I think it is definitely time for a change and for Moffatt to leave. I've not been overly keen on his era including the overly complicated arcs, constant breaks and the abysmal effect on the anniversary year. He may be a great and clever writer of individual stories but as a showrunner.. Not so great Imo

He did well with the anniversary year getting it as hyped as it was. Can't fault him on that.

His hype is always better than what's actually delivered. The anniversary year is a good example of that. My biggest wish for Chibnall is that he commits 100% to the show in the same way RTD did.

But in the case of the 50th anniversary, it is something that was required, and it was a good story even if it could have been better.
But on the whole i agree with you.
The cynic in me can't help but think they held back this announcement to make the gap year seem less long.
To me, I don't think Steven Moffat head was fully with the show for the last few years. It's the Douglas Adams effect all over again, where Moffat suddenly found success with two shows, not one but unlike Adams, he chose to stay with both. I see a solid vision for the show over the first few years of the Moffat era but after that things just seem more haphazard. It's really very obvious the guy was struggling to keep up with two series but, in my opinion, Doctor Who came off worse than Sherlock did.
As for Chris Chibnall, I'm of mixed opinion. His work on Broadchurch has improved his standing but then he was also responsible for a lot of the early Torchwood stuff and shows like Camelot. But showrunning and writing are two different skills and, having run a show in the US, he might be more inclined to share the workload more than Moffat did.
Regardless, the only positive to be taken from this announcement is that the BBC are claiming to be committed to the show for at least 2 more series.

Yep, glad you, Benny and a few others have picked up on this. The show has a two series order and is definitely on air until 2018! That's quite a rare thing in this day and age!

We already knew that the BBC had plans for the show till 2020.
Im guessing now that this means. Chibnall has a 3 series contract.

Chibnall's Doctor Who episodes have never really wowed me, however, I absolutely adored Broadchurch (even the second season!) so maybe with a little more control he'll do wonders for the show.

Will there be a "Doctor Who" beyond 2020 though? If the ratings continue their
slide, and international markets dry up, the BBC might decide to put the property
on another "indefinite hiatus".

I Seem to recall 2020 being mentioned in some official BBC document as well as Moffat saying it (could be wrong).

Again, where was this actually reported? I remember Moffat supposedly saying something about discussing the next five years of Doctor Who with BBC bosses, which is quite quite different.

As current Showrunner, of course SM would've been involved in discussions about the long term future, but signed a contract to 2020? Seriously doubt that. I would guess if it wasn't for Broadchurch 3 filming in May, Moffat would've been off after the last Xmas Special.

I can't speak for the person you were quoting obviously, but for me The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood was awful. I was taking absolutely ages to warm to Amy in Series 5, and even the Eleventh Doctor to an extent (though Matt Smith gave it his all from the start). This two-parter reinforced everything I didn't like about Series 5 - it left me feeling absolutely nothing for the characters, it felt dull, it felt derivative, it was a clunky mess of a story, it again cheapened the idea of death (Rory's second death was here). Series 5 left me feeling cold until near its end, in spite of some genuinely good episodes. Unfortunately I felt these were two episodes that were not good either...in fact they still rank as some of my least favourites. But worryingly, they're not even my least favourite Chibnall-penned episodes.

Nobody associated with the show ever said Moffat signed a 5 year contract. G_Sales did say it on here, but then G_Sales said a lot of things.
Two different things. The BBC had a 5 year business plan for the show, taking us up to 2020 with the show, presumably, in production in one way or another. Separate from that Moffat signed up for series 10, which soon became apparent meant Moffat Who would be with us until 2017.

Not very convincing is it? No Doctor Who because of sporting events? They didn't even try that one back in 2012. You get the sense Doctor Who ended up in Autumn almost by accident following the chaos of production between 2011 and 2013, and now they're simply getting it back to what is clearly its natural home - Spring. (I'm a fan of the 70s show so winter seemed natural to me, but I'm an old fart of a fan not a TV exec).

6 episodes in late 2016 + a Christmas special, 6 episodes for spring 2017 and a Christmas special, full series in 2018.

I personally disagree with that. With a split series the show is gone again before its had any time to build momentum.
It's not the only reason but the split in Series 7 somewhat contributed to what makes it my least favorite of the nine.
woah, no news for so long, and then the sudden announcement of when series 10 will be and confirmation of Moffat leaving. Not to mention about 6 or 7 threads on the main page discussing it.
Can't say I'm not pleased about Moffat going. It was certainly time. To this day he can still deliver a good episode, but he has never done a single decent series arc for me, so that's something I can look forward to, there being the chance of a good one actually happening again in series 11.
Think it's a shame that series 10 couldn't be under the new showrunner, as that would have worked out well like it did with the RTD to Moffat takeover, plus having had no series this year, the hype would have really given a new era a boost. Ah well.

Two series running with a very erratic and later time slot to accommodate the rubbish shows round it didn't help. Why the BBC couldn't see that or if they didn't care I don't know.

The best way to judge him is on the work he has ultimate control of (ie. on his own show) so you should be very optimistic.

This concerns me. As if his job didn't carry enough weight of expectation already it seems this additional camp is forming who are burdening him with the expectation to return the show to the style they prefer. Let's nip this in the bud right now. He is not Moffat and he is not RTD. We should expect the show to have a new style, not any previous one.
It sounds like this is just one more faction who is destined to hate him - in this case for not being RTD.
