Also remember its the US culture that nearly all sport is on pay TV.

Is it still free in Germany? I suspect F1 is content with being a niche sport, tucked away on pay TV.

Moto GP is the best example of what will happen to the sport in years to come. The sport still exists, but for most people they couldn't care less what happens in it anymore.

I think the BTCC will see the F1 move as a great potential growth market for them. They could really fill the void with being the most mainstream FTA motorsport in the UK.

Of course ITV could also chase the BSB live for 2019 onwards aswell. They would then have a very strong FTA top British motorsport package.

I've found myself indifferent to the whole charade this year. The gradual elimination of European classic tracks, the utter farce that is qualification, gimmicks such as DRS, engines that sound like a dry fart, the absurdity of engine freezes that severely limits the ability of other teams to catch up. It's culminated in me just not bothering to switch it on!
They do seem to be trying to have their cake and eat it. It's one thing to replace classic venues with Tilkedromes and then prioritise the tourist board and CGI advertisers over the action on track when it comes to directing the broadcast, but then to expect the viewer to pay a premium price for this as well? That said, it ain't FOM's issue in the UK at least for the next eight years, and you wonder if some of the stakeholders care what state the sport will be in as long as the money keeps rolling in until then.

The US tv coverage went from delayed coverage on Speed (with the odd race on Fox) to live coverage on NBCSN (with the odd race on network NBC and CNBC).
NBCSN has a lower reach; but the focus on sport on NBC has shifted recently with the addition of Premier League football to both their cable sports channel and the network free channel.

Germany still has Quali and race coverage on RTL. Practice is on NTV - a 24 hour news channel.

Is the UK the largest market for F1? By market I'm talking about fans watching the sport, not the potential population that you can sell cars to.

It would be great to see a list of where F1 fans are meant to reside based on their support of F1.

If I was guessing I would suspect:

1. UK
2. Germany
3. Italy
4. Australia
5. Canada

Probably totally wrong.

F1 should think itself lucky it held those FTA viewers' attention for so long.

And it should take a long hard think about what it's going to do without many of them.

The new-old team is quite good - interesting hearing Suzie Wolff speaking English, In German, I had wondered if she was an Irishwoman living in Austria rather than a Scot in Switzerland. Suzie is no Goliath but compare her with Clare Williams!

The inevitable advertising on Chavnel 4 must make us wonder who they think is watching. Looking at the London region break in the highlights before the race finish.

1. Expensive faddy health food (think Waitrose) from M&S, modern chart music.
2. B&Q "northern beaver characters" but narrated by the woman.
3. Break dancing man has insured his BMW limousine.
4. Alton Towers.
5. On-line women's fashion site
6. "I only want to be with you" as if sung by Daughter (think "Enya sings Motörhead" in John Lewis Christmas ad) - "re-home a rescue dog"
7. "Tooth-whitening toothpaste" with "models on catwalk" motif and Estuary voiceover presumably replacing American original.
8. Mother and daughter grow tomatoes on city balcony.

Trailer for "The Island" - reality TV.

All of this except maybe 3 is actually aimed (I imagine) at "aspirational chav women". Wut? It's only missing mobile phone adverts with something falling from the sky onto a pretty young woman who is on the phone. Is this the demographic for Formula 1?

The teams only ever talk "breakaway" when they want a bargaining chip in new Concorde/commercial deal agreements, and even then they can't quite muster up the solidarity between them to stick together as a collective unit - they break off one by one as the bespoke deals come to them.

But it's getting pretty clear this quali fight isn't a fight about quali, it's a proxy battleground between the big teams and FOM/FIA for control of the sport.

Of course it will. During quiet periods in the past, GP2 and even GP3 have occasionally been trending as Sky are showing the race live, so I think F1 will do just fine.

There's more to F1 than where it's broadcast in the UK. Twitter won't be a problem, and not as if it's not available to anyone at all.

After serving yet ANOTHER ban for starting a thread in 'broadcasting' about adverts on British TV.
It' seems I am on some kind of 'watch' list.

I wonder how that happened?...hmmm
(god forbid anyone be slightly controversial and push the envelope here at MumsNet, be nice or out you go Mr.different, no time for anything thought provoking as we can't see past our PC noses website.)

Please..

It WAS a real good topic though.
I asked why there was a proliferation of 2 kinds of pandering TV adverts here.
1) Betting companies
2) Charity Begging

So from now on I shall try and "fit in" with the tone and tenor of the lovely DigtalSpy

Back on topic...
I liked very much the coverage wot channel 4 done did.
It were brilliant for free and in Haytch Dee. Next time vo I want me some housemates on the grid cuz they is betta van this rubbish wot we got ear

Also (pedantry alert), I'm pretty sure the series has spelt "through" wrong.

Give it a few years and they'll be powering Formula E cars with it. Wheat, that is, not questionable past participles!
