So ultimately I only saw the first three seasons and was wondering whether those two seasons are considered good and which was better of the two? I remember really loving both. What season is most similar to the tone of the first three because I can't get into DR Who now?

Season 1 by far.

But nothing is similar to the first 3 seasons in Moffats run.

Without any doubts, series 1.

After 9 years off and 16 years without a series, The 1st series was the biggest highlight of 2005.

Series one anyday, better arc, I liked Rose better with nine their relationship was so sincere. Plus one of the best arcs IMO, weeks of being followed by The Bad Wolf Meme leading up to an epic finale.

Series 2 was a very poor series (worst of the modern show) with Love and Monsters and Fear Her being some of the worst episodes in the show's history in my opinion, so Series 1 is an easy winner. Christopher Eccleston was more Doctory, Rose was more bearable, and episodes like Dalek and the Empty Child two-parter were brilliant, as well as a fairly solid first three episodes. The Slitheen two-parter, The Long Game and Boom Town were dreadful though, and the kiss at the end of The Parting of the Ways a poor way of cheapening the dynamic between Doctor and companion by turning it into a typical love story. Apart from that the finale was fairly well done and Eccleston gave a very good performance.

I say both are the weakest series since it's return (although 7 runs them close).
Both have 3 great episode - Dalek and the Gasmask boy 2 parter from series 1 and Girl in the Fireplace and the Devil two parter from series two.

Both had lots of drivel like The Slitheen episodes, Fear Her, Love and Monsters (the worst episode), The Long Game & The Cybermen two parter.

Series 1 had the better arc, Series 2 had the better finale.

It probably comes down to which Doctor you prefer, so for me Series 1 pips it.

Really Season 1 has to be one of the strongest.

The finale was very good, intriguing, heartbreaking, sense of dread, brilliant acting and just well written. Dalek and gas mask episode (top 5 of new who easily), Rose a very nice introduction to the show again. Fathers Day was brilliant and couple decent episodes. The only bad episode was Long Game, the Slitheen episodes weren't great but they had merit.

Overall i'd say a very consistent season with top quality stories.

Series 1 suffered mostly due to RTD's pop culture references - which at the time were annoying, and now 10 years later are horribly dated. The Guest writers really saved the series for me - Dalek was amazing as was the Gas Mask boy two parter with Fathers Day and The Quiet Undead being solid episodes. The rest were all written by RTD and the tone was much more childish and soap opera'ish - the Farting Slitheen, Anne Robinson droids, Toxic...etc. I think RTD got much better as his series went on, but right here at the start he was at his worst - constant Pop Culture references.

I know some people like the light and playfulness of his scripts - but for me it has to be back by quality sci-fi writing, and has to have some danger to it, both were lacking in his stories in Series one. He got the balance better as his he progressed and was writing some really good stuff towards the end.

I liked Rose, it was a good episode to get the show back up and running. And the finale was a very good story, it had everything you want in a story. The Finale had quality sci fi writing, it had danger to it from the very beginning, it had the emotion and wasn't light.

The Slitheen episode wasn't great and the farting was ridiculous, but it was by no means terrible story as it had many redeaming qualities. And is better than the likes of Fear Her, Love and Monsters.

Big Brother house, The Weakest Link with an Anne Robinson Droid, What not to Wear with Suzy and Trinny-like droids - all (now) dated pop culture references. Rose becoming empowered by the heart of the TARDIS and fixing everything was just a case of 'this happens because I say' writing. The only really good bit - The Doctor sacrificing himself to save Rose was forced into the plot due to Chris wanting to leave.

I'm not a fan of Rose - it's not the worst episode of the series, but the parts with Auton Mickey and Rose are pretty stupid.

A very close run thing as for me both were excellent.

I've gone with season 2 simply because I prefer Tennant's Doctor to Eccleston's (although I do love the 9th Doctor). Season 2 also gave us Sarah Jane Smith, Mickey as a companion (briefly) and the first proper onscreen meeting between the Daleks and the Cybermen which was truly exciting. The cliff-hanger to Army of Ghosts was (at the time) just brilliant and the whole Torchwood story arc was superb.

