Unpleasant loudness-level aside, I just have the same emotional "that's cool" reaction to the new engines as I do with the old ones, in terms of how they sound. No better or worse to me.

That sounds so good.

Alex Wurz yesterday shared a link to one of his pole laps at Imola in '05 and I forgot how good the V10 sounded but that V12 beats it.

Here the link if anybody wants to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vsN0ZVfiTE&app=desktop

Thing is I never felt the need for ear plugs with the V10s and the 1.6 Turbos do sound too quiet especially on TV

The V10's were the best of the lot.
Superb.

Anyone had a go on the VR short in in Oculus video???

A 5 min video covering some of testing at Catalunya

Views from trackside
Driver interviews
Wandering the paddock
'In-car' footage purporting to be a camera on the roll hoop of a Williams (in a few sequences later the camera moves so I think all 'in-car' were actually from a drone hovering over the car, the panning shots of the car in motion were probably done at 20 mph etc).

Anyway it's a good little demo of 360 video, next step is 360 3d!!

Do you mean this video? https://www.facebook.com/Formula1/vi...72659406224379 it's been on Facebook for a while too. Basically if you look at the raw file, it's basically 6 static (synchronised, obviously) shots that get wrapped together digitally, to create the effect. http://imgur.com/a/CSqAZ

That'`s the video, its only appeared in Oculus video in the past few days..

I wasn't asking explanation how it works though, I've had a VR device for some time now and pretty au fait with the tech thanks. Was more interested in what people thought of the actual content.....

It's nice, but I can't see it catching on tbh.

Unpleasant loudness
Did you request some unpleasant loudness? The Matra V12?

But there is only ONE manufacturer of wailing banshee racecar engines... Zoom Zoom...

Now those are the sounds that should be coming through your TV when watching F1. I never thought I was that bothered by the engine sound until last night when I was reminded about the sound of the V10.

At least when watching the WEC, you still get the GTEs with their V8s and Nascar can sound good when Fox (I think its Fox) do their Turn it up segment for the cars screaming around.

I won't lie, it is noticable when you look at archive footage (although frankly I haven't heard that on any of the WEC onboards, it's all just a dull rumbling on there whatever the car tbh). But either way, the sound isn't a major aspect to me, hence why I have no problem listening to Formula E for example.

Formula E leaves me cold for some reason. Watched 3 of the rounds in the '14-'15 season. Not really watched any of the current season. The electric motor sound isn't an issue. It's a combination of having yesterday's grand prix drivers, odd looking spec-series chassis and a lack of outright speed that's the issue for me. Formula E would though make for a good support series.

Quick question for you F.
How many races have you been to in person?

Now I like Fe and watch it, but a support series on F1 tracks. Can you imagine how slow they would look and they would be changing cars after 6 laps.

Thats car-porn for the ears! What a sweet sound and how a racing car should sound! Non of this silly nonsense we have now where they sound like a bloody diesel!!

Unfortunately, seems the thread has been rather 'revised' as a few posts are now gone walkies!

To be honest the noise/volume of the current F1 engines don't particularly bother me all that much & on the whole I really like the current formula. They may well be quieter than engines from the past but there still producing a lot of power (I heard it mentioned recently that Mercedes are close to 950bhp) & I like that there harder to drive than the V8's they replaced because of all the extra power/torque. I also appreciate the technology, Thats always been an element of MotorSport in general that I like to dive into & try to understand as much as possible.

Looking back I did love the sound of the V12's, V10's (Was never that fond of the V8's F1 was running from 2006-2013, They were loud yes but I was just never fond of the actual sound) & things like the Mazda rotary engine but to me the sound isn't why I watch, I watch to see the cars been driven by the drivers, I watch for the speed, performance, Technology & of course the racing.

Formula E cars are quiet but I still watch every Formula E race because the racing is generally pretty good & the cars are still going more than fast enough & I'm really interested in seeing how the technology improves over the next few years.

Whenever this topic comes up I always fully understand those who hate on the current engines & who miss the noise of what we had before, But speaking personally as I say it really isn't that big of an issue for me.

In the interest of balance, I'm very pleased we now have an electric car championship. I like the FE commentary team. I like the fact it's FTA and free to view online. It's great it visits circuits like Long Beach and Monaco. But there are issues that I've previously stated that just make me somewhat ambivalent about it.

The electric Tesla Model S road car can outsprint a V8 Supercar (yes I know it's AWD vs RWD). There's a few of these cars about in the UK now and the linear acceleration on an open road is very impressive. https://youtu.be/6eGhjhx8O9M?t=2m48s

Apparently there will be an 'Electric GT World series' featuring the rear wheel drive Model S in the near future.

I posted the various videos of loud race cars to remind others that motor racing wasn't always this quiet, and for some, contemporary motor racing has lost part of it's visceral appeal.

I live around 15 fields away from Copse Corner (or 4 miles depending on yr scale) and I can no longer hear the F1 cars, even normal track day cars kick out more noise and we can hear them if out in the garden. When Silverstone classic rolls into town or WEC turns up we can hear so much noise, it's lush, I miss them days.

I have no inherent issue with the F1 sound, I like the fact you can hear other stuff going on (tire noise, Hybrid system etc). Out of the thousands of cars I've seen over the years at Silverstone my top cars for engine noise.....

Toyota TS040 LMP1
Corvette C6.R
2008 Ferrari F1
Ferrari 430 Risi
Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4
Maserati MC12

Are house prices (in the UK at least) typically cheaper near racetracks, because of the noise levels? I'd happily take advantage of that if it were the case. I guess any offset in those would be tempered by the fact that most British tracks are in pretty remote/exclusive villages anyway, which would push the prices up.

No difference really, it's within 60 min commute to central London so the prices are wild.

Silverstone's not the prettiest of villages tbh, I don't think the track adds or takes from it.

I bet you hear the Corvettes on a mid-week track day.

Glad to see that the teams have rejected the aggregate qualifying proposal. However that'll probably mean we'll get the hybrid 2015/2016 format, whereby Q3 is run to 2015 rules. Hopefully for Q1 & Q2 will be tweaked to let the driver finish the lap he's on even if his 90sec slot runs out.

But do you get the smell of campsite cooked bacon?

The 2016 Toyota TS050 is a V6 twin turbo hybrid, another quiet whooshing LMP1, so sadly won't be joining it's predecessor on your list.
"That is not noisy is it?"
