Hi all,

I have a 16 year old cat who has some trouble with her joints and the vet prescribed Meloxicam two years ago. Recently I noticed she was drinking a lot more water so took her to the vet where we were told her kidney function isn't great but nothing to worry about for now, and to reduce the meloxicam as it can cause AKF.

Cat was also prescribed Yumove and some super expensive Kidney friendly food but I want to take her off the Meloxicam/Metacam because the internet is very against it.

Any advice/alternatives?

My elderly dog recently had a dew claw injury. I was really upset with the vet when she gave her a pain shot - then told me it was Metacam. This after I had told her that I try to avoid drugs on account of her failing liver and kidneys..
However in your case I guess it is a risk v benefit analysis - ie a life of pain v the risk from something like Metacam.
I can't answer about the alternatives but I would definitely look at home cooking v one of those expensive prescription diets that vets tend to have in their surgeries and promote.
All my experience has been with dogs but I have found that many vets are unable to advise about nutrition.

Are you getting the Yumove online?

Thank you for your reply, the Yumove was from the Vets but I believe it might be cheaper online?

Cat is now on a kidney friendly diet, from the vets, Hills brand, and I've stopped the metacam. I will keep an eye on her but very reluctant to go back to Metacam.