I am in no way taking anything away from season 1 however, which I also adore. I guess simply in terms of which I have re-watched the most it tends to be season 2.

Indeed, part of Series 2's problem for me was that I just found the Tenth Doctor and Rose completely uninteresting as a duo. Gone was the wonder of a strange and enigmatic man taking somebody through the wonders of time and space: it was half a series in and around Jackie's flat with the Doctor falling in love with a frighteningly possesive Rose for no apparent reason other than it being "modern" now (sure, there was the whole thing with her being there for him after the Time War, but it wasn't delivered very convincingly).

Eccleston was also a bit too "ordinary" for me but he did have a lot of moments where he convincingly passed off as somebody from another world, such as the first episode where he talked about feeling the Earth going around, while still managing the more intimate moments such as being unable to blow up the space station to destroy the Daleks.

Series 1 as I preferred Eccleston to Tennant.

The Long Game was good I don't know why people hate on it aswell as The Slitheen two parter just for that fact it has Slitheen, well we don't really know what aliens look like plus I loved the story and I was still engaged aswell as through the long game. Boom town was awesome too, a nice rest for the TARDIS crew and we meet Margaret again who we thought changed her way, it had a nice light hearted mix of humor too. Plus it all ties in with The Doctor coming back from Raxicoricofalipatorious and finally being transmatted across time and space by the infamous Bad Wolf Corporation.

Infact lots of other people but not particularly on this forum don't understand why Boom Town is hated I thought it was nice seeing the TARDiS Crew resting and I loved how they were a team it felt very nice and natural especially when Rose went out and about on the bay with Mickey.

Also It was just a small bloody kiss, to take the vortex out of Rose's system, I thought this rounded it off pretty well as a Modern Who fan and for Modern audiences. I also loved The Long Game, Adams first trip into the future to an Alien spaceship with a conspiracy lurking onboard, I also loved how Rose tried to be The Doctor. I have no beef with anything in Series 1 and wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Series 2 however I only liked a select amount of episodes such as Tne Impossible Planet/Satan Pit, New Earth, Tooth and Claw and the finale aswell as School Reunion and nice bit of action in Age of Steel.

And lastly Prefered Rose in Series 1 with Nine it was more friendship and having a laugh and travelling, Series 2 Rose Annoyed the hell out of me.

Same Christopher Eccleston was better than Tennant for me.

I really like Series 1 despite not liking the incumbent Doctor very much. It has some amazing episodes and I still love watching it today.

Series 2 is still my fave for the very reasons you mentioned. Plus I much prefer Rose with the Tenth Doctor and the banter between them for me is the best since the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane.

Judging by previous comments on this forum I could have predicted the outcome of this poll before it was even started! Series 2 will never win any poll no matter which Series it is battling against.

Series two has the brilliant Satan two parter and David Tennant is great as the Doctor, but the rest of the series is quite week with either poor or alright episodes, though Tooth and Claw and the finale were good.

Series 1 is more consistent in quality IMO, the only dodgy eps are the Slitheen two parter, but even in those poor eps there's some fun and interesting bits such as character interaction (9 and Micky are great together).

So easily series 1 for me.. its got classic episodes, great episodes, good episodes and a dodgy two parter with good stuff in it. Series two has a classic story, two good ones and then the rest is nothing to write home about except for the fact it has two episodes that are some of the worst DW episodes in its whole history.. and was the worst series of new who until series 9 came our way.

I loved the satan two parter we need more episodes like that, can't ever imagine them showing and episode like that on BBC One did they show it at a later time if anyone was there at time of broadcast as I only was on and off? And amen about Series 9.

Series One in 2005 I loved all the episodes with Nine and Rose. It has been my favourite series out of all of new series. However series two in 2006 has one of my favourite episodes on school reunion so neither I found bad.

