Just watching this on Netflix and the first 3 seasons are in 4:3 then Season 4 is in widescreen then Season 5 goes back to 4:3 , what's up with that ? is there any setting in Netflix to alter this ?

Nothing in settings as far as I am aware, but I did find this

It seems there were some issues with Buffy in Widescreen, which is a shame really.

The first 2 seasons of Buffy were shot on 16mm film rather than 35mm and not framed for widescreen conversion. It's still possible but the picture quality would not be that good and may in fact turn out really "grainy" with a bit of a washed-out look. This could be fixed in Post obviously but bear in mind that some shots may have cameras, staff, extras, ends of set walls etc. in them and zooming in to "fix" those would end up wrecking the entire frame.

Season 3 was the first where Widescreen was taken into account when setting up shots, but if you notice most of the action is in the centre 4:3 area as most TVs in the US at the time were still 4:3. It's only around S6-7 coinciding with S1 of Angel that they started actually using most of the shot area.

If they were to even transfer to Blu Ray they'd need a LOT of work done on them in much the same way that the Friends, Cheers & Seinfeld eps have had over the last few years.
