Great Gig in the Sky - the best line-up of those who have left us

With the recent demise of several well known characters from the world of rock and popular music, I suggested on another thread that now might be a good time to consider your all time super group, comprising artists from among those who have left us, whether it was last week or several years ago.

You could spend forever thinking about this one, so I'll start things off with the following line-up:

Vocals: Freddie Mercury (maybe Janis Joplin too - could be an interesting vibe!)
Guitars: Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan
Bass: Chris Squire
Keyboards: Jon Lord
Drums: Keith Moon

We all have our best band in mind .. what's yours?

Depends on the type of music played - to my mind, Sandy Denny is the greatest singer this country has produced, but I wouldn't like to hear her fronting a band consisting of Hendrix, Lemmy and Keith Moon for example.
Moony was a great drummer, but I'd have to vote for John Bonham, if only based on other drummer's comments about how good he was. Hendrix was a true original and has never been bettered, but is perhaps too individual to be part of a great band. I've always thought Paul Kossof of Free is a really under-rated guitarist. I wouldn't argue with Chris Squire or John Entwhistle, with Jon Lord or Rick Wright on keys. Singer is a tough one - Ronnie James Dio maybe, or Bon Scott?

In my head I am now trying to imagine what Dusty Springfield would sound like singing "Ace of Spades" accompanied by Philthy Phil and Lemmy.

As you say, a good singer would not necessarily sound good placed with certain Bands.

This thread was beginning to look as if nobody had an opinion, so thank goodness for the last two posters!

When you start to break it down there are indeed so many fine musicians and vocalists from the past, covering all genres. Perhaps it was a little ambitious of me to imagine that a single super group could be convened this way!

Because of the complexity of all our favourite musos working together (or not) this was never going to be as straightforward as fantasy football. I guess we'll just have to stick to voting for our favourite individual in each category and ignore the unlikelihood of Dusty Springfield singing alongside Lemmy ... nice one chitarivera (q.v.)!

It is an amusing idea though to imagine people performing outside of their genres.

I am now thinking of Lemmy 'singing' The Look Of Love.

I'll say
Cozy Powell - drums
Entwistle - bass
Rory Gallagher - guitar
Jon Lord - keys
Jeff Buckley - vocals.

Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury and David Bowie would be a hell of a show methinks...though would they be trying to out do each other instead of combining? All could sing, write and produce of course too.