Much of this will come down to whether you prefer Eccleston or Tennant. The two series were fundamentally different because they had different lead actors - and more so, Billie Piper's Rose was written very differently for each as well, with the approach taken in Series 1 being the generally more popular of the two. A more platonic love than a romantic one, which is what Series 2 heavily steered towards.

Apart from that though, Series 2 is also notable for having some of the biggest clunkers of the last ten years, whilst Series 1 fares much better in that regard. Its weakest story judging by the frequent comments is Aliens of London/World War Three - with the term "farting aliens" used to describe it much more frequently than the titles themselves. Subjectively though the farting aliens were only a part of a bigger story, and that bigger story brought a lot more to the table - the 'aliens faking aliens' angle was intriguing and different, whilst the sort-of sequel in Boom Town was an interesting concept too. When you can look past the awkward CGI-prosthetic transitions, and the kinks of the series that had yet to be ironed out Series 1 has an awful lot going for it.

Series 2 did as well. In terms of scope and variety it had some brilliant stories across its run, some of which often feel somewhat unappreciated. Equally though the aspects that do let the series down feel much more pronounced - there's no escaping the fact that we get four episodes with Cybermen stomping over London. Dress them how you want, chuck in all the parallel worlds that you like but at the end of the day it was four of these. Chuck in the fact that the four final episodes of the series were all set in suburban London - and that two of those remain some of the most heavily criticised episodes since 2005 - and that variety dries up quickly. Series 2 ultimately burnt out too early, and without the more endearing platonic relationship of Series 1 it ultimately paled in comparison.

Finally in terms of resolution, the Series 1 finale also trumps the Series 2 finale in a lot of ways. The former dares to be a full on bloodbath of all of its characters, and in Rose and Jack allowed for a closely-knit group of characters. Jackie and Mickey got to play a role that complimented their own characters without ever feeling so heavily distracting of Rose's. The Daleks proved to be a proper threat in The Parting of the Ways in a way that they have not been threatening since, all the way through to Series 9. The story never tries to resolve the obliteration of Earth and accepts as well that the link to events a century earlier in The Long Game led to all of this - proper consequences, and an intriguing way of showing how the Doctor misses the experience of living things 'the long way around'. Series 2 replaced the rather impressive set design for the previous series finale with a bunch of offices and Cardiff-filmed corridors, doubling as Canary Wharf. It backed out of any real interesting confrontation between the Daleks and the Cybermen and was ultimately just a faster-paced version of the finale from the series before - with added consequences for Rose. Both were very good stories, but the former felt much more rewarding and overall I'd say that that is how Series 1 feels as a whole.

I am going to do a short review of both seasons to determine which is best.
Now in the part of the episode ratings, i will go off what i feel the general consensus of the episode.
S1- Top tier episodes include the Gas Mask 2 parter, Fathers Day, Dalek, The finale
S1- Good/Solid episodes include Rose, Unquiet dead
S1- Average episodes include End of the World and the Slitheen episodes. I believe even though the farting is ridiculous, the story itself still has a lot of merit.
S1- Bad episodes include The Long Game

S2- Top tier episodes- Girl in the Fireplace, (arguably the beast 2 parter, but i think it is just a tad below top tier)
S2- Good to top tier- The beast 2 parter
S2- Good/Solid episodes- The Finale, Idiots Lantern, Tooth and Claw, Cyberman story
S2- Average episodes- New Earth, School Reunion
S2- Woeful episodes- Love and Mosnters and Fear Her are generally considered in the worst of Doctor Who, not just the new series.

The first season was a lot more raw and real with heavy hitting episodes with emotional payoff. And the Doctor, Rose, Mickey all worked very well in season 1. And Captain Jack was great in his cameo.

The second season for the most part was definitely more light and chilled, now in this season i despised Rose as a human being. This comes down to the relationship with The Doctor changing, and now she treated everyone horribly. So much so Mickey left to a parallel world.

So, Season 1 had the stronger episodes with more consistency in its episodes, and the character development, interactions with each other were done far better.

