Looking at people Chibnall has previously cast I could see James D'Arcy as the Doctor (which could well lead to Hayley Atwell as the companion or at least a guest star ), Younger than Capaldi but not too young.

Hopefully The Chib won't decide to give Jaime Campbell Bower another chance as the lead in one of his shows.

Oh god....now you've mentioned that, it's almost screamingly obvious that Chibnall will want to cast him.....

I've got a good track record on this. I suggested Peter Capaldi ten years ago. So, I'm usually right...eventually. I'd prefer an actor with a bit of 'character', rather than some foppish-haired youngster, but I suspect they will skew younger this time.

I think it's very highly likely I'm afraid that the BBC will want a young pretty boy Doctor next time, and sooner rather than later.
I just hope that Peter Capaldi, a fantastic actor but possibly in the wrong place at the wrong time, does get a chance to show what be can do under a new production regime before he has to hand over the reins.

The thing is, if they go for a 'young pretty boy' the next time, that alone I don't mind. In fact it's actually quite nice to have something of a contrast with the previous lead - and for me the similarities to Ten and Eleven meant Matt Smith was always heavily compared to David Tennant, and seen as more of a 'stand-in' than a 'successor' by a specific but somewhat integral group of viewers.

But if that 'young pretty boy' is also capable of some really decent acting from a competent script I have no problem with it at all. It's only when they're cast as eye-candy that the show heads back towards style-over-substance. A substantial show is always a better one (it can be stylish too if it so wishes) and I think why I have enjoyed Eccleston and Capaldi far more.

I think fans should start getting very vocal with their support and preference for Capaldi. Let's encourage both Capaldi and the BBC to break the three season trend for Doctors.

Instead of talking about the next one let's root for Capaldi. LOUDLY.

I wouldn't want the next Doctor as young as Matt Smith was, but it seems we are in the age where The Doctor will have to look good. But as long as that person can act and isn't only good for eye candy i'll be fine with it.

It's odd, as apart from Digital Spy's own Facebook posts, and The Mirror, I've seen absolutely nothing but praise for Capaldi everywhere else tonight and he seems so incredibly popular. Those examples I mentioned both had commenters who criticised Capaldi for his age, but even then they were shot down by people with very popular posts that defended him again.

I really hope he outstays Moffat... for selfish reasons in that I enjoy his portrayal hugely, but also because I think it would do the show good, and of course I'd hope he wants to as well! I wasn't fond of how clean the slate was made for Series 5. Doctor Who changes, but it was perilously close to feeling like a soft reboot for a short while.

Me too, but sadly there are a lot of people out there who don't like Capaldi because he isn't young. And him staying for a longer time will probably do the show good, and change the precedent of the show again.

My bet is Aiden Turner too loved him on Being Human hes usually the sort to play fantasy/sci fi characters anyway.

I knew that the Capaldi is leaving rumours would be fuelled again as soon as this was announced. Moffats departure and Capaldi's departure (whenever he choses to leave) are mutually exclusie and not linked to each other, so while it is possible Capaldi could leave I'm sure we will get at least one more series after 10 with Capaldi as he has previously stated he plans on staying in the role for a long time.

Peter Capaldi, but if he decides to leave, I'm not bothered as long as it's not a woman. There, I've said it, now hides behind the sofa.

Some of the younger actors from War and Peace, all fresh faces, at least for me.

No I can't have her as the Doctor she's too good looking and I don't want to start thinking the doctor looks pretty tasty at my age.

After being one of the people who keeps insisting that those who don't like Capaldi must just be ageist against an older actor in the role, you then show yourself to be ageist against a younger actor in the role.

For me all that matters is that they are a good actor. If they can do the role justice then age is inconsequential.

No, it's the sex appeal aspect that bothers me more, though I do think older men generally play the role better because they can capture that wisdom and feeling of paternity I often associate the character. I have enjoyed Peter Davison, Paul McGann and Matt Smith in the role however despite some of their flaws.

Matt Smith was particularly good at times I thought at putting over that his character was an immensely old mind in a young looking body.
When (not if I'm afraid) a much younger actor takes over the role again, I hope they can pull off the same impression, because that is very important with the character of the Doctor.

Would love to see Paul mcgann get another go. Probably be a female this time though.
