So who will be Chibnall's Doctor?

It's more than likely that Capaldi will be leaving with Moffat and Chibnall will be casting a new Doctor for the start of Series 11 (or possibly the 2017 Christmas Special).

It could of course be some (relatively) unknown actor like Matt Smith was but it could also be someone Chibnall has worked with before and specifically wants for the role (see RTD and Eccleston/Tennant).

The first name that springs to mind is Olivia Coleman but is there anyone else?

Rhys Ifans.

I've got a feeling Jodie Whittaker will be the next Doctor

I have no clue who it might be but i would bet money on them being younger...a lot younger. I think 25-40 maximum and I would expect them to skew it closer to 25. I would also expect a complete unknown or at least someone who is not an established name.

I have a noose prepared in case it's somebody like Aidan bleedin' Turner.

If we're going down the female route then Suranne Jones would make me very happy.

Please don't say that, I'm trying to look at the positives of tonight's news.

I'm still hoping that Capaldi will stay for at least one more series when Chibnall takes over myself, just to ease the transition between era's. It doesn't need to be a completely fresh slate every time the big chief changes, that's not how it was done in the good old days. (9 times out of 10).

And it would be nice to see a new show runners take on Capaldi's Doctor.

Peter Capaldi.

Excellent choice. About time we had a Welshman! (bit biased....)

PC is great and would love him to stay, but think like others that new Showrunner could well mean new Doctor. Which as ever is sad yet exciting. Still, Tom outlasted two producers. 'Outlasted' them under the table, probably...

Another vote for Peter Capaldi.

Even if Peter Capaldi leaves, can Peter Capaldi succeed him?

I wouldnt be surprised if AG would be on the list. His movie career hasnt taken off like I think he probably envisaged when he left for The Hobbit. It depends how much importance the BBC place on the housewife demographic that allegedly have jumped ship. Tops off eye candy might be the order of the day if some people are to be believed.

David Tennant technically did it.

I couldn't stand him in The Hobbit, but then I'm a Tolkien book snob and couldn't stand a lot of things in those films. I just didn't like how they turned a character who was supposed to be a dwarf of Middle-earth into an angsty love-struck lad for the ladies.

Surely he's too busy on Poldark (and there's enough books for hundreds more series of that yet). I doubt the BBC would want the same leading himbo on two of their flagship dramas.

I honestly don't think Capaldi will want to stay for a 4th season.

Two thoughts on this:

S10 will take Capaldi to three series and four years in the role; the most any modern era Doctor has done thus far.

I imagine that Moffat will want to end the story of Twelve himself; after all Twelve is his creation, much the same as it was clear that Eleven was his creation and he had plans for ending Matt's tenure on the show right from his first episode with everything from his era coming back for his swansong. I also think that it's highly likely that Chibnall will want to create his own take on the show right from the off.

Personally I don't mind Capaldi leaving and a new Doctor entering for Chibnall's first series. Remember it won't be happening until 2018 by which point Capaldi will have been in the role for over four years.

Three series (and some specials) spread over four years certainly does seem to be the pattern for Doctor's these days, but that's another reason why I'd prefer Capaldi to stay on a little longer. I don't like patterns in something that should rather more fluid than that.