So Season 1 wins, comprehensively.

I think, besides the Doctors, it depends largely on which tone you prefer too, whether it's the more eerie and intense tone of Series 1 or the camper and more light-hearted tone of Series 2. I found the latter overbearingly annoying so it's another way in which I prefer the first series.

I agree with all the sentiments above (apart from referring to it as 'season' 2, tut tut ). Hard to choose between the series because they are so different - series 1 for me has no dud episodes at all, but then series 2 has the doctor/rose relationship at a more evolved level and mostly brilliant episodes, if not all of them (of which I only consider 2 duds). In the end I'd go for series 2 overall, because whilst series 1 and Eccleston are great, I love seeing the 10/rose pairing, and how it has progressed so much more since series 1.

I've often heard people on here talk about 'series 1/series 2' rose as though she was 2 different characters in the two different series, but for me the character never changes, her relationship with the doctor just changes naturally as they get more familiar with each other. To have had her constantly wary and slightly unsure of the doctor throughout would have been totally unrealistic.

It's kind of odd really as I can't fault RTD's writing of Rose's character - nor Piper's acting. She didn't feel like she had a personality transplant between the two series or anything quite that bad (a fate I can't say didn't befall Mickey) but I think it was more a case of the direction they took with the character. They did decide to transition from a platonic relationship with Nine, to a romantic one with Ten. And if Eccleston had stayed for Series 2, I don't get the slightest impression that they would have pursued this romantic direction.

In some respects I also feel the romantic approach also interferes with some of the stories a little too strongly - mainly those not written by RTD. School Reunion was a good episode, but I felt it also a bit of a shame to have both Rose and Sarah-Jane fawning over the Doctor rather than envying eachother's adventures which would have been enough. The Girl in the Fireplace felt really odd in some respects, as the Doctor fleetingly discarded the ongoing romance with Rose as soon as Reinette was on the scene. For a while it felt a little too much like Tennant was portraying another casanova. Rose then later became part of a romantic double act with the Doctor (her peculiar behaviour in The Idiot's Lantern, to a lesser extent then also in The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit). It just felt like the character, though competently written enough, had been reduced to a far simpler, far more romantically-oriented version of what she'd been in Series 1. It was natural character development to an extent, but it wasn't particularly satisfying.

I think for some this is made all the worse by the constant references to Rose in Series 3 as well. At the time we had no idea she'd be back for Series 4, and so the references took their toll and gradually wore down some people's liking of the character. I do agree though that pursuing the route of unease towards the Doctor wouldn't have been particularly realistic or sensible - it worked for Clara in Series 8 of course, but Ten was much more of a socialite than Twelve. I just think the romantic route was one that cheapened both the direction of the character, and to be honest the relationship between the characters. Keeping it more mysterious, unique and subtle worked wonders for Series 1. Going full on with the romantic angle was a bit...dare I say it, predictable.

Well, I was going to try and cover certain stuff re: Rose, but think Abomination has covered most areas there and I I have a not dissimilar similar take.

It's absolutely not a criticism of Piper, or indeed Tennant and the writers, as looking back, the fact that Rose was less likeable in Series 2 (okay, that's opinion rather than fact!) was I think absolutely deliberate and a fair artistic choice. The giddy stuff we saw in 'Tooth and Claw' led to the creation of Torchwood, and we saw how that played out in 'Doomsday'. Ten/Rose being smug tw*ts to Mickey in the Cybermen 2 parter...well, that led to him making a choice at the end of the story. (leg it!) Then she got all upset?! Piper herself was quoted as saying Rose "could be a selfish b****" at times.

But yeah, I think making Martha the 'rebound' companion was not a good move. "Rose would know what to do." sighs the Doctor in 'Shakespeare Code'. Yeah, sure she would.

I do respect that for a lot of people Ten/Rose was a big deal, but the Nine/Rose relationship worked better for me. And, back vaguely on topic, it's what helped make Series 1 so vital and fresh at the time and why I voted for it here!
