It's very difficult to be specific about popularity.

Rachel, Matt Baker, Harry, Louis, Simon - all won the Tour in a landslide.

Austin Healey won the Tour despite not even making the Final of Strictly.

Matt Baker had to compete with Kara, Ricky Whittle and Colin Jackson - 3 of the best ever, and despite that, won in a landslide.

Jay and Anita have gained a lot of popularity via being on Strictly, but that is usually the reason for doing it. Harry was very popular even before he went onto Strictly.

There doesn't seem to be that much to be drawn from the many results.

And if you don't mind me asking who would you say was the best dancer to ever grace strictly I'm curious and this is a genuine question please do not take it out of context as I know there are a lot of sensitive posters here ”

You're telling me!

Is there a leaderboard of how many wins the couples have achieved on this tour?

If you go to www.tellymix.co.uk and click on the Strictly 2016 link, the second item down is tracking the tour winners.

They haven't updated the Manchester and Liverpool dates yet, though. From what I recall, Jay won all three at Manchester, and in Liverpool it was one each to Jay and Anita.

Right now Jays fans are the ones dominating these boards but in series 5 (for instance) there was huge fan support for Alesha, Matt DA, and Gethin. Those threads all had many posters who could easily have rivaled the Jay support of today. Things could get pretty heated and there was fan wars aplenty, To this very day though I still talk to many of the posters from the rival threads on Twitter/Facebook and throughout the years have become pretty good friends with many of them. Anyway that's all a whole other story that I seem to have drifted into and have gone way off track with what I was originally supposed to be writing about.

On the subject of polls though, again I don't think they are a true reflection on general popularity. Other than the weekly polls in this forum, I don't think I really took part in any others. I think superfans of someone (ie, like proper fans of Jay, Georgia etc) are much more likely to vote in all of the various online polls, than someone like myself who although did support someone during the series, I wasn't an avid enough fan to seek out polls to vote in.

On another thought, I do wonder how much of a rival for Jay, Anita/Gleb would have been had they made the final. They are clearly very popular on tour and I think most weeks during SCD they might have been pulling in a huge amount of votes. Maybe it was just bad luck for them to get eliminated when they did and if they had made it through that week instead of Katie & Anton would it have made any difference to the end result? I suppose a lot would have depended on whatever routines they had in the final. I suspect they would have chosen their Paso for their favourite but wonder what the judges would have chosen for them. Maybe not something as crowd pleasing as their American Smooth that's going down a storm on tour... Who knows?

Does any of this even make sense to anyone other than me? I'm just finished nightshift and clearly need my bed.”

Anita was in the bottom 2 on the show tho so didn't have the support Jay did obviously.....so makes me think she would not have beat him in the final.....youtube views for his dances also speak volumes.

In my opinion, Jay is among some of the best, Kara, Rachel Stevens, Natalie Gumede, Harry (but ballroom only), Ricky Whittle, Denise, Pixie were all fabulous dancers (I guess Colin Jackson, Jill and Denise Leeis too, I didn't watch back then). How we arrange them in order it's kind of down to personal taste and personal technical preferences.”

I think this year the competition was so strong....all the finalists were amazing dancers and seemed to have a fair share of supporters....I just think Jay was way ahead in terms off support...not only was he never in the dance off,he won and is clearly dominating the tour also....It was just my observation that he was the most popular male to date.

Looks like Jay and Aliona/Anita and Gleb are the most popular then.

I do think Gleb has a lot to do with Anita popularity

I think Jay was as popular (or more) as Harry Judd. McFly may have been/is more popular than The Wanted (I have no idea, not my coup of tea either of them), but a drummer is not the most popular of a band.

Anita I believe is the one whose popularity/public persona awareness has been benefited the most out of being in strictly. Although I think all have, (bar Peter Andre ) Anita has gone from a reporter in The One Show and Countrylife to fairly well known TV presenter.

BIB I actually disagree. In my opinion there were 4 strong dancers this year (Jay, Georgia, Helen and Kellie) with three average ones that appear to be better than they actually were (Anita, Peter and Katie at the beginning), which in my opinion is in line with most years.

Agreed. We know that in the semifinal, both Jay and Georgia had to pull out more votes than Anita in order for her to be in the bottom two, as the former two were tied in second place just above Anita, so the highest she could have been with the public is third out of five.

But in the quarterfinal, Georgia did much worse than Anita who was bottom of the leaderboard and still managed to avoid the dance off (Jay could have still been top of the popular vote for that quarterfinal result but as he was top of the leaderboard we cant say).

Not for me. I liked her gutsiness.

So do people only like Jay because they fancy him?

Not me! I admire Jay because of his elegance on the dancefloor, his personality off (and on) the dancefloor, his sense of humour, his compassion. I didn't know anything about him before Strictly but have found out more since.

Same here. Jay, Helen and Anita were streets ahead for me in terms of dancing ability, likeability and personality. It doesn't surprise me at all that Jay is the most popular and that Anita is the most popular woman.

I think young men like Jay seem to appeal to the maternal instinct of ladies of certain age. I've see it time and time again on shows like this.

I don't think this forum gives a proportionate idea of the popularity of the dancers to be honest. The fact that Jay and Anita are the only ones to have won the tour shows indicates to me that they are the most popular dancers with the general public. I know to read some of the threads here you would think that the GBP adore Georgia for example but the reality is that it's just a fairly small group of fans.

Exactly!

I'm a massive fan of Helen's for example but don't have a problem accepting that she's simply not as popular as Jay and Anita.

Well I *think* you are angry that your favourite isn't as popular as Jay and Anita and you didn't like that fact to be pointed out.

I totally agree with you. I really admire Strictly fans like you. I have been a fan of Anita from the beginning of the show and it really makes me angry when people say, the only reason she is winning is because Gleb's popularity.

You did hit the nail on the head, about some fans.

I totally understand someone being really keen on their favourite but when it gets to the stage where any comment which isn't passionately in support of them cannot be accepted then it's possibly time to, erm, question priorities in life! * Whispers * - these people aren't your actual friends, you don't actually know them.

Yes, completely agree re Anita - in fact I'd go so far as to say that she's popular despite Gleb rather than because of!
