Though in the US this with Smiths' best opening (the next being "I Am Legend" with almost half that) and apart from "MIB3" he's had a decade of low closing films so he's not the draw his A+ Name Recognition would suggest

Yeah I had also read that about it being the best opening for a Will Smith film!

It will be interesting to see the box office after this weekend as estimates had it around $400 million worldwide which doesn't sound bad but is being reported as a possible plunge at the box office

I think the lack of big blockbusters in August could go in Suicide Squad favour as films like Pete's Dragon are not being marketed at the same audience as Suicide Squad!

Just came back from watching. It was okay, walked out feeling kind of disappointed but it had its moments. Definitely not a film I would think was directed by Ayer but hey, Harley Quinn & Diablo were my highlights, Waller & Captain Boomerang were good too. With the exception of Diablo's back story that bar scene made me cringe.

On another note, I really need to arrive after the ads, it really is getting depressing with what they are showing: 2 drowning ads, 1 dad dying of a heart attack ad & 1 motorcyclist dying ad.

The trailers were quite disingenuous making out The Joker was far more important to the story than he actually was, as for the ending if I see another big CGI monster that get's offed with some glib one liners.

Apparently he was initially but then test audiences thought he was too abusive and evil to Harley so WB lost their balls and cut most of the Joker scenes out...
WB are so incredibly reactionary and seem to have forgot the Dark Knight and how well received that was, especially Heath Ledger. Joker was hardly a nice guy in that...

I love Heath's portrayal but can't believe how much flak Leto is getting for his, some more screen time was much needed, also those costumes his men were wearing were pretty damn cool, shame the film the trailer promised didn't materialise.

I really enjoyed Deadpool, and I really enjoyed Suicide Squad. But the stories in both were shit, as were the villains. The thing that saved both films were the great characters, and there was some great action in both, but I think the stories they were telling really let them down.

I think the likes of The Winter Soldier sets the standard post TDK.

Why did this get a bad rap from critics? Im tempted to see it but it got horrible reviews or is that normal for critics to just be assholes and slag the films off?

One thing I found odd someone who saw the film said Batman punched Quinn right in the face and knocked her out then gave her a aggressive snog. That seems a bit off of a thing the batman character would do.

To be fair, the critics were mostly right. Judged by the merits that so-called professional critics should be using, such as evaluating the acting, directing, writing, plot etc, the film's an absolute mess, however, that doesn't mean it can't also be fantastic fun and entertaining, which ultimately is the criteria the audience should use to judge if they liked it or not, and which this film certainly is. IMO it's worth seeing for Margot Robbie in tiny hot pants alone, but the Times film critic, say, has to be a bit more objective than that.

If you're tempted to see it, go and see it and you'll probably like it.

For what its worth, I have no allegiance to either Marvel or DC, just grew up on Superman and Batman, loved the Nolan Trilogy and enjoy a lot of the new Marvel Superhero films.

However, was not a fan of MoS or BvS. So I was pleasantly surprised!!

Some of it was a bit of a mess but enough of it wasn't.

Negatives

Jared Leto's Joker did nothing for me, way too try hard. Heath is a tough act to follow.
Hated the character of Enchantress, not helped by the fact I think Cara Delevingne is an awful actress.

Positives

Will Smith and Margot absolutely shone. They have a lot of chemistry, as seen in Focus. Viola Davis was excellent and I enjoyed the squad dynamics as a whole. Really liked Boomerang and Rick Flag.

And soundtrack was great!

A solid 7.5/10 for me.

I don't think Deadpool should be seen as a standard.
That means that other superhero films will try and do what Deadpool did. Which will ultimately make all superhero films the same. Which is not what we want.
It's good for characters and films to possess their own individual style.

A standard is not a formula.
I'd welcome more Superhero flicks that go R rated.

Slightly confused by the critical reception as I mostly enjoyed it and found it a fun, if a little fluffy, movie. Jared Leto needs his own movie in which he can show his stuff, difficult to judge him based on what amounts to little more than just a cameo. Liked the group dynamics and interplay. But I think Warners/DC are rushing these things and trying to cram too much in, characters and stories need space to breathe. Really hope Wonder Woman addresses this issue.

Wow, that really was an utter mess.

It reminds me of what Friends and The Big Bang Theory became. Short 20 second clips that offer a nugget of not a great deal before bouncing on to something else. Like the film had been constructed ready made to cherry pick a trailer from but unfortunately they chose literally all the best bits for the trailer hence there was nothing new for the film.

The Harley scene with the lift was a classic example of this. Utterly pointless scene, a meaningless fight, chance to play another 'cool' track and then walks out with everyone giving her the clichéd amazed look.

Another example of the laziness of the writers were Flagg's SEAL's suddenly having scuba diving gear. I know that sounds like a nit picky point but it demonstrates just how people are spit balling ideas 'wouldn't it be cool if we had to swim underwater' and then no one saying 'hang on, the city has been devastated where do we get the gear from?'.

