Plenty of people (hopefully the vast majority but who knows) got the scene so either they are super smart (in which case, thank you) or the ones who didn't get it are... well "less" smart.

I'm not arguing that it was probably a muddled scene, very similar to the Martha element in Dawn of Justice, but nobody should honestly consider that Batman was trying to kiss, rather than resuscitate Harley, regardless of how the scene looked, it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to work out the intention wasn't to go in for a kiss.

It's actually quite simple, the themes and elements that led up to the scene, the crash, the apparent unconsciousness of Harley and Batman wanting to capture her (and Joker). There is no logic what-so-ever in Batman making out with Harley. There's no purpose for it, there's no logic to it, it just wouldn't add or take away from the film. I get that's what the scene may have looked like, but anyone who's at least semi intelligent should know that isn't what the scene intended.

Looking very likely that the film won't be released in China which will hit their profits quite hard, although it does appear that the initial figure of $800 million that it supposedly needed to turn a profit was way off.

I enjoyed it overall. Deadshot and Harley were definitely the highlights, while The Joker did indeed seem wasted. Having said that I don't think Leto's portrayal was as good as Ledger or Nicholson.

I do question what film some of the reviewers were watching to earn such scathing criticism. Same as BvS - neither deserve to be put up there as one of the best superhero films, but they are a long long LONG way off being one of the worst. I'd even rank both above the first Captain America film, which I thought was awful and probably the MCU's worst movie.

The major weapon of the squad was Enchantress - someone who could easily give an "evil Superman" a fight. When the woman made her presentation to the Pentagon she didn't even mention any of the other villains - the whole success of the program depended on Enchantress. The rest of the squad were more back-up, which was why it was so disastrous that Enchantress went rogue. At that point they didn't have any choice other than to send the rest of the squad in and hope they could stop her.

My understanding of the fight with Enchantress at the end was that some of her power was still linked to her brother. When El Diablo took him down, she became vulnerable again.

I disagree. They're half arsed unfinished films born out of greed and nothing else - no vision or artistic motivation behind it.
No one behind the camera has any passion for the project but just tries to squeeze as much money out of it as possible.
They're a corporate product through and through which makes them the worst.
Films with such iconic characters, great actors and mega budget have no excuse to be this mediocre and bland.
People need to stop making allowances for sub par meh films just because they have the odd cool scene.

I'd read the figure 650 million was what they needed to break even, but I can't remember exactly where I read that (it might even have been this very thread).

I think, on the whole, Warner Bros will be pretty pleased with Suicide Squad. Yes, the reviews were mostly dreadful, but it seems to be doing pretty well at the box office. It's stayed number one in the US for three weeks and looks to be chugging along quite nicely. Both it and Batman v Superman have had serious issues, but they're probably going to make a bit of profit.

Now, just imagine if they could make a really good film...

If they really need $650 millions to break even then they won't be pleased as the film hasn't reached that yet and it has already been released everywhere.

At best, I'd say it had to make about $500 million to break even. When all is said and done, SS will probably finish somewhere between $650 - $680 million WW.

I think you're right with the last sentence and we would actually get much better films if we all stopped making allowances. I can't remember when it happened but somewhere along the line my expectations of films in general dipped so much that all I want from them now is a fairly consistent logic and the odd cool scene.

I'll even forgive a film if it is memorably, lol, bad all the way through.

I came out of this pretty much feeling the same was as after X-Men: Apocalypse, disappointed at the waste of what could have been a great film.

There were positives. I quite liked most of the squad members, especially Margot Robbie who stole the film. Some of the action was good and Amanda Waller was excellent and of all of them I though El Diablo was the most fleshed out character.

But the story felt disjointed and messy. The bad guy was badly done and the threat just never really seemed all that terrible. Some of the performances were not so good including Rick Flag who was OK I suppose. Will Smith got annoying but, for me at least, the worst of the main cast was Jared Leto who I felt was woefully miscast as the Joker. Apart from the character being underused I just felt Leto's performance was wrong from beginning to end.

I didn't feel like I wasted my time but I was disappointed it wasn't better.

I think you find a certain poster lives in the real world and doesn't care near as much about how much money a film makes as you do.

Bad films making loads of money is nothing to celebrate, it's very sad and only leads to more equally bad films. But if that's what you're into, congrats.

Whether a film is bad is subjective - the fact that it has made this amount, even without China, means the word-of-mouth is at least decent.

It might also mean that its marketing has been doing its job.

Isn't the rule of thumb usually that marketing is about the same as the budget? If that's true, they must be making a bit of profit by now. At the time of writing, Box Office Mojo says it's made 637 million - more than three time the production budget. I know Hollywood accounting is pretty murky, but Warner Bros will be making quite a bit of dough by now, surely?

going by first 3 films of DCEU and MCU, DC is currently 600m infront or something. its been a very strong start for them. time will tell if JL can match avengers though at box office.
