Yes
imo...1. He needs to break this ridiculous short eras of 3 yrs of actors who only use this show as a stepping stone
2, He should be given a choice to quit or not just like CE. DT and MS
3/ He's the best actor this show has ever had.

Yeah, because most actors who played Doctor Who did it for more than three series...

Capaldi's great, and if it were based just on his talents alone and their were no other factors, I'd absolutely say he should stay as long as possible

BUT

No-one but the fan's know anything about this or that showrunner. If the show is bad to them, they associate it with the current doctor. If there is a new doctor at the start of Chibnalls shiny new era, then new viewers, or previous viewers who hated Moffat's Capaldi series's and stopped watching will take a look once more to see if they think this new doctor's era is for them. If it's still Capaldi in the role, then most viewers won't know anything has changed and will continue to not give it a new chance.

What I'm trying to say is, the show is and always has been bigger than one actor, and despite Capaldi being a great actor, I think that he should go with Moffat to allow Chibnall, and the show to have a chance at mainstream popularity once again like it had with RTD. That is why I have voted that he should leave with Moffat.

I think if you could actually somehow prove that a new era would be better served with a new face, then as a fan, Capaldi would probably voluntarily go when moffat does.

I voted stay.

The change at the top is massive enough without changing the lead Doctor as well. The "all change" scenario of new EVERYTHING in S5 certainly wasn't what Moff would have wanted, as it made that series an incredible risk for him and the BBC.

"His 3 series"? So PC only gets to do 3 series because DT and MS choose to quit after 3?

Both actors were offered a 4th series

Exellent points

Moffat wanted DT to stay on for a 4th series with him for the change over.

Of course it was a risk when the show had been immensely popular. Now though with the show losing viewers and gradually slipping out the mainstream consciousness, so many people associate this era with Capaldi's face, that through no fault of his own, alot of people won't even give the show another chance while he is still the doctor.

If Capaldi does leave, he'd better get straight onto providing his voice for some Big Finish audios. The thought of him in a story with Tom Baker or Colin Baker is enough to make my inner nerd squeal.

Talk about a back handed insult.

PC is an exellent actor/doctor and a amazing representative of this show, If anything his era has show how fickle people are about age and looks and how imortant to people it is. Sadly, The realtively younger and cute doctor(man or woman) will rule after the rest Of PC's era

Series 9, got the best reviews for DW in years, with some of the best acting ever on this show. shame some can get over the fact he's not Tennant or Smith, Cute or "Sexy". Oh well.

I voted undecided. I love Capaldi, but his first series as the doctor was unconvincing. The last series was a lot better and every time they moved him away from clara we actually got to see the doctor - and Capaldi - shine. The episode that he did all on his own was superb and I loved the interaction with river in the Christmas special. I'm looking forward to seeing where the doctor will go in the next series, but as to whether or not he should stay on with Chris chivalry is not something that can be answered IMO just yet. Depends on where the story goes.....

On here, I would have expected a ringing endorsement for Capaldi. Particularly after everyone went into a soggy fanboy meltdown following Heaven Sent. So to have only just over half say he should stay is a surprise.

You have to take emotion out of it. What I am saying is that I think Capaldi is great in the role, and enjoyed series 9 (expect the let down last episode), but it's not about whether or not you like you like Capaldi.

For me it comes down to - do you wan't the show's new era to have it's best chance of being immensely succesful once more, or do you want to cling on to an actor who was the face of a period where ratings went down, and with whom those people who stopped watching will never give another chance until it is someone new.

Also, please stop perpetrating the myth that Tennant was so popular because he was young. Tennant was popular because he was and is an amazing actor, at a time when the series was also being written strongly.

Capaldi's acting is great too, but his era is just not accessible or likeable for a lot of people as the ratings prove.

also I think your post proves YOU are as fickle about looks and age as the people you moan about because moaning and judging about the idea of a younger dctor taking over after Capaldi is just as bad as someone moaning about an older actor.

As someone who has frequently accused others of being rude and dismissive you might want to reacquaint yourself with the rules of the forum. Throwing around terms like 'fanboy' in an obviously derogatory fashion is actually against forum rules. Sadly the mods seem to care very little about that at the moment but never the less its the case. And there has been rather too many cases of forum members using terms like 'rabid fanboys' etc in the last day or so. Hardly conducive to civil discussion.

And you're kind of dis-proving your own point. There are no 'fanboys' on here. Just people that enjoy the show on its own merits. I thought Heaven Sent was a masterpiece but still voted that Capaldi should leave because I was considering the bigger picture and what is the best thing for the show. As have many here. Exactly the opposite of what one would expect a 'fanboy' to do.

I think Tennant was an amazing actor but you cannot seriously expect anyone to pretend that a large part of his appeal to certain demographics wasnt his 'geeky heart throb' status among young girls, gay men and many a desperate housewife. Come on. Theres nothing wrong with that but to deny its existence is silly. Not saying he wasnt a brilliant actor, He was. He is. But he also had the added 'bonus' that many found him cute and fanciable and this contributed to his mass appeal.

Oh saladfingers81. You are the very last person on this forum who should be throwing shade at another member's posts. But thank you for brightening up my Saturday evening. The absurdity of your comment has me laughing out loud.

I'm not denying some probably fancied him, but I struggle with the idea that anyone who wasn't particularly interested about anything to do with the storylines would sit through 4 years of him as the doctor just because they thought he was hot. I could believe that some would find his looks an 'added bonus' as you say, but not that they would watch for his looks alone.

Never met anyone personally male/female/gay/straight who has said ' I loved Tennant as the doctor because he was hot'

Currently watching him in Jessica Jones, where again he is absolutely the most compelling thing on screen just entirely down to his incredible acting.

The irony is strong in this one, At least you seem to have mis-placed your victim card for once. Which makes a change.

Taking the emotion out of it...

Do you think Alll these young girls like DT and Smith, because they are great actors or had accessible doctors?
Nope. part of it is more superficial than that. lol

DT/MS looks were a HUGE reason for their appeal, The looks that PC does seem to have to them.

He's good, he's basically playing a evil version of the 10th doc.

Seem's like you are just trying to judge why other people liked them and pretend your opinion as fact. Tennant was and is a great actor and Smith was good in the role too.

I can see your trying to praise Capaldi but I don't see why you have to resort to putting down other doctor actors to do so or diminish and insult good acting by saying it was all about their looks which is just untrue.

I can compliment someone without putting someone else down. You should try it.