I guess people offering those opinions would be fired for wanting to install cohesion to the script and told to make way for people with more 'cool and totally radical' ideas.

I really wanted to give the film a chance but it was so uninvolving and the characters so unengaging. They weren't written with any verve or intelligence, just the barest most generic collection that you could think of.

None of them were really bad (as in being labelled the worst of the worst), just a little naughty. Waller's character was written to be unpleasant but I don't think playing an evil character suddenly makes the actor playing her a great performer, which seems to be the vibe that I'm getting.

Will was the magnetic hero, sorry anti hero though he never actually did anything bad. His character at the beginning of Hancock was more edgy than Deadshot with his 'cos I've been drinking b***h'. Harley on the other hand was the sexy eye candy masquerading as a strong female character. Unfortunately though without any decent writing for her, she was the surface level hot pants that everyone was saying that she wasn't but in reality was. As ridiculous as Psylocke in X-Men Apocalypse but with people telling you 'oh no, she's much more than that'. She wasn't.

The fights felt empty and nothing more than a darkened jumble of hard to see motion, loud crashes and whatever piece of music they had commissioned and rammed in to make it all feel really cool. And as for the ending, we had the usual swirly lights and overwhelming destructive power that can amazingly be destroyed with a few well placed grenades.

I can't believe I'm saying it but I think B vs S held my attention more and that was shocking.

Utterly woeful effort.

I went and saw this again last night and I think it is worth the second look. It cemented my feelings for the film that there are parts that showed great promise, but ultimately I think a heck of a lot got left on the cutting room floor. When Diablo, Harley or Walker came on screen, it held my interest, but I found myself getting bored in bits.

I maintain, that for me, it wasn't as good as Guardians of the Galaxy or Deadpool. Both of these films I have watched numerous times and I never get bored.

Suicide Squad as a brand has the potential in the right hands to be something great.

I think that the reason that Leto's Joker may not be a fan favourite is the fact that a lot of his and Harleys back story has been left on the cutting room floor. There disfuntional relationship in the comics (or at least in the animated series from the 90's where I remember it from) is not clearly defined here. There were flashes of it in the film and I did catch the real PTSD moment Harley had when she was in the stairwell and it flashed back to her "rebirth".

Anyway, I've rambled quite a bit. It will be interesting to see if DC/WB build on this.

this was the first film that I saw with my Odeon Limitless card. I enjoyed it. More Joker scenes would have been appreciared. Gutted to hear that WB lost their nerve and cut most of Leto's scenes. He does psycho really well.

He had a tough job to follow Ledger's portayal. It's been made untouchable since he died.

I would watch it again.

I watched this back on Satuday, and in the same respect as Dawn of Justice, I was left entertained, maybe even more with this than Batman vs Superman. I thought the characters worked well, and the plot delivered. The cameos were nice too, not overly done. However;

El Diablo: The hell?

Harley Quinn: I've seen a lot of critics (good and bad) praise the character, and Margot's portrayal of her. Honestly, I'm betting that's solely on the tits and ass aspect. Her character didn't suck, but I wouldn't say she was stand out either.

Jai Courtney & his portrayal of Captain Boomerang: with exception to his role on Spartacus (Blood and Sand) every other film I've seen this guy in, he's sucked. Namely, I, Frankenstein, Die Hard 5 and Terminator Genysis. However, I think the guy did a good job as Boomerang, which was a pleasant surprise.


I must agree (in full) with both these points. Cara is a poor actress, and whilst I could get used to Leto, he's got a long way to go before he bests Heath. Should probably bare in mind here that Heath had a film to his name, Leto had minimal screen time here.

I thought she was really good at portraying Harley Quinn and when I saw it the second time, I caught ever so subtle shifts in tone and emotion that showed how "broken" psychologically Harley really is


yup on both. I think if we had more Leto it would flesh out the character or at least they could have had the Batman film first to introduce the Clown King and Queen of Crime and their involvement in Robins death. And on that note I do hope that the Batman film will be

Oh, don't get me wrong, I didn't dislike the character, it's just what he turned out to be and his ability to go up against that other demonic creature in the way that he did.


Admittedly, I'm not that familiar of her. I know who she is, and her relationship with Joker, and from the scatty/emotional wreck perspective the actress did a stand out job, I just didn't think she deserved the (over)praise that she received I guess... Maybe I'll change my mind on a second viewing.


I don't know what that story is all about, but I'm hoping that the solo Batman flick will be more an Arkham Asylum setup; him being placed in and having to fight his way out or something. Be a welcome way to introduce a bunch of characters that we probably wont see much else of in this version of the DCEU.


I don't think you need to worry about Harley, although it'll be interesting to see where they take it now between her and Joker. I can't imagine Harley returning to the squad without Joker, but at the same time, I can't imagine Joker being susceptible enough to joining the SS, by force or negotiation.
