Glen Frey of Eagles dies at 67

Yet another one gone to the great gig in the sky.

Glen was one of the guitarists and founder member of American soft rock band Eagles. Who hasn't heard Desperado, Take it Easy, New Kid in Town, Life in the Fast Lane and of course the magnificent Hotel California?

Very much a band of the 70's, their appeal crossed all generations and they were deservedly one of the most successful bands to come out of the US.

For anyone who wants to bury themselves in Hotel California once again, I'd like to recommend this track from YouTube, where Tommy Kessler (from Blondie and Rock of Ages) plays all seven guitar parts .. it's a real treat to those of us who have struggled to play this iconic riff, with or without a mate on the 'other' guitar!

RIP Glen .. thanks for the tunes!

A sad day for music, Hotel California was one of the best albums of all time and it's sad that Glen is not getting a proper tribute and expression of grief in terms of the loss to modern culture

Very sad news. I lived in London when Hotel California first came out in and I always remember going to the Hard Rock Cafe with my brother who was visiting, they played the whole album so loud you could hardly hear yourself speak. My favourite Frey song is Take It Easy which he co-wrote with Jackson Browne.

I'll be playing my Eagles stuff later and thinking of Glenn, he contributed a lot to that band. RIP.

Another sad day for music. The music industry has lost so many true greats in 2016 and it's only 3 weeks old!
The Eagles were one of my biggest influences when i started out

Another huge loss for music.

I was furious to hear some of the commentary on the radio earlier about how The Eagles were just a popular 70s band, not influential, of their time, talented bunch but nothing more than that...

As a 26 year old who wasn't even born when they were popular, yet has been heavily influenced by the guitars on their records in my own playing, all I can say is what utter, utter claptrap. They were as big as Bowie in their own way and we shouldn't be denigrating their legacy just because they weren't British and didn't dress up differently for every new album. The huge popularity of their reunion tours and the enduring popularity of tribute bands is testament to the power of their music.

You can't forget the banger from Beverly Hills cop 'the heat is on' absolutely brilliant.

Lemmy on bass, Bowie on vocals, Glenn Frey on guitar and Dale Griffin on drums. That's a pretty decent band just arrived up there

So glad I got to see Glenn and the Eagles play the 02 recently, superb musician and songwriter. Favourite Glenn Frey song is We Belong To The City, unashamedly 80's but love it.

Sad day.

Missed that one! Really liked early Mott the Hoople. How many more to go this year?

Was on the BBC news website but nothing more. Yes, another good guy. What is worrying me is that I am older than all of them!

Very, very, very sad news.

It feels like a part of music has died today. All those iconic, much-loved songs that are like old friends will never be performed again by the original band members. So upsetting.

Rest in peace Glenn.

This is getting silly how many great artists are dying in such a short space of time. Anyway RIP Glen Frey. Also agree that those radio comments seem fairly short sighted and idiotic, there are a lot of recent acts that still quote them as an influence and it ignores the fact that Frey's career went on after the 70's.

Whoever said all of that to me is full of it. My introduction to the band was through the country music tribute album named Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles an album that never would have been thought of if what that radio person said was true.

God bless you and Glen's family and the remaining band members always!!!

Another great gone..such surprising and depressing news..not influential? Jeezo that's a load of guff..if it weren't for the Eagles..you would have no industrial, grunge or modern rock really. .music now has evolved from that period. .not pop..sadly. .

Take it easy Frey wherever you are next to your talented kind in the plain of higher consciousness. .wherever just hope you are all together arguing!

I think it has to be accepted that this year will probably bring the deaths of more members of groups from the sixties and seventies.

A contemporary of "The Eagles," formed in 1971, was the group, "Bread,"

Of all the post 1971 members, only David Gates survives and he's 75.

Perhaps not as decent as;

Vocals: David Bowie
Bass: Phil Lynott (gone 30 years now, can you believe it)
Drums: Keith Moon
Guitar: Jeff Healey *

* Won't be known by everyone. Check him out. He was a blind Canadian blues guitarist, who actually did a better version of 'All Along the Watchtower' among many great songs, a number of which he also wrote.

As for Glenn Frey, I won't be a hypocrite and pretend I liked him, especially after the business with Felder. But, I'm sorry he's gone. Now there will never be an opportunity for him to patch things up and reunite the full band.

BTW, anyone who hasn't seen the Eagles tribute band Talon, should really give it a go. Seriously great musicians.

I can almost feel a fresh thread coming on here, especially as we all have our own Great Gig In The Sky supergroups!

For me it would have to be:

Chris Squire on bass
Keith Moon on drums
Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar
Jon Lord on keyboards
Freddie Mercury on vocals (maybe Janis Joplin as well - could be an interesting mix!!)

Anyone care to add/disagree?

The bust up with Felder, not an original band member, was over money with Frey and Henley insisting on a larger share of the band's income, Felder sued both of them when he was fired from the band in 2001. As for reuniting the full band that was most unlikely given the state of health both physically and mentally of Randy Meisner, a founding member, who hasn't played with the Eagles since 1977.

I feel very privaliged that I have seen some of these greats live. I saw The Eagles a couple of years ago and David Bowie at Isle of Wight 2004. I also saw Ben E King a few years ago who sadly died last year. It does really seem like all the greats are leaving us.

Peter the Great: As a big fan of live music I know exactly what you are saying there. Great to hear you managed to see what has sadly turned out to be one of their last shows.

And yeah sadly we've got to the stage where these icons that defined music are leaving us. I think what makes it harder to take is bar a handful of elite acts of the current music scene there are few people coming through that will ever be in the same class. It seemed to be for that golden generation of musicians anything was possible both in terms of artistic and commercial success. Now we’ve just got a world where Justin Bieber rules. God help us.
