I'd imagine the reaction was because it was a communal house where it was known others would be handling the washing, if that is indeed the arrangement. I'd certainly be washing my own underwear if they were such a mess in such a situation, and as soon as possible. Both due to avoiding my own embarrassment, and out of respect for others. That's what these things come down to, consideration and respect for others.

I always thought they washed their own, and maybe they picked them up because they'd been piled somewhere for quite a while untouched.
